  • This is a music demo showcasing the Pokey chip's capabilities, and the stereo implementation called Pokey/Gumby, where a second Pokey is added.
Eclipse day, the 8 version, is fantastic!

Now we just need a pokey upgrade for the Atari ST!

Awww! .. And I thought that the track called "One Step Beyond" was going to be the Atari 800xl version of the band "Madness's" song of the same name.

You had a fair chance. A LOT of Atari 8-bit demo tunes take inspiration from contemporary alternative, techno, house musix.

@@Technoid_Mutant Yeah I know. I was involved in the Amiga music demo scene back in the late 80's early 90's and enjoyed recreating known hit tracks on the Amiga systems. We also did some on the Atari ST platform too. Was good fun and good times, I miss those years.

@@EzeePosseTV My demo experience is primarily Atari 8-bit. I couldn't afford an Amiga or ST and didn't really need a new machine, so I just kept using the 8-bit and still do. Lots of Depeche Mode and stuff. I loved the songs before I realized they were ACTUAL songs.

@@Technoid_Mutant Lol, that's funny that you loved the songs before discovering they were actual songs. Love it! Yeah the Amiga and ST were quite expensive (around £300 - £400 quid) I was lucky and got my Amiga for nothing. Was given to me in "not working" condition for spares. I had a go at fixing it and found that solder joints were broken all around the hot spots on the mother board. A simple reflow fixed the issue and I got a free Amiga. I was using a Spectrum 128k and an Amstrad 464 prior. 8 Bit music on my Amstrad 464 did sound amazing asthe audio was in stereo and gave the sound more depth. But 8 Bit now puts me in nostalgia mode. I did a Depeche Mode song on the Amiga, Master and Servant using a few audio samples from the original song, lol

@@EzeePosseTV You can use Atari800 or Altirra to perfectly emulate the Atari on most modern hardware and operating systems. If you like, try the Veronika demo in emulation. Really really good. Another is "World of Wonders", which contains several really good tunez. Some you will probably recognize though I did not at the time, having never heard the Pet Shop Boy's or Depeche Mode 'version' prior to hearing the Atari demo versions.

Some of the PAL demos run too fast in NTSC. On real hardware you can swap out the NTSC ANTIC for a PAL one. In some cases, PAL demos require both the ANTIC and GTIA to be swapped out to run correctly. Some of my SAP conversions to .XEX need this swap too, as they can run too fast as well. I guess it depends on the tracker they use. Theta Tracker gives me problems.

My whole life has been listening to Pal Demos on NTSC machines. Its so much ingrained that playing them on a Pal machine sounds wrong, too slow. :-)

Same here. It took me most of my life to figure that chip swap out 😀

Running a Pal Antic with an NTSC GTIA actually works for the most part, but it is not a supported configuration by anyone. Strictly shade-tree mechanic realm.
