Exactly what I was looking for. I've done some interesting things with regular minwax ebony stain on a sanded hatchbox wood print (because it doesn't penetrate well, I've just dunked it in the tin overnight, wiped, dunked, wiped, repeat) and got a really cool weathered look, but it didn't look like wood. Got something on the pipeline that I wanted a more natural wood finish to, gonna try the gel/poly mix!

    Good information here!
I want to follow these steps exactly to get the finish you attained on the far right, the mohogany/walnut one, and on the large thign with text on it, that looks fantastic. Correct me if I'm wrong, you said you gave that one three coats of the 1:1 mix of gel stain and wipe on poly, but how long did you leave the coat on before wiping it off? Or did you not wipe it off and left the coats to dry fully before the next coat?

Thank you, this was a fantastic overview. I've recently got some hatchbox wood in and was stumped on how to properly finish it.
Oh, and I'd ignore the impatient jackass who commented previously. No idea why some people get so assmad over rambling, I found it to be very entertaining!

Great examples but long winded explanation. Needs a summary chart or something

Jesus christ write a script so I don't have to sit through 12 minutes of "Uhhh, um.. But." you could have summed this up in 2 minutes but you had no idea what you wanted to say.

You poor thing, I guess you should ask for a refund. Oh wait: you didn't pay anything and this guy spent a bunch days of his time running tests and sharing it with people for free to help them.
