I LOVE "Heartless Scat", but I think I like this even more. It's got such an 80's metal vibe, I love it.

OBVIOUSLY, A BOOK ABOUT JAPANESE ROCK AND METAL NEEDS TO BE WRITTEN FOR WESTERN AUDIENCES. I WISH JOEL AND FRANK WOULD TEAM UP ON THAT WRITING THAT BOOK.

They have been always great singing ghost stories from the viewpoint of the ghost.

It's ridiculous how they are on album 23 and the quality hasn't dropped AT ALL. So many bands struggle with the "difficult third album".. Ningen Isu are just a steamroller of metal

Amazing! Heartless scat is more iconic, but this one rocks!

Great stuff Joel, you know so many interesting people. Frank's life experience certainly helped make him a credible, knowledgeable and enthusiastic guest. I hope we see more of Frank.

I'm really happy you showed him Ningen Isu! And damn, it would be great to see someone react to Art of Life with you some day :) Maybe the right guest for that is waiting somewhere on the horizon ^^
I will never get the preference for short songs in metal, but that's also just me and it's good we have different tastes - otherwise music would probably be quite boring. Anyhow, most of my favorite songs are 10+ minutes long because I just enjoy the story telling and to hear bigger ideas truly unfold inside my ears etc. Hearing someone say one should cut that down just sounds blasphemous to me XD
But it's also a matter of [sub]genre. I never got into Grindcore for example. 3 second songs? How can that be ANYTHING? Until I listened to Wormrot and they opened my mind and ears for that type of music [of course, most of their songs are longer but most are way under 2 minutes which still sounds ridiculous to me].
I was super surprised Frank remembered Bow Wow/Vow Wow. They're actually still around [same as Loudness - though not as active. Loudness are still releasing LPs every other year, 28 in total by now]. In case Frank hasn't heard of Seikima-II, that would be a really cool introduction for next time ^^
[and speaking of 80s Heavy Metal bands...I have to mention Anthem's new album Crimson & Jet Black here which is simply awesome! So many addictive tunes. They never disappoint]

Still think you should have played Jill's cover of Van Halen's Eruption for him.

Shame you couldn't round to some other Japanese bands. punk, metal, female, fun. So many to choose from. Get him back for round 2.
