    Those old air cooled Deutz mills are some of the most reliable engines ever built. Always wanted to swap one with pre-chamber heads into a small pickup.

      Dad had a 3 cylinder Deutz off a pump system from a cranberry bog in NJ.
      He drew up plans to build a Motorcycle, with a mid 80's Gold Wing
      from the transmission back. Sadly he retired, and then never got to it.
      My Brother had a scrap man come in when we were at his funeral, and
      got $30.09 for Dad's lifetime of parts. (was sickening)
      If you wanna do something, today is the day to start.

      Came here to say the EXACT same thing. Other things might fail, but that engine will run as long as it has oil.

    Deutz manufacturer air cooled diesel engines for many applications, from powering earthmoving equipment, trucks and a variety of military uses plus power generation Deutz have a history that goes back over a century, surprisingly they are renowned for reliability in desert conditions where cooling air is ducted and directed by a fan to the cylinder barrels and heads which can be more efficient than a liquid coolant in the heat and can freeze and split hoses and radiator cores. The Deutz trucks used by the Germans in WW2 are a good example of the reliability of these products.

    Back in the 70's when the gas shortage was in full swing, the company I was working for converted two of their gas trucks to Deutz air cooled diesels. They were slow but ran super cheap. The one got totaled but the other truck is still running and being used by a farmer to take crops to the auction.

    Knew a guy who put a 4 cyl deutz into a IHC pick up . He drove 20 miles to town for coffee every weekday, filled the fuel tank once a month
    I tossed around the idea of putting the engine from a 130-06 tractor into a one ton , but the one i had wouldn't start if you walked by with a ice cream cone . And being as i live where its below freezing 6 months a year , combined with trying to get heat to the cab , i never did
    I could work a 10 hour day on 15 gallons of fuel and the idea of that fuel economy was pretty appealing

    This was the first Vintage Torque Fest. 15 years strong now and we keep hoping for Denis to make a return visit. Now located at the Dubuque Co fairgrounds. The 15th was just a couple weeks ago. Around 700 cars and 7000 attendance. Amazing show for a good cause.

    I've been around Deutz engines for years. They take some getting used to. The oil cooler sits at the rear of the air horn so any trash or flying debris gets sucked in and makes them overheat. No gaskets on the block or jugs. They don't need warmed up or cooled down just fire them up and pour the throttle to it.

  • @marchess923
    @marchess923 17 днів тому

    They should go back to air cooled. Water cooled can be a costly problem. We had a full size Dodge Caravan, V6 with a radiator the size of my tiny Chevy Sprint, 3 cylinder, 1000 cc/1 litre, 35 h.p. Radiators should be used for axels, trans, transaxels, power steering or any other liquid 1 wants to cool. Automatic trans- missions coolant lines, run throuh the engine's raditor--about 220° +/-. One of the most stupid ideas in auto history. Deutz are good. Plenty of very early 1900s Deutz engines are still good. But you can't beat a cool looking radiator grill & shroud.

    • @LionWithTheLamb
      @LionWithTheLamb 17 годин тому

      My caravan years ago had a roughly 2"x6" auxiliary "heavy duty" transmission cooler installed on it. It was laughable. Years ago my relative had a older Dodge K Wagon and the radiator sprung a leak. I replaced it with a Lebaron V6 radiator. It dropped in and bolted right up fan shroud and all. The only change was a bit longer top hose was needed.
