- Lyndsey Haraguchi-Nakayama and her family have been hand-harvesting taro on their Kaua'i farm for over a hundred years.
As a fifth-generation taro farmer, Lyndsey sees her kuleana (responsibility) as providing food for the community - even if there are challenges outside of her control. When she is not harvesting taro, Lyndsey also runs Hanalei Taro & Juice Co., a lunch wagon that serves up taro burgers, taro hummus, and a coconut-taro dessert known as kulolo using the ingredients she harvests herself. She also helps educate the local community and visitors with ecotours on the farm and its on-site museum. Their family work ethic has prevailed across generations, and Lyndsey hopes to continue the hard work for generations to come.
Lyndsey’s family farm, Ho‘opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill & Taro Farm, is also a U.S. Fish & Wildlife refuge that protects native Hawaiian wildlife & plants. To see it in person, you can visit the farm via guided tours.

Absolutely stunning camerawork and beautiful narration by Lyndsey Haraguchi-Nakayama. Random thought: has the narrator ever considered adding voice over or audiobook work to her resume? Seems like she’d be a perfect fit for these spoken pieces of art. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful story of perseverance and determination over generations. I too loved the planted trees by the grandmother portion of the story. Sorry to see the unkind, and disparaging comments from some who don’t understand all that the Haraguchi and Nakayama families had to endure over many years to rebuild from some incredible setbacks. So glad to see this family farm succeeding despite all the storms from mother nature, and similar storms from people who show their ignorance and fear with torrents of ill conceived words. Thank you, Lyndsey, and all the Haraguchi-Nakayama and Haraguchi families for providing food to your community and the world. 🙏 We need more people like you spreading such wonderful messages and living your life in such positive ways. Since the stems are constantly being reused after removing the tops and bottoms they must be very old on a fifth generation farm. Any idea on how old the stems can be?

It's a Japanese coloniser this time too. Many Samoans have left to mainland united states, not ideal at all. Blame anti nationalist democrats keeping the borders open and becoming rich off building resorts over sacred Hawaiian ground. Nationalists (not nationalist socialists) believe Hawaii is for Hawaiians, and Hawaiian NATIVES should rule it's own lands and people. But Hawaiians, liberal whites, and Japanese keep voting democrat and destroying Polynesia for the profit of globalist elite. All people deserve their history and homeland. I am a kalo farmer it is not easy work i have asked many kanaka to come farm with me. Many say maybe but no one comes. I am sad everyone likes to eat kalo a few want to meakanu. Its nice to see a family malama the aina we are the stewards of the aina when we go home who will do the work after us. What we plant we share to who ever we can. Aloha keakua
