Chrono Trigger has a great battle system, but yea, it's a bit confusing figuring out where you need to go next. (I need to finish it one of these days...)
Final Fantasy IX or VI are good turn-based games

Final Fantasy IX is a celebration of the first six FF games and one of my favorites and if you like it, I would recommend the Pixel Remasters of 1-6 because they have boosters you can use to tune your experience with the games.
Fire Emblem is a Tactical RPG series. Tactical and Strategy are two different things. Tactical rpgs are turn based and Strategy rpgs are real time or semi real time like Unicorn Overlord and Diofield Chronicles. But most people use them interchangeably which makes it confusing.

I think you will enjoy the Trials of Mana remake. It is on PS4/Switch and is an Action RPG, has quality of life features, and a unique character customization system.
There is also a new, upcoming Mana game titled Visions of Mana that comes out this Summer (official release date has not been announced).
If you end up liking these games I would recommend the Collection of Mana on Nintendo Switch. It’s a collection of the 1st 3 Mana games (including the original Trials of Mana).
As far as RPG UA-camrs I would recommend Lady Pelvic as she does a great job reviewing RPGs. She gives enough information to understand why she did or didn’t like the game without giving big spoilers.

Baldurs gate 3 is a crazy huge CRPG, meaning computer role playing game. What the genre means is a simulated "role-playing game" in tabletop style (dungeons and dragons but through a computer basically) theres a huge storytelling focus, stats are important, actual role playing through crazy varied solutions its turned based tactical gameplay that uses the dungeon and dragon ruleset. The best part is the game is so huge and varied and accounts for so many choices (choices actually matter in this game where something you do in hour 5 can wrap around and become relevant again in hour 200) and every story ive heard from people has been completely different. the writing is 10/10, the gameplay is 10/10. it actually feels like a "next-gen" game and how RPG's should strive to be.

For me it was Everquest the original. I was dreaming about that game. A few co-workers talked me into starting a character and I was playing it for like 2 years. The graphics were not great but the game play and story line was cool. After that, the Fallout Series. My all time favorite.

I'll say that although turn based RPGs never floated my boat, Action RPGs do grab my attention! Here are some of my favorites.
X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalpse (PS2/Xbox/GC/PC)
Marvel Ultimate Alliance (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)
    Nioh 2 (PS4, PS5, PC)

On the switch Tears of the Kingdom is a MUST! The story is great and the gameplay is on point. Also Red Dead Redemption on the switch is really good.
Final fantasy Remake was the FIRST final fantasy game I've ever playing and that was awesome!
Then you have the ARPGs like Diablo. Diablo 3 and Diablo 4 I really liked.
For Sci fi RPGs Outer Worlds and Fallout 4 and the Mass Effect Trilogy have great stories and combat. Fallout 4 is my favorite RPG of all time!
I haven't played sea od stars but here really good things about it. That is turned base too.

Phantasy Star IV back on Sega Genesis was the first RPG that really got me into the genre. After that FF7 was the final nail in the coffin. I've been hooked on RPGs ever since. I'm currently playing through Xenoblad Chronicles 3 right now. Also, to me RPG and JRPG are the same thing but each usually have their own quirks. ARPGs are typically a bit more fast paced and don't have turn based tactics or party mechanics.

Plus it'll make you ponder. It's called Ys 8. The controls are tight and you really can't get lost. You will love the characters as well. Hope this will be on your list.

Here's some advice. For the larger games that have large maps....play more linear RPGs and "build up" your tolerance to open world. Stuff like Final Fantasy XVI, Final Fantasy VII Remake are good steps into the open world RPGs. Once you feel like you have dipped your toes long and deep enough into the linear/semi open world games....take the plunge. If you feel lost, there is NOTHING WRONG WITH STICKING TO THE MAIN QUESTS. You DON'T have to accept every side quest, every request, every task that someone throws at you. Just enjoy the game. If you want to come back LATER and take on those quests, then do so! Remember, if it feels too daunting..just stick to the main scenario/quests. As you get more used to exploring and natural curiosity kicks in...then branch out at your comfort level. Also, take advantage of ANY navigation options they give you...cause hoofing it on foot can make things seem like they are dragging along too slow. If they give you a horse, fast travel...ANY of that, if you feel like you need to, USE EM! Hope all this helps!

You went down the RPG rabbit hole. I used to have an issue with the open world ones, but once I realized that those guys encourage exploration and you can move the story along at your own pace (most of the time, as long as it isn't a game with time sensitive quests) then I really began to enjoy those games.

I am not much of an RPG gamer but I do love a few that I've played during my 30 plus years of gaming. Examples: The only Final Fantasy I have ever played which is FF7 ( there is a physical edItion for the Switch that comes with FF8), another one is Dragon Quest VIII for the PS2 (I am a sucker for Akira Toriyama's art works). It sucks that one hasn't received a port beyond the PS2 but there is another Dragon Quest game out there on the Switch that I wanna try which is Dragon Quest XI S: Echos of an elusive Age Definitive Edition. I listen to the very specific things you say you like about RPG's and I am like that too so I think the latter would be something that people like us could enjoy since the visuals are gorgeous and the gameplay looks Hack and slash action oriented.

Yeah, the RPG genre has a lot of gems out there. Solid list of games you shared. Real dope seeing you’ve got Nier Automata on your next to play list. Because, yes, that game is very much indeed an absolute masterpiece and simply beautiful. And, if this JRPG route is what you’re taking, it’s a must you get some Final Fantasy in there. Those are some great blind dates. Xenoblade is incredible. I haven’t picked up the Definitive version on Switch yet but have Rocked the original on Wii now for many years. Octopath Traveler is amazing also and my kind of Rpg. I haven’t made it to Tales of Arise yet but do own most of the series. My personal favorite is Tales of Destiny 2 for the PS1. I love the Artstyle of the game and enjoy most everything about it. Fire Emblem 3 Hopes is great too. My neighbor and I have a weekly game night on Wednesdays and after we spent a little over a year completing the entire Metroid series, we started the Fire Emblem series and I tell you what, I highly recommend the two localized Gba titles. The Blazing Blade and Sacred Stones. The artstyle is timeless and looks great and the stories and character development is superb. You definitely have some good picks coming up also. So listening to what you grew up with, it sounds like we are pretty close in age. I was born in 84 and turn 40 at the end of this year and I am going to recommend my top 4 favorite Rpgs of all time. These are nostalgic picks but I love them and I believe they stand the test of time.
    4. The original Breath of Fire for the Super Nintendo - They rereleased the game on Gba as well as you can play it on the Snes online for Switch. The artstyle and Graphics Capcom did at the time was way above anything else. The music is great, the story and battles are great.
    3. Final Fantasy Tactics for the Original Playstation. They also rereleased for the PSP. This games music and artstyle is wonderful. The political story and various betrayals and friendships really hook you and bring you close to specific characters. The amount of customization was paramount for the time. I can’t recommend this enough.
    2. Lunar 2 Eternal Blue - I love this game so much, I have it in 3 formats. The original on Sega Cd, the first remastered release on the Sega Saturn Japanese Import, and finally the PS1. I have two copies for the PS1. Holy hot Damn. Game Arts and Working Designs made a Masterpiece. The music, the voice acting, the cutscenes, the story, the battles. If you are ever in the Austin Texas area, I’ll give you my spare copy just so you can experience this masterpiece.
    1. My favorite GAME OF ALL TIME: The original Lunar The Silver Star - Again, I have this on Sega Cd, the Import Saturn Mpeg version, and the PS1 complete version. The game also game out on PSP and I would love to get that one someday. It also came out in a very basic form for GBA but I wouldn’t go that route. This game literally gives me goosebumps during certain cutscenes and music from the game. It was a gift from my grandmother christmas of 99 when I was 15 and she passed 2 year later in 2001. This is the one game in my collection I would never get rid of. Every character in the game brings something to the table whether it is Kyle and Jessica making me laugh or Alex’s love for Luna and how far he will go to save her to bring the feels in. Also, how much Nash feels for Mia but won’t outright come out because of how shy he is about meanwhile being a cocky turkey when she isn’t around. Again, the Music, the story, the battles, the artstyle, and my god the voice acting. John Truit as Ghaleon is God Tier. I don’t care what anyone says, Ghaleon is my favorite Villain of any Rpg ever. Over Kefka, Sephiroth, Luca Blight etc. He is the misunderstood protagonist. He isn’t truly evil inside even though it definitely comes across as such in moments but just believes so strongly that things should be a certain way. Anyway, sorry for the long ramble but I have quite a bit of passion for these four I mentioned and hope you can experience them at some point.
Cheers and Piece out Queen G!

Hey Queen! Okay, I'm glad I stuck to the very end to see which platform you prefer. You seem to really like more action oriented RPGs so my suggestion to you is Y's 8 and 9. I think those will be perfect for you. Another suggestion is Persona 5 Royal. Now Persona is turn-based and a little dialog heavy BUT it's one of those games that sticks with you even after you've completed it. You'll feel such a connection with the characters. Lastly since you've played Octopath Traveler, I suggest picking up Octopath Traveler 2. From what I understand, it's better than the first game.

I grew up with the NES and SNES, but I think I went down the other path and was an RPG gamer/Fighting gamer growing up. I still played platformers, but RPGs were always my jam. Id love to give some suggestions for RPGs that are great to play. Though some of them might be different Genres, still great for exploring different types of games:
SNES - Final Fantasy 6 (3 US) or Chrono Trigger still hold up to this day. They are available on a multitude of systems, and FF6 got a pixel remaster that while not perfect, is still good for a someone new to the genre. It has options to make it a little more user friendly for a modern crowd. Earthbound is also a quirky classic, though you do have a big map and exploration.
PlayStation 2/PC - Disgaea is one of my all time favorite strategy RPG series that have a lot of humor, multiple endings, a streamlined story, and endless playability. There is a lot of these games in the series now but the first one still looks great, and has a wonderful story. Each game adds some new mechanics that add interest to keep it fresh.
Switch - Super Mario RPG Remake is a good ole school JRPG that will give you an updated look at a classic. If you are looking for an action RPG, Zelda a Link to the Past is a good option as well.
Most Handhelds have a good mix of old school RPGs that have held up well. Front Mission on the DS was one of my absolute favorite tactical RPGs that is a remake of an SNES game, and of course the Final Fantasy Tactics games are really good as well.

You may like star ocean games, and final fantasy tactics. I am currently playing persona 3 reloaded. I like it so far. It is kinda linear jrpg but chrono trigger is much different from chrono cross.

😢 Real sad that you won't be going to the old school PlayStation titles. Those games had more heart than today's RPGs.
    Current Recommendations:
Tales of Symphonia - fun with friends or family
    Dragon Quest XI
    Final Fantasy x
Old school recommendation: (I promise you'll enjoy the stories and gameplay)
Legend of Dragoon - a must play
    Breath of Fire 4
    Xenogears
    Final Fantasy 7

Atlus has some great RPGS in their catalog, Persona and Shin Megami Tensei are their mainline rpgs for good reason. Persona 5 Royal is the most recent from the Persona series and has an amazing gameplay loop. Persona series tend to have very intimate stories where cultivating social bonds with your party members and the npcs in the game have dramatic effect to the gameplay and story. Shin Megami Tensei 5 is the most recent in the SMT (Shin Megami Tensei) series. The story in this game takes a backseat a bit, whereas the gameplay is truly shines. SMT games tend to be harder in the beginning, but the difficulty tends to level out as you progress further. There is a new expansion of the game coming out in June that has both the original story and new story line playable from the beginning with 50 quality of life changes from the original making the experience much more richer.

But what you said may be true you might have to been a kid back then to like get that special feeling from it.... A blast from the past.

Really, It's just the Mass Effect Trilogy that was such a next level experience for me. Loved it. I don't think any other game series has had me so emotionally invested. I had to keep on replaying the end of ME2 to get the good result my team deserved lol. Otherwise, I felt like I let them down lol. (See how emotionally invested I was? LOL). Haven't played any other RPGs. I'm not sure 100 percent on what does and doesn't count as an RPG. I know there are the hardcore ones like Bethesda makes, but I haven't touched them yet.

Also, if you like these games like the ones you played like the "tales of" series, you can go back and play the other games. Try out Tales of Vesperia on the switch. Star Ocean is also similar to the tales of series. If you like octopath travel, you should try Live a Live. Girl, you just open up a huge ocean of new games for you to play. Never stop gaming, my girl. ;)

Oh man, let me be the first to say: welcome to the wide world of RPG's haha and I'm sorry for the hilariously long comment I am about to leave. I personally love them, they are a total blast and there are all kinds of them! RPG just stands for role playing game (duh, right?) and yes, you're right that JRPG stands for Japanese Role Playing Game. ARPG is Action RPG, and then there are RTS's, or Real Time Strategy games like your OG Fire Emblem games or Final Fantasy Tactics. Personally, I refer to these type games as Grid-Based RPG's because you literally move around the combat map on little squares. Also personally, these are my least favorite RPG's because I feel stuck or weighed down by the movement restrictions. In my experience, I would say JRPG's are lengthier games because some of them can be "grindy", which is to say, you go through lots and lots of battling monsters for incremental gains to character power, as well as heavier emphasis on story. ARPG's prioritize combat above all else (think Diablo-style games) but your character still levels up by defeating enemies and gaining experience or gear, and story length is just like any other RPG. RTS's are, in my opinion, the longest combat style games of the RPG's, usually having units fight each other one on one, with average length stories.
I would say, don't let perceived difficulty stop you from trying a game, there is zero shame in looking up a guide for the game if you are really getting into it. Old school games definitely have a different look and feel to them (Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and back) but if you enjoy Octopath Traveller, I think you'd be good with the visuals of those OG RPG's.
Trying to choose a favorite RPG is REALLY hard, and I agree that recommendations are equally hard, but in order to try, here goes:
    Breath of Fire II
    Lunar Legend
    Golden Sun
Legend of Dragoon (this is a PlayStation game FYI, it was just such a cool game for me personally)
    Super Mario RPG
Phew, that's long enough of a comment for now . . . hopefully that helps!
