GREAT reaction! You got the backstory quite well. She sacrificed her former J-Pop life in order to be reborn as a metal goddess. Some day faaaar in the future you should watch the whole concert, of which this particular performance was the climax. The concert is about Su-Metal´s transformation, and it is a little backstory about her. The Kami Band (I love the nasty bridge Mikio Fujioka and Leda Cygnus played here, they sound phenomenal) joined the ladies for a 5 song encore in this concert.
    Btw., we are #notacult 🤣
Some small details you should know about: the opening riff is an hommage to Metallica´s "One", as well as the crumbling statue at the end is a hommage to them. The ladies (the original trio) learned from Metallica, what metal is about. There´s a photo showing them, sitting at the side of the stage at a Metallica concert, watching the show. I believe it was in Leeds, UK.
After Yuimetal´s departure at the end of 2017, the song wasn´t performed anymore (there´s the "Shin" version, but it´s a totally different beast), as it is essentially an opener which is meant to introduce the ladies to the crowd. We missed it A LOT!
On 2nd April, 2023, the day after the announcement of Momometal, we finally got "BABYMETAL Death" back! This particular performance was great, too, as you can hear the crowd welcoming Momometal, loud and clear. It´s available on their official YT channel, released for the 10th anniversary of the release of their first album "BABYMETAL".
Until that day I didn´t expect to experience BABYMETAL Death live myself. I was so happy that I experienced it as a concert opener. It is great!

You nailed it at the end here when you said "Definitely not what I expected." Even at this early stage Babymetal were all about breaking expectations. I was really interested to see what you'd have to say about this and as usual, interesting and informed. FYI: The phenomenal guitar solo was played by Mikio Fujioka. Who sadly passed away in 2017. R.I.P.

Great reaction as always, with the context you have for this song, the one before it in the setlist is a lament "BABYMETAL | Akatsuki (Unfinished ver.) | LIVE at Legend 1997" where she sings her last song as an aspiring idol before sacrificing herself to become a metal goddess. It is the storyline of the whole concert. They are theatrical to the core.

    Good one, thanks!
Nothing to see here. Just Su-metal celebrating her 16th birthday with her friends and some of their fans (like 9.000 of them) all chanting DEATH! DEATH! DEATH! DEATH!... haha...
Now seriously, this is from the concert Legend 1997 - SU-METAL seitan sai (SU-METAL's 16th birthday party). It took place on December 21st, 2013 at the Makuhari Messe event hall in Chiba (Greater Tokyo Area).
This was (and is again now) usually their opening song but this time they used it as a closing number. The meaning of the whole thing is the sacrifice of SU-METAL, giving up her mortal life as a human and Idol to reborn as a Metal Goddess. It was the final act of the show, which was an allegory about BABYMETAL's transition from a J-pop idol group subunit to a legit metal band. It also was partially themed around "Evangelion" (don't know how familiar you are with it).
The beat of the intro and the final statue crumbling are homages to Metallica. The neckbrace thing is an homage to X-Japan's Yoshiki Hayashi.

    Translation to the opening monologue:-
    •メタルの魂を守るため
    自らの命と引き換えに戦った
In order to defend the soul of the Metal,
in exchange for her own life, Su-Metal fought.
    •やがて SU-METALの魂は
    紅の炎となり
    Before long, SU-METAL's soul
    became the crimson flame
    •天空を紅く染めたのであった
    and dyed the sky crimson.
    •だが 遠くの星が消えゆくように
However, as the distant stars go out,
    •命の終焉はこの世の理なのだ
the end of life is the law of nature.
    •今紅き月がSU-METALと共に燃えゆく• • •
Now the crimson moon is burning out with SU-METAL.

The Destruction Of The Statue is similar to Metallica Justice for All live concert in Mexico City, Mexico 🇲🇽.
The Japanese word "desu" (です) is a copula (= to be). The Eastern Japanese almost drop "u" of this word, so the word "desu/des" sounds like "death". And someone started writing "DEATH" instead of "です" (desu). It makes sense only where the Japanese word "desu" is expected to come. The title "BABYMETAL DEATH" means only "We are BABYMETAL." No relation to the death itself.
I'm not sure of its origin, but I saw long before such a character as a vampire or a death metal singer in a comic and all his "です" (desu) were replaced with "DEATH" to emphasize his character. With such an air, it works well. Without such an air, it probably doesn't work.
There is a genre named "Death Metal". The sound of this tune seems to fall within that genre, and the lyric writer may have put many "DEATH"s to emphasize the Death-Metal-ness. It might be alright to use many "DEATH"s without thinking of death if some of Death Metal bands also chose their style just to differentiate themselves rather than driven by the feeling about death. But I don't know the Death Metal well.
    MAKUHARI MESSE:-
Makuhari Messe (幕張メッセ) is a Japanese convention center outside Tokyo, located in the Mihama-ku ward of Chiba city, in the northwest corner of Chiba prefecture. Designed by Fumihiko Maki, it is accessible by Tokyo's commuter rail system. Makuhari is the name of the area, and Messe is a German language word meaning "trade fair".
    •Owner: Makuhari Messe, Inc.
    •Opened: 9 October 1989.
    •Expanded: October 1997.
•Classroom-style seating: 304 (International Conference Room).
    •Banquet/ballroom: 1,600 (Convention Hall).
•Theatre seating: 7,860 (Makuhari Event Hall).
Makuhari Messe is close to Tokyo Disney Resort in Urayasu, and to Chiba prefecture's black sand beaches. It is accessible from Kaihimmakuhari station on the Keiyō Line of East Japan Railway Company (JR East). The center is the host of the annual Tokyo Auto Salon (modified car show, in January), the biennial Tokyo Motor Show (in October), the annual Tokyo Game Show (video game hardware and software exhibition, in September), the annual Jump Festa (manga, anime, and video game exposition, in December), and the biannual Wonder Festival (toys, scale figures, and garage kits exposition, in February and July). The venue was host to several Nintendo Space World events.
It will be the venue for certain sports during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

    ⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀
The song 'BABYMETAL Death' is usually used as an opening number to get the crowd hyped up.
    Usually without a crucifixion. : )
This performance was very unusual since it was used as the closing number.
The song title and lyrics are a play on words in Japanese.
In this context, "desu" can mean "I am" or "We are". It's pronounced "des", which can sound like "death", especially if you stick your tongue out a bit when you say it.
So when they say "Su-metal Death!, Yuimetal Death!, Moametal Death!, BABYMETAL Death!", it also means "I am Su-metal, I am Yuimetal, I am Moametal, We are BABYMETAL".
    The rest of the lyrics are just spelling out "B - A - B - Y - M - E - T - A - L" one letter at a time.
There's a bit more context in the introductory narration:
    Legend One-Nine-Nine-Seven.
It is the story that, receiving the legendary corset from the god of the Metal,
she abandons being human and shall be reborn as a goddess.
The gene which has been determined from ancient time
is destined to be guided, boarding on the ark of time.
    The apocalypse prophesied
    the DOOMSDAY. Towards it,
    there remains...
    little time...

    It‘s quite Metal, isn‘t it? :-)
The play on words has already been explained below. The „lyrics“ are perfect for an introduction song, so the song is usually played right at the beginning of a set. I‘d say it does a pretty good job at getting the crowd hyped. This extended version with the crucifixion was an exception, this time it had been moved to the end for the special occasion. It was performed one day after Su‘s 16th birthday and marks her rebirth as the Metal Goddess.

I am sure someone has said below,
Su-metal : j-pop idol dies and is reborn as Su-metal the queen of metal. The Statue behind represent Su-metal rather than "mary".
Just noting (again), Desu (silent U in Japanese), sounds like Des. Japanese don't have "th" so death sounds like des, so it comes back to a play on words which Japanese love. Just like babymetal is a play on words of heavymetal (where in Japanese baby and heavy are very close in kanji and spoken).

I've heard that this was also a nod to Metallica(intro "One")and the fall of the statue = lady Justice on Metallica's Justice for all tour years ago. Koba the manager, is a big Metallica fan. Also the neck brace, as also seen in the "Headbanger" official vid, a nod to X-Japan's drummer. And lastly, Alice Cooper, crucified on stage...has been his schtick for decades.
When I first saw this performance, I was a little taken aback...as a Slayer fan, the main riff and solo, feels very slayerish to me.
Anyway, hope to see you continue on the Babymetal front. Cheers!

I'm not sure if you know that the audience is spelling out B A B Y M E T A L as the girls do the arm movements. Also the girls are saying the word desu after their name instead of death. The U is silent and it basicly means "it is" or "I am".
    Su-Metal des
    Yuimetal des
    Moametal des
I think the guitar plyers were using Kemper profiling amp heads into Marshall 4x12 speaker cabinet at the time.

The growls on early Babymetal tracks were supposedly done by Takeru Yoda, though he was not credited and it's not clear if he did all of them or, if not, which ones. The studio version of this track is fairly similar in structure - they usually play it as their set opener as a way to get the crowd hyped, which is why it doesn't feel quite like a complete song the way their other stuff does. That being said, I love this song and often listen to it just to pump myself up.
While I usually don't recommend listening to their early studio tracks because the mixing is fairly atrocious and, at least for the first album, the drums are actually just tracked, I do really like the studio version of the solo in this one. I wish Mikio had gotten a little closer to it in this performance, but I guess nothing's perfect 😄

    Haha hell yea bro!
    “Desu”, silent “u” = “I am / We are”.
    But “Death” is more metal.
So “Babymetal Death” = “we are Babymetal”.
Just an innocent song where the girls introduce themselves 😂.
Intro song for their 1st album, and most concerts. Used here as an epic closer for Su’s 16th birthday.
Symbolism: Suzuka Nakamoto, the idol, pop singer, and mortal, dies. Then reborn as Su-metal, a metal goddess.
    🤘🦊

  • @Grington300
    @Grington300 17 днів тому +21

Great reaction. There is nothing odd or inexplicable happening here ( #notacult ), just Su-metal celebrating her 16th birthday and being crucified by her two good friends while 8-9000 party guests jump up and down chanting "Death Death Death".
The intro helps with explaining what was about to happen (you should find the translation in the description unless you found the version that has subtitles for that).
That whole concert (Legend 1997 - Su-metal's 16th birthday celebration ... she was born in 1997, this was Dec 2013) was like a rock opera from start to finish and it was all about Suzuka Nakamoto transitioning and giving up her life and existence as a J-Pop Idol to be reborn as the Metal Goddess Su-metal, chosen to lead the Metal Resistance.
The whole song is based on a pun. The English word death sounds to a Japanese speaker like the Japanese word desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp.
Desu means to be - as in I am, we are, it is etc. Basically the lyrics for this song are: "B_A_B_Y_M_E_T_A_L" ... "I am Su-metal", "I am Yuimetal", "I am Moametal" "We are BABYMETAL" ... "Death Death Death Death Death Death Death Death".
This was the first song on the first album - what better way to introduce themselves? Usually it would be the first song of a concert - at Legend 1997 it was a special occasion, so they used it for the finale as Su completed her transition.
The opening riff is an homage to Metallica's 'One', the statue crumbling is an homage to their Lady Justice statue from the Justice For All tour in 1989. The neck brace is an homage to X Japan's legendary drummer Yoshiki who had to wear one after damaging his neck headbanging.
Growling vocals are anonymous (I think somebody has said they did the growls for the first or second album, I can't remember which or who it was) and were on track (and from the crowd singing along).
They didn't play BABYMETAL Death at all after 2017 (Yui was not performing and she left the band in October 2018) ... until they brought it back on April 2nd 2023 when Momometal was revealed as the new third member - and the loudest cheers happened when she introduced herself "Momometal desu".
They only crucify Su on special occasions - the Legend S performance in 2017 for her 20th birthday was even more spectacular - and they had a lot of extra flames.🔥🦊🔥

For those who say BABYMETAL is not metal, I present you with BABYMETAL Death.😉
OTFGK, but an interesting take posted on BABYMETAL REDDIT by VulpineDeity:
Take it a step farther. Not only does 'SU-METAL DESU' mean she's introducing herself, it's also her super-hero transformation phrase.
Like on Sailor Moon, Usagi says 'Moon Prism Power!' and turns into Sailor Moon, Suzuka Nakamoto shouts 'I AM SU-METAL' and becomes possessed by the spirit of the Fox God and transforms into the Metal Goddess SU-METAL.
The magical girl who transforms into a hero is a huge trope in Japan, comparable to Disney princesses in the west. BABYMETAL DEATH! follows the trope and it's the moment that they all transform into their magical alter egos at the start of the show.

    @Icipher353 17 днів тому +12

The screams are on a back track. Noone knows who did them as it's uncredited on the album.
Babymetal Death isn't a normal song with full vocals, it's used as an intro for their live shows. The song is actually them introducing themselves to the audience by spelling out the name of the band B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L-DEATH! and the girls announcing their names "Su-metal desu" (desu means "I am" or "we are"). Desu is used as a pun because it sounds a lot like "death", so they are introducing themselves and saying "Death".
The Legend 1997 concert was held to celebrate Su-metal's 16th birthday. It was also the first big Babymetal show following their separation from Sakura Gakuin (the idol group they started as part of). This performance was meant to symbolize the death of the J-pop idol Suzuka and the birth of the metal goddess Su-metal, so it's all about symbolic apotheosis.

This is actually Babymetal's calling card. It's the first song on their debut album. The sound of the denizens of Vallhala and Hell locked in a brutal war with 'I'm Su. I'm Yui. I'm Moa.' spoken over the top of it in a polite manner. A lot of people don't know that Koba, their producer/creator wrote this song. (Kitsu of Metal God and KxBxMetal are both Koba's names)
The rebirth as metal godess coincided with Su leaving Sakura Gakiun and becoming a metal singer on a permanent basis. All 3 others members got crucifed to mark the end of their J-pop career paths. This is why people calling them J-pop artists is considered an insult. Idols? yes, J-pop idols? NO! They're metal idols.

Exactly. Suzuka Nakamoto, the J-pop idol collapsed on the stage and died that day. Her body was offered to the Fox God, He accepted and resurrected her as Su-metal.
The destruction of the statue brought the end of an era.

People always seem surprised by this. Aren't all teenage girls crucified for their sweet 16? 🧐

LMAO,. Su sacrifices herself and is reborn as the Goddess of Metal. They have a few Metal Theater performances. They had all 3 of them on crosses not too long ago.

I was a bit worried of your opinion here ;) this song is more than weird for "newcomers". It is almost fanatical in some way. It took me some time to like/get it, so I appreciate your not judging and trying to understand the song. 👍

You already got plenty of info about this so I'll just say that I forgot to stop this at the end and it switched to a vocal cover of Kingslayer and I was like who is this (didn't recognize it was you), it's a great cover, went to your homepage and was like holy crap it's the dude that's been doing great reacts to BM lately, I had no idea. Anyway, if anyone hasn't heard it, his cover of Kingslayer is really good and you should check it out.
You always ask for other bands to check it out, so here's a couple suggestions, if you haven't heard of them already:
Hanabie. - (pretty much pick any song from their channel)
    Nemophila - G.O.D
STMLT - Antimental (MV or live, both are good)
