- Hi there! HERE I SHOW YOU THE WAY I RESTORED A CARRYING CASE FOR SEWING MACHINE SINGER FERATHERWEIGHT 221
I am a Handy man that I Like to do my own fixes to my vehicles, fixes at home, I used to work with vintage Radio and TV and later I was rebuilding Vintage Sewing Machines and finally jumped in to the cell phone repairs which I do and do good
Today I want to share this video with you, I hope it helps, feel free to leave positive comments to help others and myself to get done things better
This video shows you how I do restore a carrying case for Sewing Machine Singer Featherweight 221. Every carrying case is different, they all have different grades of damage, some are missing hardware, missing pieces of wood, they have holes, or the fabric has been destroyed by bacteria but all of these problems can be fixed with some basic tools and lots of patience, let me clarify that I am not claiming perfection neither saying that I am a professional restorer, I am a humble person that I discovered the way to do this fixes without buying those expensive additives for restoration, and however the way I do I guess it's the easier and the most affordable for anyone trying to spend some time in taking care of an old Carrying case for the loved Singer Featherweight 221.
The process, if the case has that bad smell from being stored in a basement, there are many ways to get rid of it, what I do and works good is to wash the inside with a strong laundry detergent, use a brush not bared hands as there might be needles hiding under the fabric.
The water might damage the case but I can say the case it's already in bad shape and after you wash it, the case will show you the weak areas so you have to either disassembly the whole thing and re-glued it, because you don't want to clean the exterior and show off a nice carrying case but weak deep inside.
The next step is to leave it outside under the sunshine to get it totally dry
Once it's dry find the weak areas and re-glue them
But do not glue the fabric yet, the fabric must be inked and glued last
If missing wooden sections, these can be carefully removed from broken Carrying cases and adjust them to match the missing part.
If the fabric is damaged I carefully cut the sections of fabric from other old cases to match the case I am repairing
Once the carrying case feels sturdy go ahead and use any good brand of liquid shoe polish and apply it carefully once it's dry apply the polish shoe cream-like and buff it with a flannel or a cloth to make shine
Your Carrying case will get the look of a new carrying case

Good job EXCEPT don't use a steel wire wheel brush with a rotary tool for anything else except to remove rust or other corrosion. to light sand the metal parts use instead a brass brush head then finally the correct polishing heads.

Hi Andrea, thank you for asking, there is a secret that took me time to discover I use a popular brand of liquid polish shoes.
By the way, in the video I missed the first part where I wash the interior of the case with laundry detergent to kill bacteria that cause the bad smell, after it's dried I ink it.
Next time, clean the sink first; it's filthy.
What does the sink has to do with the restoration of anything?
