    There are two kinds of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu - one for sport, and one for self defense. The self defense linage is under Helio Gracie, but the sport linage is under his brother Carlos Gracie. Carlos and his sons felt that making it a sport would cause the art to be more widespread, so they focused on sport, created the global federation of sport jiu-jitsu, and created rules and time limits and tournaments, and eliminated the parts of the art that address strikes and other self defense elements of it. Helio, as the main creator of the Art, wanted to stay focused purely on Self Defense so he and his sons split from Carlos. if you want GJJ for self defense, go for Helio's linage, if you want to go for sport then go for Carlos's linage. Each of these branches are in fact VERY different from each other.
    It's explained here: ua-cam.com/video/6344FL3T-bU/v-deo.html

    The difference between Gracie Jiu Jitsu and any other BJJ schools is that back when Rorion Gracie started his school, he copyrighted the name "Gracie Jiu Jitsu" so that only he and his sons could use the name "Gracie Jiu Jitsu" and no else can... Not even his siblings. But his other siblings can use their full name like "Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu" Or "Rickson Gracie Jiu Jitsu".

      You can't copyright a name, and you don’t “copyright” something-you have a copyright in your original works of authorship as soon as you write them, automatically, courtesy of federal law. No copyright notice is required. No copyright registration is required. You have the right, whether you like it or not. Rorion registered a trademark.

    I personally train at a Gracie Jiu jitsu academy and the only difference i see between our gym and others in my city is the white belt curriculum. Our white belt curriculum is organized with more strike, weapon, and hold defenses for the casual practitioner but less actual application for the sport of BJJ whereas other jiu jitsu schools teach more techniques that can be applied during rolling/sparring but after blue belt it’s all pretty much the same as far as more advanced techniques go in my opinion

    I went to a Royce school and got my blue belt from him. Royce lives in California and travels to do promotions and seminars, so it is not a name drop as Ramsey is suggesting. It is no different than what Royler or Rickson does. Royce's black belts have the blue bar on their belt in honor of Helio. Eli Knight is a Royce Gracie Black Belt, if you want to see an example. There is the Helio's lineage and his brother Carlos' lineage for Gracie Jiu-jitsu; both who studied under Judoka Mitsuyo Maeda.

    So speaking of Gracie's Jiu-Jitsu schools four schools from the lineage, I have found three schools reasonably close to me physically speaking.
    One of them studied under Carlson Gracie and he seems to have a fun energy family oriented type of school. He actually happens to be my ex girlfriends friend.
    Then I found another school that is if you look them up Gracie Barra very tournament orientating like extraordinary tournament oriented. And then of course I found a Gracie's University certified Training Center which is where I go. All three of these different places have an extraordinary different feel to them the reason I chose the certified Training Center is because it follows the exact curriculum that I signed up for and it focuses first and foremost on self-defense. It's also rather affordable compared to most jiu-jitsu classes

    • @turntablesrockmyworld9315
      @turntablesrockmyworld9315 Рік тому +2

      Haha if it's a "fun, energy, family" then it's not true Carlson JJ as his training was not like that at all. He didn't train families, he trained fighters and would train some people who weren't "serious". Old school Carlson black belts were similar to him and had tough schools. But perhaps times have changed..

    I want to make sure I understand what you said, the Machados can trace their lineage back to the Gracies even if they did modify and cultivate their own JJ style. I did read that Oswaldo Fadda can trace his leaneage directly to Carlos Gracie.

    • @bobricher85
      @bobricher85 4 роки тому +1

      That's sort of right....Machados can trace their lineage to Carlos Gracie (who learned from Maeda). Oswaldo traces back to Mitsuyo Maeda through Luis Franca. Jacare Sousa is a black belt under the non-gracie lineage.

    • @mikerotcherson
      @mikerotcherson 3 роки тому

      The Machado's mother is the sister of one of Carlos' wives, so they share a grandfather with Carlos Jr., but they largely grew up with and trained with Helio's sons. They even used the Gracie name for a while.

    • @ropongi1008
      @ropongi1008 3 роки тому

      @@bobricher85 I would think that today in 2020, that either lineage would be very similar if not identical. I would think that today in 2020 that one could argue that either lineage would have/or would actually be the same art, both leneages have evolved and morphed into what we would now refer to as modern "BJJ". With everything that has come out now, both lineages have practicley become the same art again, just as they both derived from the same art.

    Maeda's Japanese friends Sataki, Shimitsu, Laku and Omori were also the fathers of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, since GJJ came directory from Maeda->Carlos Gracie->... The whole world is talking about the 2 Gracie brothers as the real founders of BJJ. That is wrong, the Gracies were the founders of GJJ. Let us all never forget Luiz Franca (The same class where Carlos Gracie was a student of Maeda) and his student Oswaldo Fadda... Fadda continued Fraca's philosophy by teaching BJJ to the poor, instead of only the middle or upperclass of society. The Gracies were for the wealthy Rio's City Centre, while Franca worked in the favela's and the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. BJJ was created for all people from their fathers Maeda -> Sataki -> Omori, Franca-> Fadda. Never forget the root differences between BJJ en GJJ!! Osu!

    Now at first I dismissed this as Uncle Chael being Uncle Chael, trash talking to catch your eye and get a response... but as his trolling skills are impecable, I still can't help but wonder if there is any truth to that. My experience lies mostly in boxing and I know nothing about kickboxing or muay thai, so I wouldn't know. I decided to watch some clips and, yeah, there seems to be a difference in head movement in these sports but I still decided to ask the People's Coach of China because it's a fun topic and because you'd be able to illustrate this without the mesmerizing and confusing Sonnen banter...

    Have a question for you Coach Ramsey.
    Are you familiar with Wladimir Klitschko and if so - what do you think if facing such kind of opponent or opponent with similar state of mind and physical prowess.
    A little summary for those who are not aware who he is he is and too lazy to google him.
    Heavy weight Boxer from Ukraine, with height of 1.98 m (6,49 ft) and weight close to 110 kg (242 lbs), aside from becoming world champion he is considered highly educated and very intelligent in both his normal life and professional decisions, he also is considered of having high fighting IQ and is usually very calm and calculative during his matches.
    So good training, good work ethics, intelligent decisions while being relaxed and focused in a middle of a high adrenaline engagement.
    I'm not saying he was one of the best boxers or anything similar, but he is one of the champions in our most recent history and his recording and stats are easy to find and observe, also while professional and obviously very successful he was not even considered one of the toughest fighter, but using his strong sides to their fullest.

But he also competed in UFC 4, which he also won (that legendary match against Dan Severn), and in UFC 5, when he had his rematch against Ken Shamrock in the first Superfight ever.
    Anyway, great videos!

    If being able to trace a martial art's lineage to the Gracie's make it a Gracie Jiu-Jitsu then any martial art that can trace it's lineage to Judo should be called Judo hence all these BJJ schools should be considered Judo.

    First, I think the term, "McDojo" has really strayed from its original meaning even on the McDojo Life channel.
    "McDojo" has become a catch-all pejorative that can range from anything from a martial arts school teaching hokey (bullshido) or controversial styles of martial arts (e.g. think Rex Kwon Do in "Napolean Dynamite") to a club with a non-certified instructor, to a school that might be legitimate but lacks affiliation credentials.
    The original meaning was a chain of martial arts schools with cookie cutter curriculums (pardon the alliteration) and having senior (sometimes a non-black belt) instructors of the headquarter academy's head instructor, be the head instructor of one of the chains. Chuck Norris had a chain of schools in the 70's.
    As for various jiu-jitsu styles, aside from gi vs no-gi, the differences in styles is quickly shrinking with the advent of the internet as everyone adopts everyone elses' moves. UA-cam, especially, is a free repository for all the high level techniques you ever want to know. Everyday some high level BJJ professor is uploading techniques to UA-cam be it Marcelo Garcia, Andre Galvao, Keenan Cornelius, John Danaher...and let's not forget all the UA-cam guys like Chewjitsu, and Ramsey Dewey here who specialize more on the mental training and motivational aspects of martial arts which is equally important because learning techniques is easy part -- It's breaking through the plateaus, setbacks, and walls that are hard.

    Real question what's the difference between bjj and nawaza judo? Answer is not a damn thing besides the Gracie's fooling everyone into thinking they created bjj but in reality it's just part of the very practical and complete traditional martial art know as judo. Judo even has wrestling style tackdowns and some boxing punches in it .

      @turntablesrockmyworld9315 Рік тому

      I can comment based on my experiences. I trained Judo in late 1980s, and the ne waza was more aggressive, and pin-focused and less technically refined.much more basic. I can also say this with confidence because I was fortunate enough to train at school a few times where the instructor was known for his ne waza in Judo and won a lot of matches that way, I was probably there around 1996. In the early 1990s I trained BJJ and dropped in to a few good Judo schools. I could submit a lot of the black and brown belts on the ground as a white belt, or at least stalemate if i could weather the initial aggressive attacks. I could almost always double leg and single leg most Judoka as well after a wrestler had me drill them. BJJ was a refinement of Judo grappling due to time constraints, and at least in the 90s, its emphasis on fighting. Both arts complement each other well.

      I don't agree. In think it is an aspect of it, but I think it was just marketed that way. It is a fighting style that developed in its own way. Looking at the history of its development from the turn of the 20th century, I am not sure this was the case. It was an effective system.

  • @russellward4624
    @russellward4624 4 роки тому

    The difference is marketing, that’s it. There’s no difference. The only difference is in the instructor. How good a teacher is he or she and how knowledgeable are they with the techniques. The reason Rorion, Royce... try to separate themselves with this nonsense about self defense and sport is there students suck. After 30 years they’ve not produced a single good student. Rorions kids developed a couple. But they need an excuse why that is. So they claim others are teaching sport BJJ which is absurd. And that’s the reason there students get crushed in the UFC and grappling tournaments. The real reason is they don’t want there students to be any good. They don’t want people to be better than them.Rodrigo Gracie is a friend and he brought a mutual friend of ours to train with Royce before his fight with Matt Hughes. He was told not to submit Royce. He did anyway, was told not to come back. I know others that were told the same thing. That they have to let Royce submit them to save his delicate ego.
