This channel is a logbook of my basement experiments in modular synthesis.
Minimalism for Modular #5: Hans Otte's Book of Sounds
An introduction to the ethereal music of Hans Otte, via a modular interpretation of two parts (2 and 7) from his Book of Sounds (1979-82).
Also contains several ideas for generative/aleatory sequencing in a modular system: in particular, decoupling pitch and gate, combining a multi-channel sample player (Disting EX) with a sequencer that has per-step gate outputs (0-Ctrl), and using a series of probabilistic gates (Missed Opportunities) to distribute/alternate pitch variations.

minimalism for modular #4: sample + hold + phase

Tiny changes over time are essential to minimalist (and ambient) pieces. This video demonstrates how to create gradually evolving sequences with a sequencer and a “sample and hold” that are NOT perfectly synchronized. Any sequencer and “sample and hold” will work! In this new series of videos, I’ll be applying the ideas and techniques of minimalist composers to modular synthesis. First up: the linear additive process. NOTE: this is an example of an isomelody. Switches (Eurorack sequencing without sequencers)
Переглядів 1,4 тис.6 місяців тому
A sequential switch is an essential utility for modular music-making. But Disting EX's multi-switch offers up to SIX switches that can be configured in multiple ways: bidrectional, sequential, random, ping-pong, etc. And each switch is essentially a double switch: it can alternate its inputs AND outputs. Best of all, these sequences can work separately but they can also work together, sharing t...

Inverted echoes (a modular patch idea)
Переглядів 8276 місяців тому
The aim here - besides trying out the TSNM as an expressive keyboard - was to generate an inverted echo, so that a descending melody comes back as an ascending one, or vice versa. (I stole this idea from Bach, who often used contrapuntal inversion, playing the theme “upside-down”). Mutable Instruments’ Beads (in delay mode) is perfect for this, but any module with a long delay would work. The o...

Sonic sculptures (generative modular music)
Переглядів 1,2 тис.10 місяців тому
(For Paula) This patch was inspired by hours (weeks?) of listening to Morton Feldman’s exquisite music. It ended up quite different harmonically from Feldman’s pieces, partly due to the limitations of a modular system. The envelope generators and attenuators required some tweaking to get that balance between repetition and divergence, revolving and evolving. In retrospect, I could have left lon...
Interlocking hands: Minimalist generative piano (Qu-bit Bloom, Disting EX)
Переглядів 1,7 тис.11 місяців тому
Recently I’ve been playing minimalist pieces on the piano (Phillip Glass, Howard Skempton) that involve both polyrhythms and overlapping hands. For this video, I transferred the idea to my modular system, splitting an F minor sixth chord across two sequencer channels, and clocking the channels at different rates (x2, x3). The sequencer (Qu-bit Bloom) generates 64 variations on this pattern, a s...

What’s the module creating the strings voices in your second patch ❤
It's Beads, which is processing and pitching up the saw waves to create something like strings!
That’s insane! I keep returning to this. It’s fascinating. My eurorack vids are disposable but this has integrity. It’s doing something. Something new. I’m studying this. Hard. Thanks for the upload❤
This is first time I’ve found a eurorack clip where the sound produced is musical and something I’d buy.
Thanks, that's really great to hear!!
If I was stuck on a desert island and could only have three albums, I don't know what the first one would be, but the second one would certainly be something by Arvo Pärt. Probably "Beatus"
Good choice!! 🏝️
try Luke Abbott.
Big fan. "Translate" is my favorite album.
So good! Instant follow!
Thanks!
Sounds very magical. Thanks for this.
Thanks for listening!
Oh my, I can’t believe there is another synth head, who is into minimalism, and has played Ann Southam on the piano.! You know about John Adam’s early minimalism like China Gatea and Phrygian Gates? Im wondering if I could somehow get that music into my Nerdseq. By the way, I tried doing Reich’s Piano Phase using Pamela’s workout for the timing and Nerdseq to play the notes but I ran into a bug on the Nerdseq so couldn’t finish it. I’m going to have to bug the creator of the Nerdseq to release the bug fix he created to address the problem so I can try again.
Thanks Michael, great to hear from a fellow modular minimalist! Nerdseq looks like a really interesting sequencer for this kind of music. Good luck getting the bug fix!
Sounds awesome!
Thanks!!
Could it be an alternative for Rings?
Are you referring to the Disting EX? Yes, it has a Rings algorithm on it.
Thanks for the piano samples! But... how do you play them with velocity, and which Disting 4 algorythm do you play them in? I'd be very grateful for any help!
You can use them in SD Multisample or SD 6 Triggers. Both will respond to variations of velocity from a MIDI keyboard or from a sequencer with dynamic (ie variable) gate outputs, eg Make Noise 0-Ctrl. If your sequencer can't do that (most can't), you can modulate the gate strength via a VCA. Or you could modulate the attenuator on the Disting input, as I did in "Minimalism for Modular #5". Good luck with the piano samples!
Excellent video. I'm a big fan of Arvo Pärt.
Me too! Thanks for watching.
Fun

This is also very lovely. Can I ask what the Ehx cathedral is doing?
Thanks Luke, Cathedral is a reverb unit. I forget what the settings were, but I mainly use the Hall reverb. It has a great echoverb-style delay too.

quite impressive bravo

I really love this! It hits the spot for me because I have been thinking about the idea of writing and interpreting scores for modular. I am currently reading a book on David Tudor that starts by talking about his relationship to composers (including Cage) as a pianist and the kinds of scores that he would choose to perform (often not notes on a stave). It the goes into the kinds of scores that he created when he was working with electronics. Which leads me back to your interpretation of a score for modular here.
Hi Bernie, thanks for your nice comment. Sounds like the book, Reminded by the Instruments - I need to read that!
A very rare modular channel popped up that sounds good. Instand Follow!
Hi Patrick, thanks so much for listening and subscribing!
This is very very impressive - such an interesting way to approach a score through patch programming. The attention to detail in this one is wild. Bravo.
Thanks Simon, that's very kind! As you know, the Disting EX is perfect for this kind of thing. It's the one module in my rack that I wouldn't swap - except of course for a Disting NT!
Inspiring patches!
Cheers!! 🙏
Fantastic. And thank you for the samples 🙏🏽
Thanks Rick, and no worries! 🎹
I think the idea of interpolating repeated notes (as almost a kind of drone) was a good idea, and works really well here. It reminded me of the interpolated repeated notes that are added in some variations in Chaozhou xianshi, a genre of traditional ensemble music from the Teochew cultural region of southern China, which can be heard here (especially in the pipa lute and yangqin hammered dulcimer parts) starting at 5 minutes and 41 seconds (this is a variation of the same melody that appears earlier in the video without the repeated notes): ua-cam.com/video/-SXp1JROq70/v-deo.htmlm41s
Thanks so much for this. I look forward to exploring this music further - I'm intrigued to learn how the variations are constructed in it. And yes, I agree that the repeated notes of the T-voice in Arvo Part's music are drone-like. Ie. drones are not necessarily continuous, sustained notes. Cheers!
It's very novel and interesting to hear Riley's early keyboard music with a little attack (which reminds me of tapping on gut strings). All of the sounds you use on your modular synthesizers are so nice and well-chosen. Here's a unique folk instrument from Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, east-central China called niujinqin (牛筋琴, literally "cow sinew[-string] zither), which I think has a similar sound: kind of like a hammered dulcimer, but much drier. ua-cam.com/video/mS1goH_vkSg/v-deo.html
Thanks so much! Funnily enough, the Disting EX ships with an excellent dulcimer multisample (from LABS), so maybe I'll use it some time soon!
@@electrummodularmusic Over the past decade or so, many hammered dulcimer players have added a mechanism to their instruments that allows for the damping of the tone using a foot pedal (as the Hungarian cimbalom already had), which allows for a wider and more interesting range of timbres. I'm not sure if the sample you mention includes this capability. The hammered dulcimer's timbre can be too bright and obnoxious for some people, even in folk circles.
This Disting algo does include an envelope, so you could modulate the release portion to "damp" the dulcimer sample, but I guess it won't affect the timbre in quite the same way. Worth a try, though - thanks for the idea!
Part → Pärt
Damn, where's autocorrect when you need it!
Exzellent!
Thanks!
Nicely done!
Cheers!
Very cool. I feel like I need to watch this several times, pencil and notepad in hand, to work out what’s going on. Or I could just listen to it? Did you try using a synth rather than a piano sample? I would be interested to hear what that sounds like.
Thanks, and I hope it's not a case of information-overload! I might see if I can export the captions and post them online, if it helps. I didn't try this on a conventional synth, as it would require six voices (oscillator +envelope+filter+VCA)x6, with the same timbre on each voice. Ie. lots of cables!! But very doable on VCV Rack...
@@electrummodularmusic I view each voice in a rack as an instrument in an ensemble. How would one arrange the music for a sextet of diverse instruments?
Wow, kinda contemplative and mournful. In a good way.
Thanks - yes, I definitely hear that in the Otte album, too.
I just discovered your channel last night and I am obsessed! These are awesome videos, really well explained and really creatively put together, keep it up!

@@electrummodularmusic I, too, did not know about Hans Otte. Thanks for the ingenious performance! I just finished ordering a few CDs of his music, and I'll also have to find sheet music. I'm looking forward to more! 👏
This is a beautiful adaptation of Hans' philosophies to a modular system. I can only imagine these sort of synthesizer systems in the hands of these 20th century avant-garde composer. Well done :)

Thank you for watching!
Very nice and very interesting to read the explanations in the video. I was lucky enough to see a life performance of the book of sounds by Hans Otte many years ago. Since then, this album is one of my go-to minimalism records, and I keep on going back to it, and get inspiration from it.
What an incredible experience that must have been. I'd love to hear more about that concert, if you can remember... And I agree that B of S holds up to repeat listens. I've only known about Otte for a couple of years, but have already listened to BofS countless times!
This is the first time I heard about Hans Otte and his Book of Sounds, and this is genuinely mind blowing to me right now. Thank you for sharing this!
Thanks! I'm happy to be passing on this gift!
This was incredible!

Just found your work because I just bought a Qu-Bit Bloom, which led me through several of your videos! Brilliant stuff!! 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks so much! And have fun with Bloom!
all cool, but why show modular with... piano samples?
Thanks, that’s a great question. I use a variety of sound sources in my studio: analog (Dixie, Banshee, etc), FM/wavetable/granular (Plaits etc), and, as you heard here, instrument samples. I’ve been faavoring samples in this “minimalism” series, because the focus is on sequencing. When my attention - and modules - are preoccupied up with complex pitch sequencing, samples can keep things simple (no envelopes, VCAs, or filters needed!). Sample players also allow us to generate highly complex timbres that would otherwise take a huge number of modules. Disting’s sample player further allows you to build up to 6 or 8 voices that all sound identical - thus giving the impression of a single, polyphonic instrument. The reason I’ve been selecting mainly piano samples is that this is the instrument used by many of the minimalist composers covered in this series (and because I can only barely play them on a real piano!). But also because the piano has certain psychoacoustic properties. It has a much wider range, both in terms of timbre and pitch, than many other instruments. And, as a result of cultural associations, it arguably evokes a wider range of emotions. Psychologists have explored the unconscious effects of piano sounds on listeners. And finally, I’m interested in the possibilities of altering piano samples via modular effects: delay, reverb, flanging, granular processing, and - in my next video - string resonators and detuning.
Very good, please do more 😊
Thanks, will do! 👍
Thank you so much for this series, looking forward to the next installment! and thank you for the grand piano disting samples!
No worries! Glad you're enjoying the series - and have fun with the samples!
Took a short break after receiving sad news and just wanted to be distracted. The Algo put this up. So very fitting, nice, beautiful and very interesting as a fellow modular wiggler (not so much misic knowledge though!) ANy way, down the rabbit hole we go. So sorry to hear you've had sad news. I hope you find a way to get back on the synth soon and find solace in music.
