      I feel your pain. When I was a kid I happened to be at a shop that sold vintage gear and had always wanted to play vinyl. I literally knew nothing about it and paid a small fortune for it. Looking back I never had it set up properly, blew two sets of speakers..A drunk friend finally fell on the turntable and broke the arm. That's when I gave up and sold it all. I just now 10 or so years later randomly found a steal and did it right. lol

    As someone who's just diving into the world of vinyl this helped a great deal. I ended up getting a Sony PS-LX300 as a gift recently and with your help I managed to get everything up and running without any headaches. Thanks!

      How can I tell if I have active speakers? Yes, I know zero about this kind of stuff :)

    • @Ned-ke3ui
      @Ned-ke3ui 7 років тому +1

      I'm not being smart but it might say it on the actual speakers! If they're not you can buy a small amplifier and connect the turntable and the speakers to it! Active speakers are usually pretty expensive, the good ones are anyway!

    • @armanhanda
      @armanhanda 7 років тому +3

      13lindamarie active speakers have an inbuilt amplifier. they need their own power supply.
      passive speakers on the other hand do not have inbuilt amps and you need to use dedicated amps to amplify the sound before it hits the speakers. passives do not have a power supply!
      hope this helps!

      @gangstar662 7 років тому +1

      a pc doesn't have an amplifier on board but you are able to hear sound coming out of your pc speakers, why? because the are active. Every type of speaker you can hook up to a pc or with an aux jack to your phone is active.

      i know its been 11 months, and this seems to be an honest mistake, but for anyone reading this now, this is wrong. this turntable already has a pre-amp, if you get passive (not active) speakers then the extra component you actually need is an amplifier NOT a pre-amp

    • @razrv3lc
      @razrv3lc 5 років тому

      If your turntable has a preamp built in then you could get a set of powered speakers (which would generally be able to function as a receiver as well) and be good to go. A popular choice I've seen for starting out is something like the AudioTechnica LP120 connected to a set of active speakers. The turntable has a preamp and the speakers also operate as the receiver. As long as those four things are present, it'll work.

  • @databits
    @databits  11 років тому

    [turntable]--[phono preamp]--[speakers with aux in] is a fine configuration as well! If we're talking about this turntable, the configuration is [turntable w/phono preamp]--[speakers with aux in]

  • @samljer
    @samljer 9 років тому +3

    The answer is YES if you get PC Speakers with the proper amplifier built in.
    You even said it yourself, why say no?
    Its what I did, i used an RCA female to 2.5mm Female adapter and plugged the speakers right in.
    and you get all the best of the best if you dont use $30 speakers, get a nice set like i did, with all the bells
    the Corsair SP2500 comes to mind. (i use logitech z640)
    the answer is "depends", definitely not "no"

    You can't listen to an LP on the highway except if you're sitting outside the car on the shoulder. You'd need $5.00 worth of pennies to hold the tone arm in place.

  • @databits

    Yes. You can hook up the turntable to a receiver or any of the other devices shown WITHOUT THE GROUND. If the receiver has a ground connection, I recommend using it to avoid a loud HUM.

    You can connect your AT-LP60 to either of 3 inputs on your STR-KG700...the SA/CD-CD input, the TV or SAT inputs. Those are just ordinary audio inputs, so connect your AT-LP60 RED/White cables to one of the 3 and press the input button on your remote that matches that input. Make sure the AT-LP60 is set to LINE on the back.

    i bought a really cheap turntable, and i’ve noticed the sound isn’t as amazing as people say. does the quality of the turntable affect the sound quality/ bass? because the sound isn’t that bass-y i guess. new to vinyl.

    • @databits
      @databits  6 років тому +2

      Yeah, unfortunately a turntable's sound quality is directly affected by it's build quality. A cheap CD player can still rock the house, but a cheap turntable just turns music into noise.

    I just recently acquired a Sony PS-LX300USB (pretty much the same unit), cheap, from a pawn shop. Was mostly interested in trying some needle-drops. Only thing I'm not crazy about is the rather heavy tracking force. W/ a force gauge, I measured 3.78g. Quite a contrast to my Sony PS-LX520 linear-tracker, which measures in at about 1.2-1.5 (depending on which cartridge I use).

    Actually your CMT-CP11 (thanks for the link) has 2 audio inputs, they just aren't called AUX. You have an MD input and a VIDEO input. You can connect your turntable to either input and select the corresponding input button on the front of the unit. Good luck!

    Thanks for your question re: my AT-LP60 Turntable video! Yes, you will get fantastic quality from this record player. If you can afford a more expensive one, go for the Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB. It it built better and has more accurate speed control.

    Thanks for your comment about the AT-LP120 Wizard66!

  • @databits
    @databits  11 років тому

    @Brent: The outputs on the back are LINE outputs, meaning you can connect the turntable to an external amplifier, but not straight up speakers. Secondly, I would sell that thing and get an AT-LP60. That's one of those players that may ruin your records.

  • @Wizard66
    @Wizard66 11 років тому

    Go for broke and get the AT-LP1240. All metal construction, all cords are detachable. Stronger direct drive motor than the 120. While the pre-amp bulit in is decent, you will want to get a dedicated external pre-amp for better performance and sound quality. I came from an AT-LP50 which was similar to the AT-LP60. So be warned, you will want to tweak your analog setup once get get a more demanding TT. It got me :)

    I have to say, this video is amazing, but I have one question. If you plug the turntable into the car, wouldn't the car have to be stationary for the record to play without damage? Because if you drive, and you hit even the slightest bump, wouldn't the needle scratch the record? Please reply, I'm genuinely curious.

    I've been looking at the Technica AT-LP120. My receiver is a couple year old Marantz 1605 which does not have phono or aux inputs (bought it for all the HDMI connectivity) however there are analog audio in L and R for Cable/Sat, DVD, and CD. I could use one of those right? I would imagine that should also take care of the ground as well eh? Thanks for the video.
    I guess I never thought I'd be looking into getting a turntable these days so not having that on this Marantz when I bought it didn't matter much to me. But lo and behold, they are back with a vengeance!

    P.s. The RCA cable that goes from the record player to the phono box came with the player and is hardwired into the back of the record player, so I'm assuming that one is of pretty decent quality, and would be a nuisance to change, so it's really the cable from the phono box to the speakers i'm looking to replace. using a really old, crappy one I found laying around at the moment and seem to be having some issues with sound that is probably to do with that. Thanks again.

    @rreemigijus: 5 Pin plug might be a DIN plug, don't know for sure without seeing it. If it is, you'll connect that to an adapter first.

    Hi, I'm new to the audiophile community, I got a Crosley turntable with a built in preamp as a gift, but I haven't set it up yet, as I don't have any decent speakers. I do have however, a pair of AKG K44 headphones, they're pretty neat. The turntable has both left/right phono and aux inputs, so I want to connect my headphones to it, while I save money to get a proper receiver and speakers and stuff. My question is, would you recommend getting a headphone amplifier or do you reckon it would work well without it, just plugging my headphones directly into the RCA adapter? Thanks!!

      Pepe Delacruz I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I would sell the Crosley and use the funds to purchase a new Audio Technica or a used Technics turntable from Craigslist. If you decide against that, you will need a headphone amp with your Crosley. Welcome to the LP world!

    I'm not a big fan of Pyle brand products but that would definitely work to amplify your turntable.

    In the beginning of the video you say this TT cant connect directly to speakers, but if the speakers are active (powered) couldnt you hook them up directly? Just want to make sure. I was thinking about maybe doing this with a Behringer b208d active speaker if possible.

    I have it set to line. For television content, I set the receiver at about 30 DBs and it's loud. Had to push it to 9 or 8 to get comparable volume

    I just bought the AT-LP120 USB. I then got Bose SoundDock 3 as they assured me I could plug in and I'd get sound. Plugged turntable in - silence. I just want to be able to play my vinyl! Wishing I'd never got rid of my old 30 year old stereo system....

      +Jay Corgier - Any luck getting it to work? I believe you will need a pre-amp with that model turntable. The preamp goes between the turntable and the SoundDock 3.

      +databits It has a pre-amp built in but I fixed the problem. Original installation instructions said don't tighten cartridge! Once I discovered that the cartridge wasn't in properly the problem was resolved. Thanks.

    Well I tried connecting my Gemini Turntable (no built it preamp) to my PC speakers and it was very flat. I had to buck the volume in order to actually get a good listening sound. However when I hooked it up to my recently repaired receiver that has a preamp it was like the sound was 'restored' got back the bass and everything. I could also turn the volume up and down.

    Hi, there. Is there a way to connect it to the home theater system? I have Samsung HT-E6500W 5.1.
    And thank you for your video, I wish I saw it before I bought the turntable, I really didnt think its so difficult to get to the record playing/listening.

    Nothing atm I'm just getting into vinyl and such. I think I may purchase a Sherwood RX-4109 however. If you have any other suggestions for around that $100 dollar price tag I would love some other suggestions as I am rather new to this and a little confused. Thanks!

    Decades ago some cars like the older cadilacs had Record players that played 45's , we had one of those and also 8-Track tapes,.. there were record players that were made for cars but like i say mostly just 45's, these were under dash players, you can look them up and see what i am talking about,.. these had a suspended type chassis so if car was moving it wouldn't affect the player, but bumpy roads would still affect these some, now though they would be hard to find but some may still be around. and they were cool in the way they loaded the records and played them.

    Thanks for the video! I'm considering going with the AT- LP60 with USB capabilities. Is the only significant benefit that I could hook this up to my computer to download songs on my computer? Thanks!

    I just ordered this turntable. Since i'm on a budget I plan on using some computer speakers that I've had for many years. They aren't that great, but they are powered speakers. So what I take from this video is that I can plug the turntable (since it has a built in pre amp) directly into the powered speakers and produce a decent sound. Or do I still need an amp?

    • @databits
      @databits  10 років тому +1

      No, your scenario is fine. No other amps needed!

    @swimminghiggins: Unless the bookshelf stereo has a "phono" input, then no. You would still need a pre-amp.

    Personally, I would return it and use the budget on a used receiver made by Pioneer, Yamaha, Kenwood, Technics, etc. You will get much better sound quality than from a Pyle. Craigslist is a great place to look for one. Good luck!

    To connect the turntable to an ipod dock could you just use the rca to 3.5 mm male cable that comes with it and plug that into the line in input on the back of the ipod dock? Or do you need a separate 3.5 mm male to male cable? (as you showed in the video)
