    The music in this video makes me feel so emotional. It makes me feel like: Yes I know heaven is not on earth but if it was then surely Kenya would be it. Surely Kenyans would be leading the worship in heaven. And Swahili would be the language there.

    My first time in Kiambu was December 1995. I went to KIST and I remember giving a talk on firsts. First time in Africa. First time in Kenya. First time in Kiambu. First time on an aeroplane. I wonder what those guys I talked to are doing now and where they went in the world. Kiambu is a beautiful area.

    Farmland giving way to real estate isn't a recent phenomenon, it is established practice, almost muscle memory. You need to look at some of the older neighbourhoods such as Karen and Lavington to see evidence of this. It carried on with Runda and others along Limuru road and is taking place in Ruiru right now. A pain point is forests around the city getting converted to real estate. The Nairobi national park just survived by a whisker, this was in the cross hairs, however, there was retreat. There might be another attempt to excise in the future, who knows..

    • @AfrikanTraveller
      @AfrikanTraveller  4 роки тому +3

      I hope we will never loose the current forest land and Parks to real estates. The society is currently also very vigilant.

      These farms are private. The neighboring Karura forest is intact despite some encroachment during Baba Nyayo corruption era. People have the right to exploit their resources. Those who are crusading for the environment can lobby for the preservation and restoration of gazetted government forests. Let private developers grow the economy. There is something called sustainable development.

    The reason people are moving and building in the outskirts of Nairobi is as you stated the prices. For example, when it comes to rent, you can find a 4-5 bedroom massionette going for 50k ($500) p/m in the outskirts (places like Mlolongo, Athi river, Utawala, Kiambu etc) but in areas close to the city (Westlands, Upperhill, Kilimani etc) a 2 bedroom apartment can go for upto 250k ($2500) a month.

      I am from Kiambu, the reason behind housing development is because farmers never get the return of their hard work in those coffee plantations. Imagine doing all coffee work which is one of the hardest work out there and all what you get in return is zero money...cartels took over the coffee business and farmers never get anything. This started in 90s and hasn't get any better.
