  • This is my preferred practice method for any art form. It allows you to grow in multiple facets, all inside one streamlined practice session.
I hope you all enjoy it

Mike changed my life as a drummer. I love drummers and especially drummers who teach and inspire others to play.

Mike, I've got to get back to these vids again. You not only have some of the best technique, but everything I've learned from ya, has not only stuck with me, but improves an aspect of my playing.

    Hope this helps someone :)
    My notes from this lesson:
    4 stage practice method-
    Stage 1-NON CREATIVE (10 mins)
    Mike Johnson
    Warm up your body
    Things I can do
Something you can do, but do it better than you have ever done it before
    Examples:
    Rudiments
    Singles
(Two on snare four on snare)
    Fills
    Grooves
    Bass drum/hand tech
    (RLKK) comfortable
    RLRR-RLRR, etc
Put bass drum with right hand
    Working on clarity
    Precision
    Playing Zones
    Don’t speed up*
    Stop, deep breath, new tempo.*
What do you physically want to be better at on the drum set?
“It’s something you can already do, but you’d like to do better.”

Great thoughts, looking forward to the next vids in the series. Wondering why 10 minutes is the magic number ("stage 1 is always 10 minutes") as opposed to a percentage of the total practice time etc. Is 10 minutes the sweet spot for developing muscle memory on a single exercise or something?

I like to practice things that allow me to more easily produce on the fly what I hear in my mind creatively during a song. You can never go wrong by practicing the rudiments though because they translate to everything else.

Hey Mike, a couple of questions for you. I had to cancel my in person lessons due to work schedule. I am looking for good lessons online. I will admit that I feel there a lot of good channel for this so it is hard to choose. Does your online school have any schedule demands? Also, if I sign up for the year package does that allow me to access all the content on the site. For instance, Drumeo has other other content that you have to pay for separately. Let me know. Thank you.
