Ok. Raise the tax level to match that then. Experts predict 60% of farmers with 250 acres plus will have to sell of 20% of their land to cover the tax bill. Who will buy that land? Not farmers but companies who are exempt from this.

The reason why farmers want to make the farm bigger is so it will make it more profitable. tenant farmers are always looking for the opportunity to buy their own land. It’s how it’s always been. but in recent years land doesn’t come up for sale very often. if you wanna point a reference just look at the Yorkshire shepherdess, the farm they run is tenanted. but they’ve managed to buy. I think it’s 48 acres and that means the world to them. They finally have some of the own land, and I can assure you the chance for then to buy more they certainly will.

I live in The Netherlands, a country which produces far more food than the UK despite being tiny in comparison. The argument that we would starve if some people who inherited extremely valuable farming land had to pay IHT on it is a joke. If someone is sitting on 5M of land and only earning 30k a year then it's economic insanity continuing to farm that land. It's worth 5M, they can sell the land, pay 1M tax, take the 4M and put it in an investment account. There it would earn between 100-200k a year in interest. They could take 60k out - DOUBLE their yearly earnings - for literally doing nothing. Their savings would appreciate and compound. In a decade that 4M will be 6M at 5% gains (and the markets are higher than that).

Farmers aren't to blame for the Vale of their family home increasing, just like the value of your grandmother's home!!! But inorder to carry on farming it's needed to farm, no money changes hands, and nothing is sold. If sold there's capital gains tax anyway!! Lets be clear - Farmers being "Cash Poor" is largely a *Strategy* for dodging taxes. If you don't show profit, you don't get taxed. My family grew up farmers, everyone around us were farmers, and the end of year discussion was always "what can we buy as a farm improvement/capital investment to put us in the red or wipe out all of our profit so we drop into a lower tax bracket?"
If you are cash poor sitting on a 5 million investment, that is a you problem in managing that asset, and I think we actually should be MORE incentivized to take it off of you via inheritance taxes, because there's somebody out there who can't hardly manage it worse!

what everyone in the comments and british airwaves fail to understand is that the argument is not that FARMERS ARE POOR it is is that SOCIETY IS BETTER OFF WITH SMALL HOLDERS THAN LARGE CORPORATIONS CONTROLLING LAND AND FOOD. Everytime a "multi-millionaire" farmer sells, guess who is buying? A billionaire or a corporate giant or a private equity company. This is just hiding the real wealth that is waiting for the farmers to close shop and throw in the towel. I totally disagree with the ultra capitalist view taken by this commenter. Yes, industrialized farming is more profitable but is it better for society? Is it better for food quality and health? Would society be better off if those farmers moved into the cities to work at McDonalds? Or do these farmers represent the pride of England, our deep pastoral tradition stretching thousands of years? Yes, everything changes, but it is the most disgusting form of false conciousness because it makes farmers seem like richie rich when the hoarders are wealth can't hold in their happiness as they wait for family business to go under. Bye bye farmers of generations of caretakers of the land! Hello American agri business!!

If you have farm land and your not using it to farm then your not providing the necessary service. Farmers already get squeezed every way they can, yes there is money in assets, but this forcing farms to be sold to company’s to make a mass farm, or to land developers ect. The way I understand it is farms and farming are no longer a high profit industry leading to the industry being asset rich and cash poor. This has been brought about by 4 main factors, super markets driving down the price of the goods, climate change bringing inconsistent weather leading to inconsistent harvests, the lack of seasonal workers leading to higher wage costs at harvest and/or a proportion of the harvest being left to rot and the lack of subsidies since leaving the EU. I would however argue that the farm industry has by and large brought this on themselves. The farms chose to get in bed with the supermarkets 40-50 years ago and those that did bought up the smaller farms and profited from it immensely, it has only been the last 15 years or so that the super markets have really driven down those profit margins. The farms/country side dwellers have blocked so many planned wind and solar farms which would have reduced the impact of climate change. The farms (mainly owners rather than farm workers) voted in a majority for Brexit that resulted in the lack of seasonal workers and loss of farm subsidies. I have some sympathy at being forced to sell a farm that has been in the family for generations but at the end of the day you would still end with over £3m in your back pocket so that sympathy is seriously limited. Rather than moaning about paying a tax, they should be protesting the causes of the drop in profits that mean they apparently can't afford to pay this tax without selling their farms. Rejoining the single market, protesting climate change and protesting the stranglehold the super markets have on the industry. Also, just like normal inheritance tax, 50% of people think they will pay it, whereas only about 4% actually do.

The average farm in England is 88 hectares, but over half of the country's farmers only own 20 hectares or less. 88 hectares is 217 acres. The average cost per acre is £11,000, so the average cost of a 217 acre farm comes to £2,387,000. This means that the average farm family won't get taxed at all. They will only get taxed on anything over £3M. For example, a farm worth £3.5 million will be taxed on £500K. Moreover, farms who hit this threshold will get ten years to pay it off at no interest. But remember, most farmers own less than 20 hectares and will come nowhere near that threshold.

It’s always really a matter of the very, very well off trying to use farms and “small business” as a justification for why there can’t be an estate tax. In the US, it doesn’t apply at all to estates of less than approximately $14 million, and the amount that IS due is only a percentage of the amount OVER the $14M. Conceptually, I’m ok with there being some exemption for people who are actually running farms up to some threshold where you’d defer the taxes being due, but if they ever sell the land off or stop using it for agricultural purposes, the taxes are owed. I’m ok with the limits being high to some degree, but unfortunately that nuance always gets lost and you have people arguing about people losing family farms, when they can show no farm that’s ever been lost when someone inherited a $10M farm. What it’s really about is the owners of Wal-Mart wanting to pass on billions with no tax.

First by forcing austerity on them, and all of us; and then by leading tens of millions of people up the garden path and lying to them about the benefits of Brexit. There are NO benefits to Brexit! - that's the point.
And if the Labour government sign a Trade deal with America, British farmers will get proverbially 'shafted' a second time. Because this would mean cheap, inferior quality American beef, and chicken flooding the UK market....and becoming freely in our supermarkets.
And if it's cheaper, more Brits will buy it. Simple. Putting more Farmers out of business.
No doubt though, many British farmers can't see this or don't realise the danger they would be in, were American beef, and chicken available in our supermarkets - at cheaper prices. They probably don't see any of this at all.
