An animation synchronized to the song "What Sarah Said" by Deathcab For Cutie. It was done by using Photoshop and After Effects! It took about 6 months to finish when I wasn't busy with school.
"It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend on a faulty camera in our minds..." Are you kidding me?! F-ing BRILLIANT!
Ben Gibbard is a warrior poet.
Love Love LOVE.
This song will always remind me of the loss of my son. The fact that this album was in my car stereo when I left the hospital probably has a lot to do with that. It was like hearing the song for the first time that night.
+Stephen Slone I lost my daughter in 1993. This song was something I recently discovered and it took me back to that day at the hospital. I was there all over again.

I'm so sorry
It makes me think of losing my husband
I'm 29 years old now.. I remember watching this for the first time in my best friends basement when we were 16 years old.
Thank you for the nostalgia ❤
Brotherhood. Im 29 too, 30 this year. This song got me through some Stuff middle school

This video means so much to me. My name is Sara and my grandfather suffered a massive heart attack on December 19, 2009. I live in NC and he lived with my Grandmother in my home state of PA. Doctors did everything they could and we drove up there to see him for about two days and then we took him off life support, he died on Dec. 23 in the cardiac ICU. This song perfectly epitomizes every thought that went through my head. The song is true...love is watching someone you love die.
I see a lot of comments from what would appear to be young kids saying that this song reminds them of their youth. I agree... but I'm 44. This song touches a nerve that most of us experience at a young age, during the first death you face. Be it a family member or close friend... this song just touches that area of nostalgia.. for me anyway. Beautiful and brilliantly tragic. Thank you for this upload and this song.
Reminds me of when my grandmother, who raised me, passing away just leaving us all devastated :'(

this is the realest song ever written to me, it makes me cry every single time.
This song gave me strength while I sat beside both my grandma and grandma as they passed away each. Great song and still brings a tear to my eye.
The first time I heard this song, I was driving. As I was driving and listening, I was reminded of a person whom I had watched die, and specifically the line about "our memories depend on a faulty camera in our mind" really hit me hard. I started bawling so hard, I had to pull over for a good 15 minutes. Goddamn Gibbard, he can put a feeling/thought into words that no one else can, then he makes a song out of it that just comes along and bitchslaps you when you least expect it.
Some days, this song is the perfect song for the soundtrack of my life. Other days, its a song that can calm me like no other song can. :)
This was my favorite song for a long time. I can play it on the piano, and I love that I can just hear it now. Now only if someone could do Brother on a Hotel Bed...
I can honestly say this song actually touches me and I'm not the type that gets all emotional over little things. His voice, lyrics, sounds all combined is beauty.
It tells a story...a story of sitting in hospital, waiting for the news if someone you love is going to pull through. It tells it so perfectly, there's a hidden meaning.
5 stars-- you did amazing on the animation!
I know the song is amazing but great job on the video. Love the way it all moves together and keeps up with the beat and rhythm. Once again well done and thank you for this!!! ^^v
I was just about to reply to you that I didn't hear it, but then I listened to it again, with my ear right by the speaker, and I heard it! Thank you for that comment, if it were not for you, I never would have noticed that! :)
This song makes me cry everytime I listen to it, and just cant not listen.
This song hits every emotional cord in my body, stirs up memories, good and bad.
I wish I had found this song sooner
Great job. It's obvious that you put a lot of work into this.
It took me 6 months in 2007 I believe
I can relate 110%. Same thing happened with me and my grandma, everytime I hear this song I cry, and cry, and cry. I miss her so much.
One of the saddest songs in history not because it could happen, but because it will.
This is probably one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
this song gives me the goosebumps everytime
I'm pretty sure this song is based on Ben's friend (in real life) Sarah. She was walking along with her partner one day when she suddenly burst into tears. Her companion asked her what was up, and she said she'd just realized that some day, one of them is going to have to watch the other one die, hence how Sarah said "love is watching someone die."
This is such a beautiful song, brings back memories of childhood. One of their best songs, calms me down instantly.
I could listen to this for eternity and every time it would play, it would still touch me the same amount.
This song always makes me cry when I hear it. The song describes every moment of being in a hospital knowing your about to lose someone you love. "Every beep on the lcd takes you a lil farther away from me :( ..."
I found this song to really help me cope after she passed away. I dont ever cry over shit, but I guess this song helped me get those emotions out. I think death cab has experienced the same thing, and its great they can write about it and help others as well.
"...Knowing that you were a truth I would rather lose, than to have never lain beside at all... Love is watching someone die."
Almost a year ago now, I watched my cousin die from cancer. Love truly IS watching someone die. :'[
Love love love you Matt.
love the video, the effects are just wow.
so well timed with the music as well, its genius :D
this is amazing how did you do this, this is the kind of stuff i see in my head when i listen to music!

Every time I watch listen to this song, I think of my father.
"Love is watching someone die..."
this is really what music looks like. you know like .. when i listen to music this is the type of thing that i picture in my head.. i know its wierd but its hard to explain. Its beautiful and its calming.. :)
I just told the girl I love that I want her more than anything in the world. She doesn't want me, and this song is the only thing keeping me going right now. Thanks Death Cab.
Great work.I know the programs you used and can only imagine the time and effort.
Oh my goodness. I knew this song was beautiful musically but I just read the lyrics for the first time and that is SHEER magnificence. DCFC, I wish I had your talents.
GREAT song.
Some people don't like the tear-jerkers, they think they're contrived and sappy. Not me, the songs that make you think of your loved ones are the best IMHO.
yeah i can definatly see how every instrament had its on character, really top notch job. Beautiful art for a beautiful song
This song was a revelation from me. Love is bittersweet.
I feel that if you are present when someone is dying, when they are in their final moments, then your love for them is great - you really *do* love them.
The music video for "What Sarah Said" has a girl asking a guy if he loves her, and how much. At the end, she writes "Not at all" (all the asking is done in French). The way the vid played, I felt as if she was dying of an illness, and he couldn't accept it, and therefore not loving her.
no. I'm on the same page as you dude. It takes a real man to acknowledge something beautiful; let alone recognize it.
amazing song. i dont know what to do with myself after i listen to it. it really makes you think. did i mention this song is amazing! i love it. ♥♥♥♥
@ Deathculber
"who's gonna watch you die?" = "who will be there for you until your very last moment?"
such a beautiful song
This is my favorite song in the entire world! Thanks for adding it :)
this song is so beautiful, the first time I listened to it, I cried. This video goes so well with the song. I reacted very well with the colors. This video is perfect.
listening in 2016
this is really beautiful, I'm usually fascinated by stuff moving to the music; this is fantastic, the colors and lights fit the song (which itself is
This is Death Cab's best song hands down.
I love this song! It's so pretty and so sad. It reminds me a lot of the book My Sister's Keeper. I kept listening to it on repeat while I was reading, and it ended right before the epilouge started, in the sadest part of the book! It's so sad. I love this song! You did a really good job on the video!
Adobe After Affects is an amazing program.. it's been around for years. great vid.
amazing song. Video goes sooo well with it too! Awesome
Its powerful how accurate these lyrics are.
Bens lyrics are soooo goood!!! This song makes me soo sad but I love it soo much!!!
very nice. I liked the display. The shapes definitely had feeling in them as they twinkled and move about. I do miss that other video that got taken off too. But anyhow, this is good too. :D
love is watching someone die,,,u don't know what you have till they are gone and you know how to love others better
i love this song it's so sweet and it gives you a whole new way to look at love. Excellent song so amazing.
I may have just fallen in love with this band.
"That love is watching someone die"
"So who's gonna watch you die?"
That's fucking beautiful.
this song reminds me so much of my great grandfather. he's in the hospital right now & we don't know if he's going to make it. this song is keeping me strong. i guess love is meant to let go after all.
I think love is seeing someone's beauty at their weakest moments and I think dying is when you are your weakest of all
This is Probably wonna of of my favorite songs that get to me right next to alot of Coldplays Work Like Fix You. I Actually Used to See my life flash before my eyes that song
@muffinface573 oh my god...that was so beautiful what you wrote. And...i cant believe it though, Im crying. :')
your cat is in a marvelous place
love to love to love this song. it makes life better.
In this case, he's speaking of his love for sarah. As he watches her final breaths, he's in great pain, but he stays through it because she needs him to be there... It's really quite a powerful image
My goodness, that video must have taken quite a long time to make! Great song, great video!
There's no where else I'd rather you and I had been than in my arms with me as you lay dying...R.I.P. my beloved catson & friend, Bandit, a.k.a. Boy. 5-11-17
I absolutely love this song!
I cannot listen to it enough!
This song paints vivid imagery for me, as it brings back memories of my old Catholic school from my childhood.
How does going to a Catholic school at age 5-13 make me a molester? It just brings back memories of me and my friends playing on the playground. This album came out in my time of going to this school so thats why it reminds me of it
+Weston Kuehn youre a douche
REAL music that doesn't get the credit it deserves!!!!
A well organized video for a moderately well organized song. You should be proud of yourself, whomever created this video. I am impressed by the video but I still expect more out of Benjie.
@fiveten7
I like that! It really took me awhile to decide what i wanted to do in terms of making the images to represent each instrument. The theme of the album cover was really the true key for me to make the images move with such grace.
OK, let me just say that you are, after this post, the king of posts for my week. I agree on all accounts and yeah DCFC rox. Killer.
Love is not the only thing that allows a person to put themselves through an ideal like that for another. It can also be the overwhelming sense that they are right in one way or another (situationally dependent) , with no love involved. I understand your sentiment, just wanted to point out another perspective.
this is one of the best song i've ever heard.. when he sings "whos going to watch you die" its sounds so vivid yet painful question
brings back bittersweet memories. we were all there, but it was so hard.... :(
Listening to this because it was played in class during a music write. I didn't hear the lyrics at school, I just know that I liked the beat but now I'm in feels rip ;-; - 2k16
what a breathtaking song
"& it seems like a violent wind, that our memories depend on a faulty camera in our minds. & i knew that you were a truth i would rather lose, than to have never lain beside at all...."
You did an amazing job on this.
I hope this song never gets popular. Or more than it already is.
'So who's watch you die?'
I both love and hate how the question makes me think.
what happened to the original video? it was so beautiful...
I'm coming down on ice and this is really something else..
This video means so much to me.
I just lost my grandfather today, it was just like this in the hospital ICU. So sad :(
gr8 song, and the animation is nice. gr8 work, dude
awsome :) and the synchronization totally fits in
My personal interpretation of the lyrics "Who's going to watch you die?" is actually asking the listener who really matters to them in life. Who is going to be there at the end watching you die and who are you willing to be there at the end for, watching him/her die?
This is an amazing video for an amazing song. Wow, this must have taken a lot of time to do. Awesome job!!!! :D
I love this song. Period.
This is the most depressing song i've heard in awhile. It's beautiful.
BEAUTIFUL song I'm in LOVE!
Same thing happened to me yesterday...though with "I´ll folllow you into the dark"
Amazing music and lyrics
the beginning is actually quite easy(the piano bit) to learn, and its really rewarding to hear while you play..even if it last about 10 seconds ^-^
wonderful i must say wonderfully well done and a great sad but enjoyable song
Honestly the only song that gives me chills.
My favourite song on this album...
Absolutely Beautiful.
Man Ive Been Just cryinh all night to thia song thinking about alot of shit like me life and just other stuff so i hope everyone understands and Appreciates This Song
Dude you did an amazing job!!!
dunno how to interpret it but GF of 3 years (named sarah...) broke it off a month ago and when this came on pandora i freestyled the best guitar of my life and i felt what it was like to express feelings through music
I know...life sucks eh. But I tend to listen to music that doesn't make me feel depressed but instead what inspires those to do more.
This song makes me so sad.. but I love it ❤
