“I hate all my friends, they all lack taste sometimes” Chino putting it out plainly, this era was nearly the end, it’s just tragic that after they reconciled Chi’s accident would happen not long after (RIP Chi ❤). I also kind of consider it as part of the new beginning in a sense, their sound became a lot more atmospheric & Frank transitioned to more of a keyboardist than a DJ/sampler, he adds a real sci fi vibe to this album in particular, it’s definitely all the little details that make this album a standout overall, but to me it’s always sad knowing it’s the last we’d hear of Chi

Definitely give their debut album "Adrenaline" a listen, if you haven't already!
It's easily their most raw, aggressive and angsty album...
Incredibly catchy and punchy guitar riffs all over it, and one of my personal favourites of theirs.
Either way, it's a cool album to checkout just for the sake of understanding the evolution of their sound...
You can definitely hear some hints of sounds you'd hear in later albums.

Awesome. Will you do Sleep Token? They are one of the most experimental metal band this decade. Combining many elements like R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz, Shoegaze (a sprinke of it) Ballad, Prog, Ambience, into Metal. I know these kind of stuff is nothing new, but the way they executed it is perfect really. The best introduction to this band is to react to their "Take Me Back To Eden" album. Some say that these guys are like the opposite of Loathe (they even did a collab with ST Vocalist doing an accoustic version of 'Is it really you?'). Anyway love the reaction, keep it up! ❤

Thanks for the kind words :) I apologize I am not a huge fan of sleep token's sound but I respect what they are doing and I feel that as an act they have a lot of potential but rn it's not really my thing.

Good to see you back! I couldn’t agree more with your thoughts, I don’t come back to SNW all that often but it’s always a fun listen. Definitely remember this being divisive among fans when it came out too, but it’s gained a lot of appreciation over time. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Gore, their most polarizing album, & Ohms which many see as a return to form

Had the same initial reaction as you did, but once you read into the struggles the band, specifically Chino, was going through, the disorganized order of the songs/song production makes sense. I think it really helps with the experience to get some insight on the behind the scenes drama before giving it a listen. And for other albums to react to, Id suggest Discovery by Daft Punk or Diamond Life by Sade.

Loved your reaction! Your criticisms are very understandable. I, too, feel the same way. It's not as clean or structured as Diamond Eyes or Koi No Yokan. I still find it incredibly fascinating that they were able to pump out a great album despite the behind the scenes. My top 5 on that album would be Cherry Waves, Xerces, Hole in the Earth, Beware, and Rivière. I love the rest of them besides pink cellphone. Once again, thanks for taking your time to do this reaction! As well as the other Deftones' reactions you have done! I really enjoy your work! I also appreciate the musical background you have, so you can point out certain things in the music I can't lol. Anyway, I hope you're doing great! I'll be sure to check out your music as well!

Mystery by Ralph Castelli is a beautiful Album.
The title track is jam packed with positive vibes.
    I highly recommend it.
Also, it is ridiculous how underrated your channel is.

Just found this channel. I enjoyed how you were able to talk OVER the music without it being annoying. Like insightful but pretty brief/quiet talking over it seems better than the way-too-often pausing that so many people do.

@@barchel I know you said you were looking for non-shoegaze/alt metal stuff reaction content wise, but I did want to suggest if you return to the genre later or just want something cool to listen to if you don't know it already, Deftones did an album of Covers called... Covers... but their version of The Cars - Drive is pretty amazing. Also everything by Hum, who I think Chino said inspired Deftones in part. You'd Prefer An Astronaut (1995) is great and more popular, but Downward is Heavenward (1998) is the only other album I can think of that makes me feel the same way Deftones does with the headphones on and volume cranked.

If you want something totally different but still amazing, I recommend Bauhaus, the kings of goth rock, In The Flat Field is one of my favorite albums ever. If you’ve heard that already or want something even more different, Becoming X by Sneaker Pimps is 90s trip hop at its finest

I find this album along with the self titled album to be quite bittersweet knowing what the band was going through at the time. SNW ranges from beautiful vocals and soft melodies to hard instrumentals. The juxtaposition gives a feeling of hope but also doubt and sorrow. Yes it’s sad but the sadness is almost comforting, so you don’t really want to leave it. Both SNW and the self titled album make me feel melancholic in all way. Saturday Night Wrist is a very different album compared to the rest, but it’s still one of my favourites nonetheless.
Anyway I just realized that I wasn’t subscribed yet(I’m going to go do that now). You’re videos and commentary are wonderful. 😊

Loved your reaction, I feel the exact same, it’s a mid tier Deftones album but that still means it’s a solid album lol. Idk if you want more current or just any recommendations, but Code Orange released aoty with The Above imo, super diverse mix of rock/industrial/hardcore/grunge. What’s dope abt Code is they have 2 vocalists, a lead male vocalist & co-lead/back female vocalist, & their keyboardist/sampler/DJ who has more of a demonic growl lol, you can hear their progression with each album as they grew from teens in the hardcore scene to something truly special

i appreciate the depth in which you pick apart songs that's unlike other reactions ive seen! if you're looking for a non-metal/shoegaze recommendation you should listen to Love Your Neighbors - Your Neighbors which is a shorter album :)

I also recommend listening to The Garden's "Horsesh*t on Route 66", a really good art and hardcore punk record.

This is my favorite album of them (maybe my username hints at that? Lol). But yeah, I agree with you on most stuff.
To me this is clearly the moment where they sort of found their “sound”, since each album till this one had a really distinct sound and from this point forward every album feels like a logical progression (not exactly in terms of quality, mind you). So compared to something like Diamond Eyes and Koi no Yokan, it does sound less cohesive.
But the thing is, I had the experience of listening to Saturday Night Wrist in the middle of nowhere and it was one of the most beautiful thing ever. When I started listening the sun was going down, and it fit so perfectly with the vibe of Beware and Cherry waves. Then by the time it got to Xerces it was already dark and I could start to see the stars shining, and by Rivière there was a world of light spots on the sky. I’ll never forget it.
I also recommend you give a chance to Team Sleep, Chino’s side project during this era of Deftones. It’s a really good álbum!

I’m not too sure how true this is, but I’ve heard that UUDDLRLRAB Select Start was recorded only by Steph and Chino, with Steph playing drums. Not too clear who’s behind the other instruments though.

Love this album, think it might be my favourite after Diamond Eyes (although there are better songs on SNW). In fact I see this as a sister album to DE, DE is very similar just a little less experimental.

Hole in the earth ia about Chi Cheng, beacause he has left a hole in our hearts (earth).

It's not, Chi's accident happened in 2008, and he unfortunately died in 2013...
This album came out in 2006, Chi was still in the band, alive and well.
The song they most definitely wrote for Chi was "Risk".

No, Hole In The Earth is Chino writing about the band’s turmoil
