- A two-voice track on the Buchla Easel, with stereo delay and a little reverb added externally. The idea was to generate an irregular rhythm via the “arpeggiation rate” input, while maintaining the time signature via a MIDI clock. Further patch notes in the video.
Thanks to Jean-Francois for loaning the Easel, and to my son Max for designing and making the Easel stand.
Video footage from the prairie park near my house in Iowa City.
Gear used:
Buchla Easel (2013 reissue)
Electro-Harmonix Cathedral pedal
Electro-Harmonix 95000 looper

this sounds amazing! thanks for the patch notes
Thanks for watching!
the tape on the envelope values is low-key genius
Thanks, I should trademark this and market it as "modular tape"
This is really beautiful! Would love to play on an Easel one day. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks Tom, much appreciated.
Genius! Anxiously waiting for my modern Easel to be built and shipped. This is such an inspiration! Thank you!!
Thanks, that's so great to hear! And congrats on your impending Easel - I'm sure you'll love it!
Beautiful music thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent 👌
Thanks Probbie!
woow so cool done very nice !!
and the Dog is looking so interestet so cool 😃😃😂😂
Thanks Jon! Yes, the pup is definitely a synth-head!
Very nice....incredible what a bt delay and reverb can do to lift and glue the sounds into music...
Indeed! The Easel sounds pretty good when it's dry, too!
Hi Ricky!
Very etherial sound - totally dig it.
Hey Tom, thanks for watching. For my next video I might train Ricky to play the Easel with his paws - will surely go viral!
Love the tape on the sliders !
Hey Roland, thanks for watching. I've been enjoying your own Buchla videos!
:58 seconds in and I’m like oowww this is a good patch oowww yeah.
Thanks Steven! I experience some "oowww yeah" moments myself when I switch on the Easel and open up that crossfader - such a great instrument!
I checked this video suggested in my feed, being curious to hear what the Easel sounded like. I am still not familiar with the machine's specific sound path and terminology, but I really liked the mood you created here. And the visual side of the video is equally great. Nice work !
How much polyphony does the Easel have ? In your piece here, I can hear up to three notes played together, at least.
Two oscillators and two LPGs through which they can be shaped. You may be hearing the delay as an extra voice?
Thanks! The Easel has a maximum of two voices: there are two oscillators and two low-pass gates, one envelope but a pulser that can act as a second envelope. The perception of three voices here is the result, I think, of steps 2, 3, and 4 (on the 5-step sequencer) being higher in pitch and slurred (ie. trigger turned off, so envelope doesn't fire). So a kind of "implied polyphony".
@@electrummodularmusic Nice ! Thank you for the detailed answer.
@@cloudfan420 possibly, yes. Thanks for the insight.
Wow you're really know what you're doing on this machine! 🔥🔥🔥
I'm trying to record my performances like this, instead of using my phone microphone.
How do you record your performances?
I think I recorded this one on the Jam Man pedal that was sitting on the speaker. Not ideal really... Sometimes, I use the EHX looper to record, or the DIsting EX for 6-track recording. I should probably invest in a Zoom H4!
Okay, I want one.
Go ahead - you won't regret it!
I've been messing with the arturia software version, this thing is so wonderful but also incomprehensible
Don't give up - it gets easier! I'd recommend Todd Barton's youtube channel for some excellent instruction.
Dog approves
Apparently...although I did bribe him with some treats
