There's some truth hidden in there. If MLIG's video was made to make more people aware of the MiSTer project and show them how easy and approachable setting up a MiSTer is, then it failed really hard because the only people that would watch a video almost 3 hours long are the ones who have already done their research and know what to do (like myself). If I was a newbie scared of the complexity of the MiSTer despite really wanting one, opening a youtube video and seeing 2 hours+ would definitely scare me away forever. This is the way to go, 10 minute video showing people how to get straight to the business, well done Bob!

Which type of connection are you using to go into your CRT? I get nauseating image artifacts out of the genesis core when I use Antonio's composite adapter.
@@dpcaire As I'm in the UK i'm using the project packapunch RGB scart cable for analogue NT mini and MiSTer. Gotta love scart. I did use the same converter as yourself for S-Video and had no problems with it visually that I can remember.

Awesome intro video! An addition worth mentioning: update_all has a PC version (though Windows only) that can be preferable over running the script on the MiSTer for those who can get a more reliable internet connection on their PCs, or those who encounter timeout errors with the script. Then you only need to copy the folders from your PC to the MiSTer's SD card.
I ordered a mister that has been sitting in a box for months but now I am finally going to set it up after seeing the progress of the N64 core and how easy it is to set up with this video.
Just got my DE10 setup thanks to this great video. It must have saved me a good couple of hours of trying to figure it out. Now I need to try and figure out how to SFTP stuff over to the Mister as it's a pain taking the SD card out and putting it in my laptop (or maybe I just need to get an SD card reader for my desktop). Really looking forward to start playing, should receive the 128MB memory and a couple of controllers in the next couple of days :-) Oh and anyone in the UK who is looking at getting a DE10, I got mine from Terasic directly, took about 3 days when it was in stock (had to wait about 3 weeks for stock), the power supply is a US one but a £4 travel adaptor from Sainsburys works great to plug the power supply in (it runs at 110 to 240V).
Thanks for this Bob. I didn't think I ever need it but my mister starts having trouble after some experiments of mine so I had to reinstall it. This video was perfect ! As I use retronas for my roms it has been a breeze to get back and running fast.

My university has a LOAD of the DE10s, not nano though and I was wondering if these would work or if there are other hardware differences between the DE10 and the DE10 Nano other than size and some switches etc. Cheers

Nice primer, Bob. I do wonder how many people waste money on an analogue I/O board they don't even use. And kudos for implying that the SD card isn't the best way to store ROM files in the long run. I would recommend a heatsink and fan even in a minimal setup, though; that FPGA gets pretty hot!
Is there an update script that pulls all the roms too? Finding them all especially for the obscure systems sounds like its going to be a nightmare. I'm dumb.

I would not recommend to use Rufus for flashing the image to Sd Card. Mister Fusion installed with the MiSTer, but i could not read the Sd Card after being plugged again to the PC. The MiSTer project only recommends 3 flashing programs : BalenaEtcher, Windisk32 Imager or Pi Imager. Cheers
Hardware emulation like Mister is far more accurate with less lag. And it’s much easier to set up controllers. But software emulation like what’s used on the raspberry pi will support many more consoles.

All depends on what you're trying to accomplish. FPGA hardware emulation has the potential for zero latency, in a small package. If you want a casual gaming station, your PC is fine. If you'd like something good enough to run tournaments on, you'll (at least now and in the short-term future) need an FPGA-based solution. Your comment (and I mean this respectfully) is exactly like saying: "Why would anyone buy an Acura? The cost seems a little ridiculous. Why not just buy a Honda? It's the same thing..."
That's totally up to you. My personal opinion, is the MiSTer looks awesome via it's HDMI output and if you have a good TV, it'll be an excellent experience.
I just bought a new 55 inch G3 and wonder if the MiSTer would be a good device for it? Sadly I do not have BFI 120hz because LG removed that feature.@@RetroRGB
For everything except the PlayStation (because it’s not 100% finished yet), the “update_all” script will do that for you when you run it for the first time.

If you try this on a new SD card it does not work. After you write the mister fusion ISO (used rufus), you put the SD card back in the mister let it finish with misterfusion. After this, putting the SD card back into the PC does not show ANY files so i cannot copy the update all into it. Why am i missing a filesystem on the SD card after "imaging" the misterfusion ISO onto the SD?
Liking the fpga project. Almost don't want to use pc emulators anymore. Even my consoles are put away for use on the day i want nelstalsha. Liking all the cores. neogeo is my fav. Wow psx beta is shaping up. No need to get a ode- hdmi mod ps1 now. Get 128mb don't cheep out it's not that much more expensive. Im thinking in getting digital o with duel ram. COme on someone make some new reto controllers. High quality. for the console and for the llapa. Blister works good for me. Snak adapter needs another port for second player. Wish i didn't loss that port for mt32 which is for pc cores that most of them don't support llapa anyways.

Each time I check the price of DE-10 Nano I go into "How much?! No, too expensive", and each time the price is up by $20 between the last time I checked.
That "update all" script looks a bit dodgy... it downloads the roms from somewhere. Does it not put the mister project in legal danger bundling roms like that?
The update all script is to download the bios and core configuration for each system. The user still responsible for supplying the Roms for those systems.
You're right, that's why I don't bundle it with Mr. Fusion and it's not part of the official MiSTer release. Many of the BIOS files for different systems that update_all downloads are also proprietary and protected by copyright.

If you can borrow one, you could just try if it works. They have a pretty similar FPGA on them, but the DE10 lacks HDMI. It only supports VGA output.

I've flashed using Rufus at least 50 times across multiple MicroSD cards and PC's with no issue.

Yes, I would. And also make sure the MicroSD is plugged in all the way, as a “black screen” happens with no SD connected.

Can you configure different controllers for different cores? Say a genesis controller for genesis core , nes for nes etc.?
Yup! And it's MUCH easier to configure than most software emulation solutions.

I decided to copy the "grumpy old man" and use win32 disk imager - and that solved my issue... thanks!

Terasic has a small stock if you contact them directly.
