Have they ever done something similar to large scale warfare. Honestly this seems like it could be a pretty decent representation of medieval warfare. Give two huge armies some land and a couple generals and see who can flank the other.
I would hope england would have a long lineage of excellent knights to draw upon to form their teams. (Also part of me hopes they have actually been knighted by their queen)
The English were famed for their longbowmen. They had knights, and tended to fight dismounted, but relied heavily on utilising their archers to bring down their more heavily armoured, and often more numerous foe. At least during the High-Medieval era that is.
Although i like this, it looks more like armored wrestling or rugby / American football. The problem lies is that what it counts is if a fighter takes another fighter down. Even if they can't drop their weapons, they don't use em really as weapons, they use it a lot to lock the opponent and bring him on the ground more than for striking. This leads fighters to just look tackling and try to make the opponents trip than actually fight. IMHO they should look a way to change the rules to avoid this and make the "sport" more interesting.
The rules were set up to allow minimum restrictions on technique and maximum force to be used with very simple victory conditions. There is no stabbing or thrusting, but pretty much everything else (weapon and shield strikes, punches, kicking, grappling, etc) is legal. You cna even hiot them from behind if you want to (and are able to get into position). No one is counting points, there is no need to "acknowledge" blows. The only thing that "counts" is that when you hit the ground, you are out, and when everyone on your team is out, the other team wins. What type of fight would you rather see? What sort of rule changes do you think would make that happen?
yeah but he has a point. All really dangerous techniques (like thrusting) and weapons (like warhammers) are probably not allowed (which makes sense). What is left is you are best advised to use techniques from wrestling and judo to do the one thing that counts: bring them down to the ground. Nonetheless, great stuff.
gcgrabodan This particular melee does come down to a lot of wrestling, but to judge this sport on this one video is like to judge MMA on one UFC match. There are plenty of factors involved in winning and plenty of ways to win and plenty of ways to use weapons effectively in this sport. You cannot win poften without a good wrestling game, and yes, you should study judo, jiu jitsu, sambo, wrestling, etc, particularly those techniques that involve taking someone down without going down yourself. But you also need good kickboxing skills, as well as knowing how to strike with the weapon you are holding. Teamwork is also important. If you can get a grip on someone that sets them up for a good, hard polearm strike to the head or back or let, then down goes one guy with two of you left standing. If you can distract someone while a teammate runs behind them and knocks them over, same result. If one of your guys can draw three of theirs into attacking him, then that leaves (in the case of a 5 v. 5 match like this) a 4-2 advantage for the rest of your team. Choice of weapons is important, too. If your scouting reports that the other team likes to stand with their back against the fence and let you try to wrestle them down, then bring out a bunch of long polearms and a few good punishers with falchions and punching shields and solid stand-up grapplers. While your close-in guys screen the polearmers, the polarmers can bring down the pain with the polearms until the other team decides it is a bad idea to keep standing.
New York Knights Combat Thanks for the explanation. So, the weapons do significant damage? because the short swords look like the dont do anything. But you can knock someone unconcious with some of the weapons i guess? or are people just bashing each other as distrcation?
If someone gets knocked unconscious they should consider improving their helm and padding, but it has happened. Like auto racing, the quality and safety of your game depends greatly on the quality and maintenance of your equipment. If you have good armor, blows from weapons will affect you less than if your armor is not as good as the other guy. Because the armor works (lie it did in the middle ages), it is difficult to actually hirt someone. But repeated blows can convince someone that they are going to get hurt, and make them less likely to continue standing. Blows can knock people over (win!) and weapon strikes to legs can trip people or knock their balance out. And as I said before, I have seen a good, hard blow to the back, hip, or leg send someone down like a puppet with its strings cut. It's all about what is the most effective move you can execute at the moment with minimal risk. Grappling is an easy, low risk go-to, so it happens a lot, but a skilled and experienced fighter can find moments where a weapon strike is the thing to do. Watch more of the matches on this channel, mine, and others to see the varieties of scenarios, strategies, tactics, and outcomes.
literally just spent an hour watching this and the teams which use two handed weapons seem invariably to win. The sword shield combo seems weak like you say, you just want to blunt force someones head enough that they kindly sit down
There are a variety of weapons used in this game. Most of the "swrods," as you call them, are a type known as a "falchion," used to chop through heavier armor. The trouble with dropping your weapon, is that then the other person has a weapon and you don;t, and then they can hit you in the head or hands or anywhere before you can reach them. Weapkon strikes take a toll on a ersonin armor, even if they don't "injure" them. Also, the rule is that you must have a weapon i at least one hand. If you lose it, you have to run back to your sideline and get one.
This announcer is doing his best to make me not like this. I wish this had a league or whatever they call it crop up and have a season in the USA. I'd watch this over most other things on tv.
There actually is a couple of leagues in the USA. That is where the USA team in the world championship came from. You can see a lot of the action on my channel.
The ratio is hard to determine, but when both wresting and weapon usage are legal, and the object is to put the other team to the ground, you use what works. There are actually a lot of wrestling techniques to be found in medieval fighting manuals.
Hey just a question.... why do they have all kind of weapons and shit when 80% of the time they use their feets, fist and wrestling techniques ? I was like "wtf dude stop going so close to hit him and just destroy him from a distance with your weapon"
wrestling in armor and slapping each other with big pieces of metal is still cooler than most sports even if its not really medieval fighting
how did medieval fighting looked then? thats how it looked, trying to get opponent to the ground by any way and then finish him.
The armor is so solid that the only way to hurt someone with a sword was to thrust into weak spots and that was also rarely was lethal,it was more lethal due to infections that the damage at the spot. Thanks for the explanation.
> The Eastern European team
Isn't Poland central European?
The culture is def eastern european
i like it but the swords don't seem to be doing much, almost seems like youd be better off dropping your sword so youd have two hands to wrestle with?
literally just spent an hour watching this and the teams which use two handed weapons seem invariably to win.
0:25 lower right that haircut tho..
Poland first to fight
Can thus even be a real sport? And I've NEVER even heard of it. With rules, different teams referees and visitors in 2 generations
I bet it can. I even bet it will become a national sport in Poland someday because everyday more and more people want to join in.
There is always big competition between Polanders and Englanders lol
or as normal people call it, Polish and English
wrestling with armor

13:42 *The Black knight has a pretty princess*
This announcer is doing his best to make me not like this. I wish this had a league or whatever they call it crop up and have a season in the USA. I'd watch this over most other things on tv.
There actually is a couple of leagues in the USA. That is where the USA team in the world championship came from. You can see a lot of the action on my channel.
Poland!
more wrestling than actual weapon usage wasn't there?
The ratio is hard to determine, but when both wresting and weapon usage are legal, and the object is to put the other team to the ground, you use what works.
There are actually a lot of wrestling techniques to be found in medieval fighting manuals.
agreed, and as most downed opponents didn't often get back up ..it's taken as an out.
Hey just a question.... why do they have all kind of weapons and shit when 80% of the time they use their feets, fist and wrestling techniques ? I was like "wtf dude stop going so close to hit him and just destroy him from a distance with your weapon"
They have them so that 20% of the time it does not come down to a wrestle.
wonder if that guy in black armor is on steroids
Why do the Englishmen wear Eastern armor???
Because is much cool.
@@Litwinus in my opinion does the Western armor look much better.
@@gevorgvanarmenie9788 but in not opinion of this guy ;) so it's 2:1 for me , because he and I like it more;)
@@Litwinus okay, but it looks weird.
