  • The audio in this video helps attract martins to your area. The audio was recorded in a colony of 300 nesting martins in Washington, IL. Recommended to play it in the morning between 4 AM and 6 AM to attract sub adult martins to the area. The original CD is 71 minutes long, this is a 6 hour loop of that CD. Good luck getting martins!!
The 71 minute CD version of this can be purchased at the following Amazon link: amzn.to/3r4ENr5

This really works! My experience is you don't have to play it early morning. My first success was playing it at 1 PM. I just opened my birdhouse yesterday February 26, 2020 in north GA. Started playing this at 9:30 this morning. 15 minutes later, an adult male arrived and started checking out the house (6 rooms - all 6" x 12"). My guess is he will come back with a female and most likely other adult males looking for a spot to attract a mate to nest. The colony started 2 years ago with 1 SY pair + 1 bachelor- 5 fledged. Last year: 3 ASY pairs + 1 SY pair. 13 fledged, This year I'm hoping for a full house!

terry brice what device did you use to play this? Would you just put your iPad outside?

@@susiesgrassfedmeats1060 The laptop alone doesn't put out enough volume, so I wire my PC to a home theater system (amp), and move 2 speakers outside and crank up the volume. I turn it off a short time after birds arrive - birds act sort of confused when they arrive and find no colony, but it doesn't deter them from hanging around. I believe birds locating the house is all that's needed. They stay and bring others with them during the day to see the house and vacant units. So far this year, I've only had adult males stay a few days. One drove off any other males trying to claim a unit. But I've seen no females, so the males leave, looking elsewhere for a mate - hopefully they come back. SY pairs should start arriving soon.

That’s great , thanks for sharing . I would love to do that but it kind of scares me with the upkeep and checking the boxes . We had successful bluebird nesting and fledging this spring 2021 , then the tree swallows took the house , successful. Now bluebirds the same box again , even though we had another . Now we have a proper swallow house . Those Martin houses aren’t cheap . Love the video sound

Renting a house and the landlady said the martins haven't been back for years since they had to move the house after a winter storm.
    I'm hoping to change that!

I put up a colony and have a call box that have attracted them. The colony has been up for 3 weeks. There are up to a dozen birds that will perch on the rods every afternoon and evening…..but not nesting. Then leave at dusk. Is there a chance they will nest in my guards? It’s May 2. I live on Lake Murray in South Carolina

That's how martins are. . . . . until they nest you will see them early in the morning then again late in the evening, but the rest of the day they will be out flying around. If they are coming back every afternoon I think they are there to stay and will nest. Good luck, keep us posted!

Moved to Almost Canadian Northwest from the main flyway junction in South Texas where migration routes diverge to all diections North. Beautiful indeed here but always a chill in the air..Martins are scarce here and are expected in May. They love to nest near the water here in single goard type nestboxes..I just have 2 twelve unit boxes and not right on water. Hope the recording helps. Otherwise will have to relocate boxes to a park pond nearby.

I’m planning on putting my first Martian house up tomorrow. So I never knew actually playing this would attract them too. This is so exciting. Should I use my portable radio to play this so it’ll be loud enough? I don’t think my iPhone would be loud enough by itself. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you all.

The first time I got them to show up I was playing this on my iPad. My recommendation is if you have a portable radio or Bluetooth speaker that would be the best. Obviously the louder the better. Good luck, keep us posted if you get any.

Agree with Jumble - the louder the better, then turn it down when birds show up. Like I said before, it sort of freaks them out when they don't fi what they think is a colony. After birds have successfully raised a brood, they will return year after year to the same spot, so I no longer have to play the dawn song to attract birds. As birds return they make their own noise and also go out searching for mates they then bring back.

Not sure if you mean the CD or Bluetooth speaker so you can broadcast this video. For a Bluetooth speaker this is the one I use: amzn.to/3y0KnP9
For the CD I have a link in the video description for Amazon, but it is currently out of stock. It is currently in stock here: naturehouseinc.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=263

Put a house up, next morning came outside to see a pair checking it out. Started playing this loop and about a dozen more came. I think they are mostly from the colony of about a hundred down the street. This also helps deter house sparrows. Two pairs were trying to nest in the house but once I started playing this consistently they got annoyed and went away for good.

Joey Nicholson Where are you located?

    • @nofrojo

G W Florida Panhandle, it’s really late in the nesting season to be putting up a house but the Martins don’t seem to care as they have begun nest building.

Joey Nicholson - I’m in S Indiana and this will be my 2nd year trying to attract Martins to new housing. I think I opened up too early last year. Fought bluebirds and tree swallows. Successfully got them to move out of my house and into gourds and houses. One pair of swallows fledged two clutches of eggs. We had tree swallows galore in August! Currently I have two bluebird houses occupied and a gourd on a shepherds hook occupied by a pair of swallows.
Had some Martins stop over one cold rainy morning a couple of weeks ago but I’m sure they were just passing through. I believe that some of the sub adults that I hope to attract are yet to arrive.

G W Yeah my main competition is house sparrows. I’ve offered the house sparrows alternative housing further away from the martin colony and they appear to have accepted it. It really helps having a much larger martin colony down the street as many of its sub-adults search for new colony sites.
