      Not to mention Ghost in the Shell which, when given a strong female lead to start with they still found a way to botch and make her just another WAHMEN. If they had done her just like she was in the manga they would've had a film 10 times better and it would've cost them the same amount to make it as the one they DID make.

    Star Wars has killed all the original lead characters. The replacement characters are underdeveloped.
    Also, Wonder Woman was Captain America with a female lead; Someone comes into super powers, uses a shield in a World War, and a woman loses a man named Steve because he dies in an airplane disaster. Still a good movie, and I'm still pissed that they made her a goddess instead of just letting her be a great warrior/person that gains super power from her armor.

    so to believe this study you would have to believe that these movies would have done worse if they had male leads. the star wars franchise was bound to make a billion regardless of who was in the leading role and wonder woman was bound to make tons of money as well so long as the writing was good which it was. not to mention the only reason solo flopped was because of the last jedi and had pretty much nothing to do with solo itself. we know this because nobody went to see solo in the first place meaning nobody was willing to even give it a shot. if it failed on its own merits it would have had a good opening weekend then a sudden drop as reviews came in.

      Solo also suffered from one of the writers going on social media and screaming about Lando's sexuality a week before release. I somehow doubt that the parents of those '8 year old girls' Kennedy claimed they were making the films for would be minded to take their 8 year old to see something with sexual content. I just can't imagine many parents wanting to sit down and explain sexuality to their kids. Assuming they even knew what a 'pansexual' was. Most probably assumed it involved sex with equipment found in a kitchen.

    • @hammerheadms
      @hammerheadms 5 років тому +2

      By this articles logic Solo failed because it did NOT have a female lead. So if we fast forward several years to when Disney completely remakes the entire Star Wars saga, the most logical thing they can do to make it MORE successful is to cast a women for the part of Han. Then Leia will become her lesbian love interest, while Lando supplies the genetic material for Ben Solo to be born by way of surrogacy. The Millennium Falcon will then get a rainbow paintjob instead of blue, and just to check off all the boxes they will rechristen it the Eon Sparrow. They're gonna BLOW THE LID off the box office with that one!!!

      Yes! A-ha! Thank you! To reach a scientific conclusion, you need scientific controls. But reproducible conditions are impossible. No one is going to watch a movie with a male lead and then the same movie with a female lead and say what they like or would pay for more. They saw the movie once! They're not going to see it again. There's no scientific reproducibility.

    Great video Jeremy! Episode 7 squandered the automatic audience that was on its way following ROTJ. Ultimately people want good stories and good characters who fit into stories. They seem to forget that Princess Leia and Padme and Gal Gadot's Wonderwoman are all strong characters in fantastic stories. Rey is not a proper character and her story is not stimulating. Princess Leia and Mulan are genuinely incredible characters. Development. Genuine awesomeness. Take Detective Foley in Beverly Hills Cop - again a great character. Jackie Chan's Detective Lee in Rush Hour - great character. I think Naomi Scott would have been a better female protagonist than Daisy Ridley (who seems arrogant) playing Kira Skywalker in a proper set of Star Wars sequels. Oh yes, forgot to mention other great female characters (on the movie and TV screen) - Aayla Secura, Adia Gallia, Shaak Ti, Ahsoka Tano. Also I just wanted to share an old BBC video I found with Mark Hamil, he makes Star Wars sound so beautiful. ua-cam.com/video/RDZZDmEyKIM/v-deo.html It is sad that gone is the grandeur of Star Wars with the likes of the new artificial characters.

    2:10 it is a test created some decades ago to see if a movie had valid female presence, or if they were just npcs for the men to conquer, basically, there need to be at least 2 women in the movie and they need to have at least 1 scene in which they are alone and talk about something other than men (which doesn’t really makes sense, as movies such as Tomb Raider and Alien would get classified as not having strong female representation), as a side note: in the Last Jedi, the only scene in which Leia and Holdo are “alone” they talk about what they think of Paul, and there are no other scenes with only women in it. The test it self is not woke, it originated as a measure for which writters could have some more diversity of character in their stories, it works like the “3 act structure”, it is a sugestion that should help you develop better writting and nothing more, but woke communities don’t get it and believe it mandatory for a movie or novel to follow it as a commandment, basically it shows why woke movies go wrong, they follow the “how to basic” guide by the letter, instead of taking it as a guide, and not a command

    Are they kidding me?! As a female, I call major bullshit on this report. Female protagonists like Ellen Ripley, Wonder Woman, and Katniss Everdeen show female characters done right. Female protagonists like Rey, Captain Marvel, and the new female Ghostbusters characters show female characters done wrong. As you said, nowadays, they’re not even bothering to properly develop female characters like they used to. It’s like they want to hand everything to these new female characters without making them go through the natural process of struggling, working through their struggles, make them likable, and make them relatable for the audience. Along with this, they would tear the male characters down in order to elevate these female characters who haven’t truly earned anything to lead a story. It’s terrible. All characters, whether male or female, have to have proper development, balance, and structure. If they don’t, they are not truly characters. They’re just structurally unbalanced shells. I hope that somebody out there who is either a professional writer or simply likes to write stories understands this and write female characters like normal characters.

    I think the NPCs have a bug in their code, since they are skipping data.
    Ghostbusters 2016?
    The Nutcracker?
    Oceans 8?
    A Wrinkle in Time?
    They intentionally skipped this because it didn't fit their narrative. This is literally a direct example of propaganda.
    Real facts: Good story writing and good characters make money.

    I’m all for strong female characters, and I totally agree Wonder Woman was fantastic film and a great portrayal of a hero! I still like Rey but it’s the way she’s written that makes her so well blah! Another female character that I really don’t think gets enough attention or credit is Mad Max’s Furiosa! She was an incredible incarnation.

    Women have far more disposable income than ever before. That's what Hollywood is going after. My wife and her friends go to movies and watch far more t.v. than I do. The last movie my wife and I went to together was TFA. She thought Rey was great and didn't care that Han and Luke got shat on. Of course she has no knowledge of or appreciation for Star Wars. Women are driving Hollywood like they're driving everything else. It won't get any better. All Hollywood need do is dish out strong Wamen characters in charge of "sensitive," inept, nonthreatening, "interesting" boys and females will stampede to the theater to lay their money down. Hollywood will lose their male audience but the bean counters probably have it figured as their best business move going forward.

    I also noticed that, in *RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET* , the climax does not have Ralph saving the day, but those fatuous Disney princesses do, who when Ralph helplessly falls, quickly make up a dress and suspend it and have him fall in it, symbolically emasculating him and setting him down in a bed in a parody of Sleeping Beauty. The message is, "Boys, don't depend on being heroic, let Grrrrrrl Power save the day! Let them take over, what will it hurt?"

    Based on just the movies that are talked about in this video, I think there may be some biased in the study. Star Wars is a one of the greatest movie franchises in history. Just the name alone will net you a ton of money. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if the burlesque parody group makes more money from their Star Wars shows than they do the other titles they parody.
    Wonder Woman is a popular DC character and one of the core members of the Justice League, so that'll draw in a fair number of comic book people, then those who enjoy superhero movies. Plus people like Gadot's performance in Batman v Superman, so they'd go out and see her stand alone movie to see if she can hold things on her own or if she's an ensemble only type.
    Then you have Beauty and the Beast, which being a Disney movie will get lots of people showing up. Didn't the Jungle Book live action movie also do quite well? Then you have the upcoming Aladdin and Lion King movies which will probably get quite a bit of viewers showing up because they're both Disney movies and beloved classics.
    Had they done more original movies or more low key gender swap movies (Ghostbusters and Oceans come to mind), there would probably be a much different outcome. The two mentioned movies were terrible compared to the original versions. I wouldn't be surprised if the female version of What Women Want ends up being pretty bad (though the trailer did look a little amusing, I feel that their requirement of an R rating (compared to the originals PG-13 rating) may make it feel worse since an R rating doesn't automatically mean something will be better, just means they can get away with a lot more, but they don't always play it smartly, just look at some of Melissa Mccarthy's movies, they have R ratings but honestly? weren't all that good because they try way too hard to be edgy and funny only to look like idiots. Hell you could probably compare some of her movies to the (male lead) movies that they parody and find that the numbers don't favour her that much.
    Can female lead movies be great? Sure. When done right. As mentioned a million times, Sarah Connor and Allen Ripley, two of the most badass and well developed female characters in movie history. You can also easily add Princess Leia (even if she wasn't the lead character), Mulan, Rapunzel (and a few other Disney princesses for that matter) as well as some others that I can picture, but can't recall the movie they're from for the life of me (I blame the hour) to the list of well developed and loved female characters. All that people ask is that they're treated properly, meaning they have a back story (or at least points of reference, like we know Luke is a good pilot because another character is able to vouch for him before the battle against the Death Star instead of him simply claiming) instead of being a Mary Sue like Rey.

    Notes;
    1; Lawsons comments about Wrinkle in Time fail to put them in context. She wasn't concerned with the opinion of white men, as in the critics, as the film wasn't made for that demographic.
    2; Of the top films between 2010-2018. The Top 5 contains only one with a female lead (The Force Awakens). The top ten has a 50/50 split. (Three of which are Star War's films, which would explain their inclusion rather than the gender of the lead) the top 20 only has 8. (Wonder Woman is actually number 16)
    2a; If you exclude both the Star Wars and MCU films, on the not unreasonable assumption that they are established franchises that would have done well regardless of the leads gender, you end up with a roughly 50/50 split. 6 of the 11 remaining are male lead films, the remaining 5 have female leads.

    All great points. I'd also like to know the methodology behind the "study," e.g. what is the criteria for something to be considered a "female-led" movie. For example, TFA (Rey & Finn) and Beauty and the Beast (Beauty & Beast) each arguably have two main characters, one of which is female. Are they considered female-led? Or is the top-billed star the deciding factor? In that case TFA is led by a male (Harrison Ford) and so is TLJ (Mark Hamill.) Maybe the methodology's totally legit; but I suspect that whoever conducted this study engaged in some manipulation of the critera to get desired results. As usual.

    I'm all for movies with wahmen at the helm. If their movies can earn more money and *IF* those movies are actually any good then more power to them. I gladly welcome them. The examples cited by this "study" are really all exceptions to the rule at best and far from being the norm. It's like if I said all the Transformers movies were good based solely on how much money they earned since the first one. This is a huge part of the problem with modern "journalism"; citing studies that treat specific exceptions as if they were the prevailing reality.

Wonder Woman improved due to word of the mouth it was good bc it opening week was not all that and her being in the JL movie did nothing for that movie. Star Wars was SW.
