The mission of InsideOUT Writers is to reduce the juvenile recidivism rate by providing a range of services that evolves to meet the needs of currently and formerly incarcerated youth and young adults.
Using creative writing as a catalyst for personal transformation, these young people are empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully re-integrate into our communities, becoming advocates for their future.

More than 2,000 young people are currently incarcerated in Los Angeles county juvenile detention facilities and worse, once they are released, more than 70% will be re-incarcerated. InsideOUT Writers, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is dedicated to breaking this vicious cycle through its Writing and Alumni Programs. With your help, we can help more young people stay out of jail and in their schools and communities, where they belong.

I was in juvenile hall from 13-18 years old. In and out all the time on drugs and doing gang shit. These kids do need help and they don’t get the help they need. I am 31 years old now and I graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering at 27 years of age. The key was not hanging out with the old crowd. Sounds simple enough but extremely challenging.
