Hello from Austria, very nice barn. could somebody translate (Englisch/ German) how the manure system is working ? Do you have a link for the used floor system in this video ?
Farmers family van Leeuwen - De Gier here in Stompwijk (Province Zuid-Holland, NL), have moved to a new location (700m further down the street) in 2017 and here start to operate their brand new cowshed (or barn), including parlour and means to produce a nice locally produced organic Cheese brand ('Wilde weide kaas': 'Wild Pasture Cheese' or so..) with a range of quite innovative features that comply with organic farming principles. Here they realized the new barn, shop (to market the dairy products they produce themselves), manure processing facility and more. The choices made by this farmers family are intrinsicaly not standard. For example, they opted for cow 'cubicles' so-called free-standing cubicles, say lightly and flexible demarcated resting places with lots of freedom that has and a thick and rather luxury mattress (you can see it at: 8:02) in the cubicle that is drained from wet and urine and has some straw in it as required in organic production method. These are particularly comfortable. Would be interesting to learn from their experience after three years. The floor is also innovative, it partly starts from kind a common (closed) floor types these days that intend to reduce (NH3) emissions, by directly separating the manure and the urine (where normally by combining the NH3 occurs). But has more, on top of the floor it also carries a soft layer and a protection sheet of about 1 centimeter thickness altogether that serve both the condition of cow claws and allows to drain the wet fraction, merely the urine from the solid fraction of manure and straw. to even make a better split between both and serve cow welfare at same time. The manure is pushed to one central discharge pit by means of a special manure scraper (automatic electrically powered and selfpropeling robot). There, extra straw is added to the manure and mixed and via a thick pipe pressed to another barn where this is composted and where heat generated during composting is used for heating water, needed in the cheese process. The urine is collected in another pit under the cowshed. This leaves the farmer with two types of manure which he can use in best manner, depending of the needs of his land. With less nitrogen loss via NH3 more nitrogen is left in the urine and manure and availble for enhancement of the fertility of the soil, as in organic farming no artificial fertilisers are allowed to be used. The choice of using this system comes from the list of requirements, one is that being able to make raw milks cheese, the hygienic condition for the cows in the cow shed need to be optimal. therefor, on need to create clean, dry and possibly light, that is what is aimed for with this floor, box and manure system. Further the philosophy to have cows outside the shed most of the time, which also limits chance for getting infections., Well designed. Look foorward to learn from their experience. This all in contrast to dairy cattle housing systems that apply full or partly straw beddings, deep bedding or compost bedding concepts. Hope the attempt here to translate the spoken text in the video helps a little? A very nice video and instruction on how decisions are made on this farm. Credits to them 👌👍
Right. today it's a major challenge to start a farm. Building from scratch is practically impossible. You should be lucky that your parents or family already have a farm, are in ag business one way or another. Further one need to have up-to-date knowledge and skills and information to make a start and have a very good and working ag business plan👍
In your country that isn't a problem I think, they start without any rules and law protection for animals, so buy a cow and start! Everywhere is a beginning and one cow is also a beginning, think little and economic and not big with guaranteed faillure. With beginning frm scratch you can't think big, you must think how is this economic to make money and that a cow pays his bills.
Thanks for all
mooi bedrijf
Mooi systeem
Benieuwd hoe dit nu loopt
wat een top bedrijf!
