Yes, when we were in the death metal heydays in FL, Ampeg was only popular because it was a budget amp... But all these years later, people see videos of our favorite bands and assume they mustve been special amps... They were budget amps.. but i loved them back then and still love them today... Just not enough to pay the prices people have been charging as of late...
You mean you don't think they are worth more than $2000? 😂
The heyday of death metal... 2000 bought the guitar, amp and the van to carry it in! The best metal tone I had in the 90s was a digitech rp12 into my dad's fender 1x12 combo amp with a 200 dollar fender guitar! Not Florida but definitely Swedish carnage/entombed sound! I think the rp12 was set on nu metal but tweaked beyond recognition!!! Lol! I still have that rp12!
Just got a VH-140c 2x12 combo with vintage 30s from a guy in Panama City Beach for $400 🤣 If you live in Florida, you can still find guys that will sell you this stuff for cheap!
@@GrandCaravel 300 got me one today. Southern California
I think these "amp in a pedal" things are too cool. Between this one, the Victory Kraken, and some others, the future looks very promising for light-weight tours and shows!
I have the regular Fleshrot (V2) which I use into the front of an amp as a distortion. Sounds amazing for everything from classic metal to brutal death metal. Love it.
🥳
I have a Crate with the VH-140C lead distortion channel into 200-watts.
They sound nearly identical but I actually prefer the Crate Flexwave lead distortion over the Ampeg granted the Ampeg is a fair bit cleaner for shredding and arpeggios in the bass range.
*That also makes me an oddity since I greatly prefer solid-state over valves even with as many valve amps I own and love lol.* The boil down is simply that what I want from solid-state which is what EVERY valve player would want, *I will literally have to design from the ground up myself and just as obviously, build it with my own 2 hands!* Once I do that, nothing with or without tubes will be able to touch my work.
*I also just don't expect to be taken too seriously because it's solid-state, not even if I get it to the commercial market.* Our craft has been overwhelmed by gear snobbery because of huge credit lines given to virtually everyone by all the major music gear retailers lol.
Taylor thank you so much for all of your efforts in demonstrating these Solid State amps. The VH140C and SS-150 and SS-140C are my favorite amps / tone ever. I just think they have the best sound.
Shea took their preamp and made it better by adding the shift control 100%, the amp sounds like it has way more "girth" to it.
T.H.E. pedals are just awesome either way though. 🔥🔥🤘🏾🔥🔥
just get the ME EFFECTS martyr pedal! it is the most affordable and best option here for exact THAT death metal stuff, , its a marshall valvestate 8100 in pedal form which is the most iconic death metal amp for sure. thanks brother 🙏
Yoooo, have you heard of the new VHD SNK VH300 amp head? It's basically supposed to be a fleshed out VH140c style amp head and everything.
The reason why there were so many great ss amps back then (Randall, Ampeg, Crate, Peavey, Marshall Valvestate, etc.) is because NOS tubes were running low. A few years after the fall of the USSR, we started getting tubes from the former Eastern Bloc, and bands that had formerly used those solid-states had money to buy Mesa Boogies, Peavey 6505's, etc., so nobody wanted those transistor amps anymore. Now fast-forward a quarter-century...
Tomb Mold shout out is awesome. Pedal sounds gnarly as hell.
this guy nailed the tone when he made this pedal. I am getting ready to build a VH140 drive channel pedal from aion FX (DIY company).
Old School Florida Death Metal tone. I only have experience with Northern Alaskan Frost Bite tones, lol. Very cool amp and pedal, great review.
you can still get a Crate GX-130 for less than that pedal and it has the same circuit as the Ampeg VH-140c and sounds pretty much exactly the same.
i don`t think that i tell you anything new here but the old marshall valvestate 100H (8100) head is considered to be the most iconic death metal amp ever just because chuck schuldiner of the death metal band DEATH used it as his main amp and made it famous this way. this was my first amp and i have still two of these amazing (cheap) heads with matching cabs and will never sell them. there is also a pedal version of the 8100s preamp section called "martyr" by master effects. cheers 🎸🎸
It’s definitely NOT the most iconic lol chuck also used other amps as is well known. The vh140c and gx130 are THE iconic amps for death metal. 8100 is weaker crap like in flames and I do own one. But really don’t speak out of line like you did because you’re just going to get beat down by an actual metal head. I mean Christ id put $100 that you sound of crapserverwnce is the best death album and you don’t even know it was actually supposed to be a control denied album lmfao fuck chuck.
Not sure if you are aware of SNK pedals. SNK makes the VHD pedal ($225) which is just the dirty channel of the VH140c. He also makes a full two channel version (VH-Pre, $400) with clean and dirty channel, and he makes the VH300 which is a full version of the VH140c in a compact package capable of 300 watts (300 at 4 ohm, 150w at 8 ohm, 75w at 16 ohm). It’s spot on for the VH140c - it’s the only products he makes. The VH300 is $1000 though but lots of features that are great. I have the VHD pedal for a few years. It’s spot on.
I had the Ampeg VT-60 back in the day. I think it was my first tube map, moving up from the Randall RG-80. I remember missing the Randall and being sort of underwhelmed with the Ampeg (especially the B channel). ...but this is when I was young and broke and did not understand that overdrive pedals weren't just for wimps and old men. Anyways, great demo as usual from Taylor and This Heavy Earth continues to make kickass stuff that sounds amazing (and looks pretty sext, too!)
Definitely a big improvement over the amp. Sounds good man!
It's like 30 lbs. lighter too... lol
Sounds really good man! Always good to see more options for the VH140C tone. Some other great options are the Crate Tidalwave (not the Shockwave), VTX350H, VTX200S/SH, and RFX200. These are are all clones of the Ampeg with an added crunch channel and they can usually be found for actual realistic prices vs. the laughable prices that people ask for the VH.
Out of those clones which one is the one to have?
So SLM cloned its own amp? That’s kinda baller. Like the Mercury Sable vs. Ford Taurus of the solid state amp world.
@@TheJMan1K That's pretty much your call on which one works best. The 350 is the most powerful but it's mono only. The others are all stereo (100 X 2) so some of the built in effects (chorus, delay, etc) with sound a little cooler. The preamps are all the same though.
@@troyfrink Yep! They realized how popular the VH was and decided to just re-release it. Scott Hull from Pig Destroyer used the Tidalwave, basically the prototype for the VTX350H, for a while. He was the one who got confirmation from the designer that it was a VH clone.
@@low_e_music are the EQ the same?
I picked up a crate gt1200h halfstack for $200. Sounds awesome.
Sounds awesome. May have to get one. I did see a vh140 2x12 combo for sale a few months ago locally on CL but they wanted like 1k or more I forget. This is a lot more reasonably priced.
It's true.
Wish I still had my good ole vh140. Sold it for $200 broken like 10 years ago. The guy had a collection of these things. He swapped a couple parts and had it working. Added it to his stack of em.
wow that pedal/amp sounds fantastic.
Sick pedal! Love that it has a power amp built in! Hopefully someone will make something like this for the Crate gx130c, I’d buy it for sure 🤘
Uhhhh it’s been done kiddo
Uhhhhhh really?? Wow thanks mom@@aegisraven1284
To my ears, the Ampeg has more low end, and a different mid bump than the pedal. And the Ampeg has a bit of that "dirt" we are looking for.
With a bit of Eq and the right boost pedal in front, I'm pretty confident we can obtain the same result than with the amp.
I think the pedal is spot on. Volume difference is definitely gonna happen but that’s fine. Killer videos my dude!!
Thanks! 🥳
freakin love that Jackson
S A M E !
Surprisingly similar, thanks for the he comparsion. But how does it feel in the room between the 2. Hard to catch that feel in videos
They're both solid state, so there isn't much of a difference between them. The Fleshrot pedal seems to have less overhead which makes it a little more compressed, but not by much.
It amuses me that people only think of this as "the death metal amp." I bought one new and with a 32-band EQ in the loop, I played almost every kind of rock BUT death metal through it. No complaints from me or listeners, nothing but compliments from other players. Although one dude actually got pissed at me because he swore I was lying when I told him it was all solid state LOL
Anyway yes it's great for death but it's also far, far more versatile than folks might think.
Hell yes love the tomb mold shoutout. Probably my aoty so far, but i think their guitarist actually uses a bugera of all things lmao. The player makes the gear it seems. Anyway it so weird now how the vh140c clones are almost starting to seem as numerous as hm2 clones. I was lucky to cop mine for like a similar price to that pedal a cou9le years back right before all the hype seemed to hit
Clones galore came out when AionFX posted a schematic for DIY. I used the original Ampeg service schematic and was wicked bummed when I saw the schematics drop for a pedal version and knew it wasn’t long. That’s when I released v2 with all my mods.
I own one, its so awesome. Heavily recommend
I find the pedal sounds better a little more defined
Hmmmm might have to scoop one up 😊
Pedal sounds great !!! Very good option for me !!!
Miss my old vh140. Got her for 200$. Had a few issues but man did it sound amazing. Cant stand the prices now.
Marshall 8100 , Crate gx130. These are all amps i paid only like 100-250$ for. Now people want the moon for em. The SNK vhd intrigues me still.
Pretty awesome! Did he ever finish your Marshall origin 50 mod? Lol
No, I haven't seen my Marshall Origin 50 in over a year lol.
@@TaylorDanley oh no! Haha.
What is this pedal (brand and model) please. Many thanx
Sounds killer!!!!!!!!!
That Jackson though
I love your approach and creativity with riffing straight thug nasty…
Awesome.
Snk pedals makes an amp that is supposed to be a 1:1 clone of the ampeg vh140c. I think its about a grand for one.
also, sick riffs dude
The Fleshrot series is pretty rad. Can't go wrong if you like solid state brutality.
I know there's no tubes. Have you had any maintenance over the years on the vh140c?
It sounds so much like the crate g1500 head I used for many years and the stock sound was just awful. As soon as I used an overdrive in front that helped tighten the low end and shaped the mid section it was a beast!
G1500 is a beast!!! Tube screamer makes it so!!! I use mine on a daily basis! Red letter!
Dude this thing rips! WTF!🤩
You gotta demo one of the Fleshrot 200 mini heads
I will when he has one available.
Sounds very close to real thing. I'm going to have to look into it.
I preferred the amp over the pedal, the pedal gets close like 85% there
Why am I not able to find that pedal for sale? CMOOOON NOW....
Maybe Ibanez TN120 thermion some time?
Hah!! I use to have that exact same head back between '05-'06 when I was in my "Experimental Nu-Metal" Band of more than 5 yrs. Ran it through the old Steve Vai Carvin cab, I think what killed(not kidding) is when I started running my new(at that time) Line 6 Spider 2 2x10 combo through the Loop 😂😂. Let's just say over about a month of playing/Practicing 3 days a week, roughly (4) hrs a pop pretty much fried the board on the inside hahaha 🤣😂😅 we were all laughing as the volume slowly faded away lol
Was a great head not gonna lie, just lacked a of "Chunk" worth checking out mos def.
Had to share my little story buddy lol my apologies for the book 😂
What is this pedal called?
You know it's a brutally nasty tone when it comes equipped with the stank face! 🤘
😂
Sounds like early Internal Bleeding courtesy of my buddy Chris Pervelis.
The SNK VHD version blows this shit away
Dig itttt 🤘👹
Maybe try cleaning up the low end a little, it's pretty muddy and hard to make out the notes.
Hi what is brand and model of the pedal ?
This heavy earth. flesh rot 60
this pedal rrrrrrips! it manages to retain the same energy as the amp but it's also able to clean up a lot more without sacrificing any of the vibes?(I hate that i just used the word "vibes") but being able to introduce 2khz-4khz without it sounding harsh is great for a more modern sound? I dunno, i think it's a great alternative.
also, unrelated to the gear, but I typically play in various Drop tunings(drop c and drop g)... but watching your channel more n' more, i'm feeling compelled to try and play more in standard... and it's not as if i don't watch other guitarists on this platform who only play in drop... there's just something about your playing that intrigues me more than others? shrug.
I definitely get different results when I play drop vs standard. Most of that, I'm sure, has to do with not knowing music theory. Also, agree about the pedal.
And the winner is: The Ampeg!, but the pedal/amp sounds good.
The pedal is a class d amplifier and even though it's WAYYY more efficient than the tube head most of the time when class d amps are rated they say maximum power which means how much power they can push out for a short bursts. So basically the manufacturers lie about the power output. It's probably only 20 watts continuous power
That's a much better point than what I was going to say.
Mainly I was thinking about explaining it very basically then realized I had explained why bigger things are (generally) rated for higher Wattage which is a unit of power and power is Work over time and current is doing the work but electrical charge flow over time is current... And then I just said fuck it someone better can explain it with fewer words
Look into the difference between RMS power and Peak power.
The vh140c is solid state also though. I appreciate the insight!
@TaylorDanley it's still the same difference the ampeg is an older style power amp prob class a/b
@TaylorDanley there's not just tube and solid state amplifiers there's different classes, there's A, B, A/B, G, H, and class D
or you could just get a Crate gx130c combo for 150$ they are still out there guys.. its only the heads that are hard to get..
Think I’ll listen to some morbid angel now
Ask your friend which class d amp chip is in the pedal. Then you can look up the specs.
The ampeg manual says the power output is 70 watts rms at 8ohms.
If you’re talking about power scaling based on load impedance, you are correct with the 24VDC supply and full bore output, you’ll get 60W@4ohms, ~30W@8ohms, and ~15@16ohms. It’s a TPA3118 based power amp design I use in my Higher Power pedal amp (the left side artwork of this pedal).
The amp version of this that releases in a couple weeks is 200W@4ohm and again power scales as is the case with Class D power amps.
Hope that helps with what you’re asking.
@thiSHEAvyeartheffects yes that answers my question so the pedal is half the power of the ampeg. Do you guys put heatsinks or fans on your amps?
@@Durkhead yes heat is always a consideration of a power amp design but similar to ehx magnum and others of the style, High Power doesn’t require a fan but the the larger amps I do use a fan. But they are entirely different class d designs.
While I have a mint VH140c, I never call it a direct clone and my intent is to take the character of the VH140c, correct what I believe it needs, and then offer it in a preamp, bedroom amp, and gig worthy package sizes. I’ve been slow on development of somethings due to more order load and my day job but you’ll be able to see the full amp demo soon as I’ve been stress testing the production design this month.
@thiSHEAvyeartheffects the reason I was asking about the heatsink was I saw on your website that you were having problems with thermal shutdown.
I think the pedal sounds really good 👍. I'm also curious about the power cause I really like the way class d amps sound but I think they're getting a bad rap because manufacturers are over stating the power, for example the seymour duncan powerstage says it's 200 watts but in the specs it's says it will reach thermal shutdown at 140 and it's only 100 watts MAX at 8ohms so the actual continuous power is only about 60 watts
@@Durkhead actually not an issue. It was high end frequency content triggering the protection mode and this was solved or Taylor wouldn’t have been able to crank it how he did in the video without triggering. I removed that note from the product page. I have zero heat issues with the build.
To be honest the pedal felt a bit fizzy compared to the actual Amp
So the pedal is called... how? Sounds amazing tho lml
Fleshrot 60
Just buy a headrush pedalboard and get any tone you want 🤘🏼
Personally I wouldn't pay more than $400 for an amp that sounds like that. It's cool, but it's a one trick pony. I'd rather get an old peavey that has a cool sound and also functions as a pedal platform, gnome sain? Pedals like this are cool, but I don't think they're usually a good substitution.
All I hear is that fizz frequency it hurts my ears lol
Good ol death metal
The pedal sounds way better tbh
Because something is rare, or becoming rarer, or becoming vintage, doesn't make it greater. Unfortunately hypes make bad products greater, but that's very much a wrong mindset.
Hey Taylor, I don't want the amp, but could you sell your hair to me? It doesn't have to be from your head
The amp sounds way better.
My mom says you're welcome
Heavy earth is sold out
nah still too expensive.
Mooer GE150 + Mooer Baby Bomb = 300 bucks.
Amptweaker Tight metal pro....
NONE of these style pedals are available.
