Base on personal experience. The first step is always to determine whether the acne is caused by hormonal or wrong skincare/bad hygiene habit (like keep touching your face with your dirty hands etc). The later one we can still try to remedy ourselves, but if it is hormonal, no skincare can help, either a trip to your dermatologist or even your endocrinologist can only help to diagnose your root problem.

i have hormonal acne and certain skincare ingredients also help, like azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, niacinamide, retinol, tea tree, etc., so it's not entirely true that no skincare would help. they can help a lot in controlling the situation. also good hydration and moisturizer helps a lot, dehydrated skin and damaged skin barrier = more acne. a lot of people who are struggling with acne think they should dry out their skin instead (i used to think so too). but it's very important to visit a dermatologist, of course! prescribed topical retinoids or isotretinoin are the still the most effective, especially for severe forms of acne

@@universe986right? I also have hormonal acne and I’m just tired to get rid of them with strong medication so honestly the dermatologists usually just help with that. Definitely a right skin care won’t cure anything but helps a lot.

For real I have done every skincare on the list even treating it with 2 different antibiotics. It always healed it a bit but I'll always and always break out after a while. Y'know what helped me? A good birth control that balanced my hormones.

the step of reforming your skin barrier IS important, but as someone who’s been suffering from hormonal acne for almost a decade, in order to understand and mitigate the severity you basically have to visit a dermatologist, especially if you have moderate to severe acne.
actives are also important, but they need to be balanced with moisturising and soothing ingredients, and used properly (e.g retinol with active suncare, letting your chemical exfoliants work into the skin, not layering too many together at once, etc)

No need to villainize bp. Just because benzoyl peroxide didn't work, doesn't mean it can't be an option to others. God knows how many people found relief in using bp. It's just a matter of knowing what works for your skin and what doesnt. It may be stressful and costly, but experimenting (using safe skin care products) and putting together the best routine for your skin is usually part of the journey. Although there are for sure some who easily got rid of theirs using conventional acne-treating products.

For me it was mostly good hydrating skincare, diet and the Yasmin contraceptive that worked for me. Differin also helped. BP irritated my skin, same with Duac so couldn’t use those. I had dry skin as well so hydration rather than stripping products was what suited me

How did you hydrate your skin. I have only found one cream that is thick enough to actually hydrate my skin overnight but it's giving me comedones and acne. Anything else I use doesn't hydrate my skin as much and I can feel rough skin by touching my face. I don't know what products to use to truly hydrate my skin overnight

vitamin c is known to cause breakouts for people with sensitive skins. Unfortunately for me, i'm one of those people so it always breaks me out really bad. Just wanted to mention for anyone acne prone with sensitive skin i'd be careful with vitamin c specifically.

  • @ggazetta1

It seems that you're overlooking the acne problem and suggesting that a gentle and hydrating skincare routine is gonna work in general. And although it might be the case for individuals who are overstripping their skin or have bad habits, this is usually not a solution for most acne problems, and I'm not even gonna mention hormonal acne.
You're over simplifying acne treatments and with years of experience treating acne, I can guarantee that most acne cases WILL require at least one form of treatment, either that will be benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, adapalene or prescription retinoids. Soothing ingredients and a very gentle AHA will only cut it if the patient was damaging their skin barrier with a harsh routine or not doing one at all.
For someone reading the comments struggling with acne, don't rely on youtube videos but rather visit a board-certified dermatologist to find out what is really causing you acne and have the right treatment.

I'm a 32 year old girl. I came from Bangladesh to the UK this September.
I'm a student here so I have a limited budget on skincare. I want to try Korean skincare products. But I have faced some skin problems on my face like different types of acne such as painful big acne nodules, blackheads, Whiteheads, pustules.but actually I'm not sure about what types of acne I have.
And I have got acne scar , it looks like post-inflammatory erythema or pigmentation, texture & sun tan problems since 8 months. My skin type is now combination to dry dehydrated acne prone skin like dry patches come from my skin. And i haven't been used any retinol products before.
Also I have been facing severe hair fall. I have serious dandruff problems also.
I need your advice ,guidance & product suggestions . I am eagerly waiting for this from you. I always Love your videos so much.

If we want to keep using benzoyl peroxide (it's the only thing that works for me; I use a prescription), are there products/ingredients we can use to mitigate the generation of free radicals? :( I don't have the side effects anymore after the purging period.

Here's a quick answer from Dr Dray - ua-cam.com/users/shortsao608cgQR4Y . Basically, you shouldn't be concerned with this. I really don't like how Liah discussed it in this fearmongery manner when BP is a tried and true treatment that is often among the first things a dermatologist would prescribe for acne.

I used benzoyl peroxide for two years then one night my face got really itchy, red and hot so I switched to adapalene, and after a year my skin felt also uncomfortable with it 🤷‍♀️
Also I’ve been taking meds for acne for three years now and they are not really working I think I’m just wasting money
