In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm sharing a reaction to Eulogy from Tool that I filmed in late May, 2024 as part of our Fan Favorites series on Patreon. As usual, the musicians in Tool thoroughly entertained me and made me think...as well as rocking my socks off! I hope you enjoy this powerful song!

The “F*ck” at the end is the most relatable reaction
This is it. This is the album. You want to listen to a full TOOL album for the first time this is the one.
100% agree, an absolute masterpiece. Didn't leave my car stereo for over 6 months when it came out!
Doug!! Just do the whole discography, it's chocked full of masterful compositions!
💯
I'm here for it! And APC, and Puscifer!
Hmm. Aenima and Lateralus yes. The rest less so.
@@aaroncole3941 Absolutely!
Of course
Lateralus is largely considered their best, but a lot of us will tell you it's this.
Agree!
I'm one of them. Maynard's melodies seem so much more focused and cohesive on this project. They all seem so much more cohesive from a songwriting perspective rather than on later projects like on Lateralus, where the band was tighter and compositions were more complex, but they seem to have sacrificed the cohesive songwriting that drew me to them on Aenima. That's the way I see it at least.
Yep, I'm one of those. This is their darkest album. I like dark and heavy shit.
@@ChuckWasHere Yeah this album they're at the top of their game with more gutteral, personal songwriting that feels more like telling a story than the later more cerebral albums. Which peaked with their Salival live album imho. I was kinda sad Doug didn't pick that version of Pushit.
With ya, Aenima is my favourite, not that I don't like the others but this and even Undertow before the others
one of tools best songs lyrically imo. "come down, get off your fucking cross, we need the fucking space to nail the next fool martyr"
Ooooo edgy
@@theologyofthebody2870 right
@@colinburroughs9871 I love Tool but I don’t miss arrogant blasphemous Maynard
@@theologyofthebody2870 we're a bit outnumbered lol.. but yeah, you found another one who agrees with you on this
@@colinburroughs9871 I grew up silencing this part. I have an uncanny ability to not care about specific verses in TOOL songs and still get the message. I can’t tell you how rewarding it’s been to witness Judith>Wings, pointing the finger to letting go of grudges
11:30 that was the most genuine reaction to a tool song lmao
The hands flapping tho 😂😂
I was laughing so hard!!!
Some Say, He Is Still Air Drumming To This Song, Till This Very Day 😂
“H” was the first TOOL song I ever heard and is what got me hooked, so it will always hold a special place for me. With that said, “Aenima” is special in terms of flow, tempo change, and is Maynard’s voice at its best IMO. It also is a perfect early stop in Maynard’s journey of growth that ultimately (as of right now) effectively ends with “Descending” and “Pneuma”. The stark difference between “Aenima” and “Descending” is very powerful in terms of maturity. And with all of this said, I agree with the other person who said to just go ahead and do their entire discography. Literally every song is a masterpiece and everything connects in different ways to different journeys of growth. Absolutely amazing artists!
This song still gives me chills after almost 20 years later. 🤘Thanks for a lovely reaction to one of the greatest bands to ever exist!
Song is closer to 30 years by now. 😂
Listen to Aenima all the way through.
They really hit their stride on this album.
In order...with headphones!
The sound in the beggining is Maynard singing into a mega phone and just hitting the button in rythum. You can kind of hear his voice in the back ground making the notes.
I saw it as a hairdryer through a megaphone. The hairdryer acting as a conduit for the sound into the megaphone.
Before you do any more Tool, listen to Forty Six & 2. It’s my favorite Tool song because it’s just *ridiculous* in its musicianship.
Like what?
I love how Scene 6:Home seems to take inspiration from it.
For me it's either Eulogy or Right in Two
I am a fan of Pneuma as well. They have Rush on steroids vibes
The new album has surpassed all of the others for me. It took me a while to understand it, but it is truly profound. And I've been listening to them since the early 90's
@@SilkyMJohnsonYeah, everytime I listen to it I like it even more.
Saw them live at the last tour, best night of my life. The songs they played from that album are such an experience live.
As far as only having 5 albums goes....Perfection and greatness takes time.
IMO they take too much time. Their old bassist agrees.
10,000 and Fear are not perfect or great. Patchy and disappointing is closer.
@@user-qk2rt1cn2s 10000 is pretyy fn good
I saw this upload and shouted ITS A METAL MONDAY.
I have a question.... You haven´t heard Forty Six & 2 and you haven´t listened to Fear Inoculum. What are you waiting for??? DO IT NOW!!!
I had heard TOOL through the years, actually played Lateralus once through. I liked them but I can´t say I listened so closely. It wasn´t until right before Fear Inoculum was released that I said to myself that it was time to sit down and go through their discography. That was in late 2018 and I´ve probably listened to Lateralus, 10.000 Days and FI 10.000 times now. Invincible from FI is a masterpiece among masterpieces. Don´t wait any longer. Listen!
Right in Two is my fav tool song. I think Doug already did that one. Would love him to do vicarious
From first listen of this album, this was my favorite song off of it. I still love Jerk-Off (Live) off Opiate also
Here for tool… and the intro to this song is so Epic!
You gotta do the disposition/reflection/ triad trio songs. Those three tracks blend together into one great experience from the Lateralus album
Tool army checking in, welcome recruit!
Spiral out, keep going
This whole album kicks ass
Oh man, I love this album. Simply the best
The intro is so good 👍
This is a great album, and so are the rest. They evolve.
Wow, all those songs you still haven't heard are bangers. Take your pick!
This song is pure energy. Straight up power
I love how Maynard bounces back and forth from major to minor in the chorus, goosebumps.
The verse about the cross is savage
"Aenima" is one of those albums that is incredibly dense and incredibly deep. It did have the one release, "Stink Fist," that generated a lot of interest and acclaim, but as far as the rest of the album goes, every single song follows the Tool playbook (the "Tool-box" if you will?): thought-provoking lyrics, intrinsically-intertwined rhythms, virtuosity-level musicians who hold nothing back, and one of the absolutely greatest voices in rock. This was a CD that I put into my Discman and didn't stop listening to for months. Every song a challenge - every track a treasure.
We all have that one album that changed our musical lives and made a great impression on us. Most of the times it was when we were young and finding our musical tastes. This album was it for me. I was a grunge fan and certainly had my taste in music by 16 but when this album came out, it was profound for me. I would listen to this album daily and still can't get enough into my 40s.
This and Stinkfist are amazing tunes. The whole album is just awesome. Heavy, harmonic and melodic.
you should do "Reflection" if not Disposition/Reflection/Triad if you want an epic. It is hypnotic and so very emotional
He had a lot to say, he had a lot of nothing to say!🔥👍
There's a fair bit of whispered content in this track.
The consensus on toolshed down net was that he was saying
"You could be the one to save me from my own sins.
Well I was so sure that I'd sin, and you would too.
I'm just glad you knew me well enough to always let me sit beside you.
So mad since we stopped following his commands, you weren't too mad when he called, your mind is helpless"
It’s about time
I really love this song, the intro draws me right in since first listen ❤
I listened to this song on repeat for about 5 years.
If you're hitting another album go to Lateralus, but honestly you gotta hit it all.
I remember the 1 time I listen to this, what a great feeling, but im never get tired of Tool Its Just ALL Sync and Genius music. Cheers from Brazil 🇧🇷
I really appreciate these videos. My brother inherent ALL the family musical talent. I cant even keep a rhythm! These videos are time classes in music appreciation.
Oh Danny boy, the drums are callllinnnn 💥💀💥...great reaction Doug ☘️🇺🇸
30+ year fan, Eulogy is my favorite. #Toolforever
Ohh Doug!!! You make me so extremely happy that you did Eulogy finally!!! :DDD
What a great perspective on one of my favourite songs
Amazing! Indeed.
Underrated Tool song, that intro was composed in some really unique ways. That clink clink sound isn’t any percussion from Danny, it’s Adam picking the E and A strings of his guitar below the bridge(the thing near the bottom front of the guitar that supports the strings for those not versed in guitar parts).
As a classically trained musician, TOOL resonates with me musically so well. More than any other non-classical composer or composition.
“Fuck! What a tune. Man they’re good. They’re just good.” Yup. 👍
The piece I want to hear him review Descending off of Tool's last album. To me I can already hear the orchestra in full flight! Please someone tell me I am not crazy
Sooooooooooooooooo Loooooooooooonnggg!!!!!!
Will be here for it.
fun fact: the beeping at the beginning is maynards voice popping on and off on the mic.
Im always here for more Tool! 🤘🌀
Descending from Fear Inoculum is amazing
Best Tool song, imo.
Glad you enjoyed it too!
I got goosebumps watching your first reaction. "Bill Hicks" , but that's just for people reading now, you know for sure. ;)
I commented before the end of the song, hahaha. nvm. Hooker with a Penis is amazing. The grudge needs to be added to your lists as well. You could literally start from the beginning and end up with their newest stuff if you wanted. it IS all good... no bad songs. Have fun.
You’ll want to check out “Wings For Marie (Pt1)” and “10,000 Days (Wings Pt2)” from 10,000 days as well as “Disposition, Reflection, and Triad” from Lateralus. Those songs will take you on long, emotional journeys that will forever change you 💥
I absolutely love watching you react to tool. It is fucking awesome. I have always loved this song. Just melts your face right off. Thank you.
That was the first Tool album i ever bought. It was somewhat outside what i was used to listen to at the time, but it hooked me hard. Over the next few years I was sinking ever deeper into that rabbit hole, exploring every band these people have ever contributed to. What a journey it was. Other people discovering the band for the first time on UA-cam keep those moments alive for me. 😊
"The Interzone" song by The Tea Party (Canadian band). It's an interesting song to analyze.
Eulogy has always been the opus of their prime. Us old schoolers know.
Definitely their best album. Rock on!
Thank you Doug! Awesome video!❤️
Tool, as we know it, really started with this album. It's arguably their best. ❤
Doug, please do " The Grudge" the first track on the Lateralus album. It's a masterpiece in rhythmic time signature changes, beautiful lyrics talking about if you hold on to regret and resentment in life, it will consume you and as a bonus of the song, you get to heart Maynard scream for 25 seconds straight!!
You really need to do full listens to all of em Doug, they're like no other
Pure energy. Fantastic song!
this is my favourite album of theirs. forty six & 2 HAS to be the next one you listen to.
This is my favorite Tool song. No contest.
This album is their masterpiece, it really proved that they were operating at the highest level. IMO it's their best album, until Fear Inoculum.
Just got my tickets for one of the new Beat shows that was added. Gonna get to see Danny live out another dream and play some of the parts that inspired his style, along with 2 Zappa alums in Belew and Vai and one of the most amazing bass players in rock history Mr. Tony Levin. Recreating music from the 3 King Crimson albums that changed everything in music and inspired many of today's top musicians.
Try Rosetta Stoned.
For me, it was always from first to last and it's almost always how I listen to Tool to this day. The playlist expanded a couple of times since my first time and I hope it will keep expanding.
That's my favorite reaction you've ever done, Doug. That was great.
Probably my single favorite track by Tool. So glad you're doing this.
@9:40 - trying to learn that polyrhythm on the drums is what made me decide to give them up and stick to the guitar. It's not the hardest by any means but it was too much for my simple one-time signature at a time brain to handle.
Always been my fav
Bill Hicks is who Maynard is referring to buddy.
The raw emotion and power on Undertow had me reeling many years in my younger days. All of those songs are awesome. Dark but awesome. Even Opiate was raw and awesome. True head banging music. Not as technical musically, but their music mastery was taking form.
I actually think their old bassist, Paul, did this song and one other before he left. Undertow is my favorite record by these guys. The sound is so dark. There was something special when they were just a pissed off dropped-D rock band too.
respect the crap out of you doug. this reaction just reminded me of that. keep on keeping it real my good man. 🤜🤛
Oh! For a full album you are going to want to listen to Lataralus! Such a good album in its entirety! As a composer, I’m sure you will appreciate it.
This whole album is a must to listen to. After all these years Tool is pretty much all I listen to. Still completely satisfied.
Love your uninhibited enthousiastic and yet thoughtful reactions! My suggestion for a next video would be Flood, from the Undertow album. They have played this in their recent gigs, and if you love heavy bass, you’re gonna adore this one
A stoner work colleague introduced me to this album in the late 90’s. Particularly remember this track + 46 & 2 as it was NOTHING like I had heard musically before…or since! This album changed my life! 👊🏻
You may want to hear Stinkfist, HwaP, and Aenima. Beautiful work, Doug. Love your Tool reactions.
Such a killer album
damn i clicked so fast, Doug and one of my favourite songs
What an amazing reaction 😂 It’s so rare to see Doug almost at a loss for words
For me it's a tough decision on thee #1...but for me spiritually and mentally I needed Lateralus in my life in 2001, towers came down, we were on the brink of war, I had young babies, was questioning everything, and Lateralus landed like a warm hug......when this came out (Aenima) I was still a raging metalhead and loved the aggressiveness of the album...oh and album by album Danny Carey was showing the world in increments what we know now....beyond a drummer....the goat, all hail MJK!!!
GOOD TOOL 🔧
Stinkfist makes me headbang so hard at a certain spot in the song whenever I hear it live. It’s amazing.
I just found your content and I think you would absolutely adore the ULTRAKILL soundtrack
A couple songs I would recommend would be
Tenebre roso sangue (by keygen church)
The world looks red (heaven pierce her)
ORDER (heaven pierce her)
WAR (heaven pierce her)
Altars of apostasy (heaven pierce her)
Thank you in advance if you listen to any of these!
Thanks Dougy Fresh! Top 10 album across all genres for me
Todos sus discos y todas sus canciones están a otro nivel.
Para mi, la mejor banda del mundo.
What a day to release this
Lateralus is the way to go after listening to Aenima. They are such a good band
Yesyesyes😁
H. Was the track that made me a believer when I heard it back in '99.
Nice take my friend
He had a lot to say!
Lateralus would be fantastic.
brilliant song. I listened to this so many damn times back in the day. the way the start builds is just perfect. This album really deserves a full album listen through. it flows so brilliantly. not sure if you've explored any Perfect Circle. more Maynard briliantness.
