I think the major difference is in the feel when playing, because sound wise i'm not a guitarist but i'm a producer, and even though the Fender sounds better it really isn't that big of a difference when put into a song. I can guarantee you the listener won't tell a difference in the final product.
Iisteners who are not guitarrists or musicians usuaIIy don't have a cIue about which guitar is being pIayed in records, and sometimes they don't even know if it's guitar or not. 🙂
I bought a Classic Vibe some years ago because I needed a Tele style guitar just for a couple of tunes in the middle of a long live set. I kept it for quite a bit of time, had a nice sound and was a really overall reliable guitar. Sold it when I had the opportunity to get a good deal on an american Original '60, but really I could have kept gigging it forever.
Not useless at all as a comparison, I would say... Just goes to show how good the CV Squier is.. Great playing as always, nice video, keep it up Sasha..!
The Tele is such a basic guitar theres not much that can put one higher than the other as long as they are built well. If you don’t like how one sounds change the pickups!
@@toledo2983 I had both. The CV has that 50’s sound where the Affinity is modern. Thats what should be considered. My Affinity was sold in favor of the CV.
Now I’m really glad I picked up a used 2014 Chinese CV for cheap. It sounds, looks and feels great, got brass saddles, larger Alpha pots and Alnico V pickups. $200. Good to go!
I have the older Chinese-made butterscotch one with Tonerider pickups. The only mod I did to it was to install a 4-way switch. I can't imagine how that guitar could sound any better. There's a video on UA-cam where a guy replaces the stock pickups with Texas Specials and it sounded EXACTLY the same. I've played and owned a lot of Teles, and the CV '50s Squier (the Chinese ones, anyway, I don't know about the ones made in Indonesia) can stand up to any American Fender straight out of the box. In regards to this particular comparison, though; the Custom Shop Tele had a little more output, maybe a touch brighter, but that's about it. They both sounded good. Just a touch of EQ on either guitar could make them sound identical.
Yeah. People tend to swap pickups by default without even listening carefully. I think they sound great. If you were blown away the instant you took the guitar the first time, than the pickups are good enough.
I found that the Squier has his own feel. The Fender does sound more " agressive" or maybe it is your playing. I really enjoyed the "softer vibe" of the Squier. Pleasantly surprising that Squier CV!
I have three telecasters the CV, American performer, and the American professional II. They are sound very different... but I can't sell my CV because it sounds so good... different than my others but just as good. I haven't played the custom shop model... but I highly doubt that it sounds better than all three of mine just different. I could be wrong but again I highly doubt it. You just need to adjust the eq and volume better for each guitar and then you'll realize that the more you pay doesn't always equal better tone... just different tone. But keep trying yourself that. I don't have a custom shop telecaster but I have a core 24 PRS, a fender American custom strat, etc and the CV holds up stellar against the best guitars I've ever played in terms of tone...
This video is not useless, it serves to demonstrate how good of a value the Squire is. I saw another video where someone put some Texas Heat pickups (can't exactly recall the model) in a Squire CV and the difference was not worth the cost of the pickups. After reading a lot of the comments below, its apparent to me that the custom shop albeit being a differently made guitar with better hardware, different applications of lacquer, and more attention to detail, spending the extra money on the marginally better sounding custom shop is for the purists that want to also listen with their eyes and have the glory of owning a "Custom Shop Fender", which I understand. However if you are listening with your ears, it's probably not worth the extra money as the Squire is well worth its cost and sounds terrific.
Honestly I think the pickups on the Squier sound just fine. Perhaps change out the switch for a four way switch and a treble bleed cap would be all I’d do to it.
The CS has better highs and clarity. Probably mostly down to the pickups - change those out on the squier for higher quality electronics and you will likely get very close
I picked up a used Squire CV Tele for ~$250, put a fender twisted tele pickup in the neck, a fender nocaster 51’ pickup in the bridge and it both plays and sounds awesome through my deluxe reverb reissue (especially with the signal split/phase reversed so you can play into both channels of the deluxe reverb at once)!
Do you have a video of this setup? I used to have a MIM Tele which I then installed with Twisted Teles on both PU’s but then sold it to get me my first NEW Fender Strat. Now here I am looking for a CV it looks like.
I think this was a much fairer fight than this guy was willing to admit. I thought the Squier sounded warmer and fuller than the Custom Shop while nailing all the classic Tele tones. Also notice how the Squier stayed in tune throughout the demo. Someone else said it, so I’m stealing a comment, but this is a useless comparison because the Squier, at 1/3rd the price, won!

The profile of the squir cv is the best ( same neck for both 50's and 60's custom) and to me , the usa sounds better then the mexican, but the squier sounds better then the mexican too🤷♂️ the only reason i disnt left the store with the squier tonite, is that i cant decide between the cv 50's butterscotch and the cv 60's custom sunburst. Not really a Tele guy...but then I fell into the whole blackguard butterscotch folklore deal...decided I was going to get one... compared, CV, Player, American original...went CV. Aside from it being a bit of a boat anchor, it’s really a great guitar for when I need a Tele fix!

Very late to the party. Picked up an identical Squier 50s CV this week and it's amazing for the money. Got it in pristine condition, a return from Amazon Warehouse for £220 UK money. re the demo. In all honesty and as many others have commented - the sound difference to me is also minimal at best. Lovely playing and a video that's made me feel really super happy with my bargain.
Both sounds great but CS bridge pickups sounds bit better. I would choose CV anyway because I don't like relics. I love candy glossy shiny urethane finish. looks delicious aren't they??
I wasn’t aware that any of the squiers had the 5 hole screw pattern on the scratch plate. That to me is a big plus as I love the 5 hole pattern for some reason.
Rather than comparing sound I'd be more interested in a comparison of the nut height, fret dressing, saddle adjustment needed? You can make them sound very similar with the right peddles or a pickup change but if the fretboard/neck is bad you will always struggle to make it feel nice to play.
I have been a gigging and studio recording guitarist since the 1960s. I have amassed a sizable guitar collection over that time…in-fact I own a number of vintage guitars including a 1957 Telecaster. I also own a Squire Classic Vibe 50s Telecaster which I purchased when they were first released (they had brass saddles at that time)…I find it to be a very good Guitar once it has received a proper set-up. I would never think of taking any of my highly valuable guitars out on a gig…because of the risk of theft. I take the Squire Telecaster, a Fender Mexican Strat and a PRS SE Paul’s Guitar out on gigs…not the much more expensive versions of those guitars that I own as well…these guitars do a great job and are valued such that if someone stole one I would not have a huge loss. The Squire Classic Vibe 50 Telecaster has a great price/performance ratio…and with a proper set-up, is perfectly capable of being used as a gigging guitar.
That's why we love these Classic Vibes so much as well. It's a lot of guitar for a very affordable price. Especially if you have a vintage beauty like you do, you don't want to risk anything. If something happens to a Classic Vibe you'll be sad but not nearly as sad as with a vintage guitar. Thanks for sharing your story, Pete!
I have a Fender Japan TL-52, Fender Mexico Baja, Fender Mexico Road Worn, Chinese Squier Classic Vibe and an Indonesian Classic Vibe Esquire. I also own a Nash T52 style Tele. All are great players. I love the pickups in the original Made in China Classic Vibe. The mods I've made on my Classic Vibes were all to better fit my opinionated desires: Baja Necks and upgraded bridges. Great guitars and best bang for the buck.
-the custom shop's more responsive - more resonance, with more "crunch" and "chime" sound / -the CV's slightly more "solid" sounding, and gives a slightly rounder, warmer tone - the CV has a much better appearance - the comparison's not unfair - the CV may not be as good as the custom shop guitar, but it's comparable, soundwise - the CV may not "feel" as good to play, but the sound is comparable, especially if the 2 guitars were being played in a mix - as you say, the CV's a great guitar for the price - and I agree - better pickups are a good idea - an mfd on the bridge, and a texas special on the neck
This video, which I found absolutely not useless, confirms my huge curiosity of how two guitars exactly like these can sound different (or not) by correcting the main biases, i.e. the pickups and secondary, the hardware.
The Squier sounds pretty good - I own a Fender Custom Shop Tele and Fender Nashville Tele , I'm buying or actually trading an Epiphone Les Paul Custom for a Squier CV Tele . I probably will change out the Pots and Pups . Well maybe , I'll see how they sound first - Nice playing and video Max.
Can you put some Fender cs nocaster pickups in the squier? That would be a great match I think ;-) also for another comparison idea: vintera roadworn vs custom shop tele?
A few amp tweaks, or a change of amp as the CV is lower output, and how close could you get them ? Maybe that should have been the demo, how close can we get the CV to the custom tone ?
Buy a CV Squier, then go to Guitar Fetish and order the alnico gold foil Tele pickups, with the Tele pot and control assembly. Put it all together, and get a guitar you will use more than a Custom Shop.
Hey, if you have the dough, get a vintage Fender. If you want a fantastic budget Tele, get a squier, do some simple upgrades and enjoy. Thats what I did. Super happy, spent far less $, invested my savings in another Gibson. Love the neck on the Squier.
I have the white 50s vibe Squier with Alnico 3 pups - this butterscotch one has Alnico 5s but sounds so similar! I actually like ceramic pups for the softer sound in my other Squier Teles. Hope this helps.
For the money, the Squier Classic Vibe is the better deal. Face it no Telecaster is worth the money paid for them. Of simple design, construction, and easy to manufacture, It is as most who buy and play them, not highly sophisticated, being more dependent upon the amp and effects to get a sound that they like. I've been playing for forty-plus years, and I include myself among them.
For me my playing ability and my bank account, I can’t justify getting a custom shop guitar , but the classic vibe definitely gets the job done for someone like me.
I had an all original 60's tele, and a custom shop reissue. The vintage guitar has a colorful tone, which gave me fresh ideas. There are reasons they sell for big $. Ferraris cost more than Chevys. But they both get you there.
They both sound great. I believe squire guitars are great value. upgraded tuners (totally optional) upgraded switch plate with new pots and pick ups. But all that is really required is a professional set up by someone competent and you have a playable instrument.
ditto here....got Lindy Fralin Blues Special....disconnected tone pot from neck pup and it sounds even better. oh, brass saddles too. Hard to put down these last few weeks...
I own a 2002 Mexican Strat and an Epiphone Les Paul '56 Gold Top (with P90 pickups) but bought a Chinese CV Tele from a friend back in 2016 because I wanted something to keep in open G for those Keith Richards moments. However, it turned out to be a great guitar and I use it for slide and even in standard tuning for those Albert Lee moments. To be honest, the Custom Shop Tele sounded fine but I don't think the difference in sound is worth the difference in price.
On solidbody guitars, it is way better, to have more weight. You do not play with a Microphone to pick up the acoustic sound, so less vibration in the body means better response of the string and Pickup sound. While playing, everybody can feel, like yourself, that you payed way too much money for the custom shop guitar.
There is quite a bit of difference. The custom shop Tele is brighter and clearer - how it should be. I guess i was hoping for minimal difference, so I could snap up a CV and think of all the bucks I saved.....but I'm sure Fender are too clever for that! Cheers for the comparison. Would be fun to hear the difference with different pickups.
big agree. the squier sounds as if it has the tone rolled off a smidge compared to the fender. looks real handsome and sounds good for the money, but the difference is pretty obvious.
a set of Lindy Fralin Blues Special transformed an already decent sounding guitar into a killer. I also disconnected tone pot from neck pup which improved tone/balance/clarity a bit. LOVE my CV50!!
Both functional serviceable workhorse guitars. Get one or the other .. or get both ! You’ll worry less gigging with squire. I’ve seen Vince gill playing a squire. 🤷♀️ Or get an mim player series .. nice happy medium … happy with mine !
Honestly ! A comparison of both guitars only makes sense if both have the same pickups installed. Furthermore, it makes a big difference whether I have brass riders or chrome riders on the bridge. And both guitars should have the same strings on them. Custom shop guitars are not worth the money at all. Overpriced! Get on stage and play both guitars. The audience doesn't hear the difference in the band context anyway. The same in the studio. Nobody hears a difference. It's easier to hear an amp on production than a CV Squier or a Custom Shop guitar. Both guitars sound good on the video. One sounds like this and the other like this. None sounds bad or better. Everything else is imagination.
You are definitely paying more for less weight (3 pounds maybe) better hardware, better fretwork, better electronics, better nut. If you don’t mind upgrading electronics eventually and a sticky neck the Squier isn’t too bad a purchase at all
I have a Squire Telecaster. I hear that wooly sound from the cheaper neck pickup. It’s easily fixed with EQ. The Custom Shop sound wise anyway, is not $1,700 better
With the fan going in my office and through an iPhone speaker, the first comparison sounds the same. Lol. And my CV is more resonant than I had expected. But I’m sure the playability and feel of the Custom Shop is a thousand points better than the Squier. And I’m sure those pups actually do sound better than the CV.
Next time change the strings on the Classic Vibe. Most people don’t know that Fender ships them with 0.008” - 0.041” strings. It DOES make a difference.
How about changing the pickups in both guitars say to Texas Specials and comparing...leveling the playing field. Obviously Fender downgrades pickups at price-points.
Great play!! The resonance is pretty different but the cost is also pretty different. My CV strato isn't punchy but it's OK due to reasonable price. My ex Fender CS strato was awesome tone.
as far as i am testing these guitars, the affinity/standard is much better sound than CV. Also when i bought my bass, the standard bass was much better than all the CV basses i tried in the shop.
@@toledo2983 Thank you☺️ Interesting. I just once tried Affinity and was terrible condition. CV even CS have variations in quality as well as far as tried.
Not useless but unfair is right. Anyway the Squier is great for beginners or people who just want to keep cool not taking much care of their guitar or also those who just don't want to break the bank for a guitar. Sure... The real fender baby is better as an instrument.. At some point money has importance.
Not useless at all, it shows how good sounds Squier until you listen to the Custom and then things change but the Squier can be used without problems for professional use... in other words, it's like comparing a Maserati to a Ferrari...

Which just goes to prove in this case it’s the player not the instrument.

What pick ups would you put in the Squier? Great vid btw....
Might be interesting to put the CS pups in the Squire and the CV pups in the Fender, then compare?
Swapping saddles might also be a hoot.
Maybe that should have been the demo, how close can we get the CV to the custom tone ?
use an EQ and add some air et voila
Buy a CV Squier, then go to Guitar Fetish and order the alnico gold foil Tele pickups, with the Tele pot and control assembly. Put it all together, and get a guitar you will use more than a Custom Shop.
The lighter guitars usualy sounds better? Have you ever played a Les Paul?
To make this video somewhat *useful* you could have made some recommendations.
Which pickups would you put in the Squire?
from a producers ear..id go with the classic vibe
Hey, if you have the dough, get a vintage Fender. If you want a fantastic budget Tele, get a squier, do some simple upgrades and enjoy. Thats what I did. Super happy, spent far less $, invested my savings in another Gibson. Love the neck on the Squier.
I think the Squire sounds fantastic? I have a CS 52’ and I would still throw down for the Squire!
Give the classic vibe the same pickups as the custom shop tele and then see how if the difference is so great!!!
The Chinese Squier Tele CV is even better than the Indonesia Squier Tele CV used in this video
Squire wins hands down...mine has brass bridge saddles
I had an all original 60's tele, and a custom shop reissue.
The vintage guitar has a colorful tone, which gave me fresh ideas.
There are reasons they sell for big $.
Ferraris cost more than Chevys. But they both get you there.
Yes I would like to see/hear the comparison with the upgraded pickups in the classic vibe ! Thanks for the great video !!!
They both sound great. I believe squire guitars are great value. upgraded tuners (totally optional) upgraded switch plate with new pots and pick ups. But all that is really required is a professional set up by someone competent and you have a playable instrument.
I have a CV Tele, and I found it’s pickups to be muddy and not exactly awe inspiring. I replaced them with a set of Lollars, and now she is amazing.
ditto here....got Lindy Fralin Blues Special....disconnected tone pot from neck pup and it sounds even better. oh, brass saddles too.
At least the squire was in tune lol…hear the difference as soon as you played the fender…but have to say your playing MADE the squire sound good 😬👍🏻🤘🏻
On solidbody guitars, it is way better, to have more weight. You do not play with a Microphone to pick up the acoustic sound, so less vibration in the body means better response of the string and Pickup sound. While playing, everybody can feel, like yourself, that you payed way too much money for the custom shop guitar.
You mean USEFUL. Nice playing and good comparison.
I'd be happy and honored to have the opportunity to even hold a vintage custom shop Tele.
Come by our store I'd say!
My mans didn't like how the E sounded in his alt tuning so he literally just took the whole damn thing off in seconds while he was playing
Your playing sounds lovely on both. And finally that's all that matters.
I love that bridge pickup on the Squire!! 4:07
Both functional serviceable workhorse guitars. Get one or the other .. or get both ! You’ll worry less gigging with squire. I’ve seen Vince gill playing a squire. 🤷♀️
Or get an mim player series .. nice happy medium … happy with mine !
Happy to listen someone playing a T like this. The T like to be hurt.
I wouldn't pay that much for a CS, but those CS pickups sure sound good!
the squier sounds good
Yep try "better"pickups ,pots
Freeway-6way switch ,output jack electrosocket then compare
And new knobs or drill em
if there is more resonance felt in the body, (as in the Fender), would that not affect the sustain? Great playing, Thanks.
Yes, that would improve it!
The Squier is the better guitar, you are right.
The classic vibe might benefit from a saddle upgrade as well as pickups. The saddles are as important as the wood on a tele
They already are bonenuts what to upgrade?
@@rico4772 the saddles are part of the bridge. The nut is at the end of the neck.
@@twenty3electronics ohh sorry, you’re right :D
Ordered a CV for Open G at gigs/ Prolly wont even replace the pups, its a nice sounding piece.
Wow, what song is the first take from? the neck pickup one?
I think that if you’re like me, playing by yourself and for yourself in your basement or garage, the Squire more than deliver what you nees!
I have 7 Squiers CV (4 from China and 3 from Indonesia) and all faces versus my Fender Telecaster Brent Mason very WELL
I like the cheap one better on looks, but the custom shop one sounded more stable and played better. The player seemed to have a bit more freedom.
I knew there was something special about this guy. He's got balcan soul.
@@bluesysamurainao4557 i would not say that about the build quality more about the sound quality to my taste.
I agree. I just once tried Affinity and it wasn't an amazing tone to me. Even CS are the same in my experience.
I got a classic vibe tele it sounds pretty good not everybody can afford to fork out 2grand for the American model
Fender pickups are slightly more present, that's about it for sound, they're both great.
Not useless but unfair is right. Anyway the Squier is great for beginners or people who just want to keep cool not taking much care of their guitar or also those who just don't want to break the bank for a guitar. Sure... The real fender baby is better as an instrument.. At some point money has importance.
I honestly at a certain point sound isn’t a whole lot difference but it’s about the feel and presentation to the player.
Not useless at all, it shows how good sounds Squier until you listen to the Custom and then things change but the Squier can be used without problems for professional use... in other words, it's like comparing a Maserati to a Ferrari...
