My father is not a Tool fan, or a metal head at all, but he loved this tune when I played it for him... I often visualise using this as his eulogy one day. Set as I am, in my ways and my arrogance....

"Difficult to see you in this light." I love the double meaning of that line. Difficult to physically see you in the lighting of this room, or atmosphere or what have you. But also difficult in an emotional and philosophical light. Seeing what was his mother in a new light. The new light of seeing her dead, the light of seeing her as a person no longer with him, the light of seeing her as someone relegated only now to the past. There's so much depth and meaning in just those couple lines. So rich and full of power. Some of his finest lyrical writing in that short phrase.

    • @cormyat07
      @cormyat07 3 роки тому +1

You're so right in the multiple meanings behind these lyrics. The guy just has a gift with making us feel so many different ways from just one line. Even before that line, "daylight dims leaving cold fluorescents." You could take that as the lights that hospitals have in having to visit her constantly seeing these low dimmed lights over and over as the daylight falls. It's just a masterpiece of writing and everything about it.

Kudos goes out to you my brotha', for provided a honest and genuine reaction to a "eulogy' of the utmost reverence and LOVE...Truth be told; this track is usually skipped by me(most times than not..), which is somewhat sacrilegious/blasphemous, as TOOL(and MAYNARD in particular, along with his other AMAZING emotional and sonic outlets: A Perfect Circle and Puscifer)HAS BEEN/IS AND WILL FOREVER BE; my cathartic obtainment...Because if I'm not writing/recording myself, I'm pursuing personal and interpersonal development and wisdom within their unequivically expressed emotion, both through the Unmatched playing and singing/songwriting that these 4 beautiful spirits manufacture together; as I play their albums from AENEMA forward; start to finish BUT these two tracks have me emotionally arrested EVERYTIME! simply put; these amazing human beings are as close to a or 'THE' "trinity" as I've ever felt: thus; THE Quad Trinity ;-). Thanks for the perspective and I'm interested and hopeful for what the entirety of this album and my new favorite record: FEAR INOCULUM, will envoke within you, SO until I watch your next thoughtful reaction; PEACE, LOVE AND GOOD HAPPINESS STUFF Buddy

So glad they are both still here on this planet, but both pushing 80 they are in the late phase of life and any day it might end. One day soon they will be gone and life will have to move on even though it might seem impossible. How Maynard and the boys were able to make this piece of art so real is incredible and only possible to make by going through it yourself. The thing is... you've still got the best half of the album lying ahead. The Pot is groovy, intense and very unique within the Tool catalogue; Lipan Conjuring + Lost Keys + Rosetta Stoned are so atmospheric, diverse and impactful they almost become overwhelming in the best possible way; and Intension + Right in two are just an unforgettable journey. If you liked Wings + 10KD, you better buckle up, there's still so much to discover.

His mother had a stroke and was paralyzed when he was 11, the song Jimmy is about him growing up while seeing her deal with her tribulations. she lived 10,000 days or about 27 years before her before passing. Maynard would of been 38 at the time. She did not like the subjects his music approached being a very devout Christian but from my understanding she attended a lot of their early concerts. She remained a steadfast Christian despite her church’s congregation judging her. They believed God was punishing her for some sin, that’s what he was referring to the “Collective Judas” aka hypocritical believers. Maynard didn’t keep to her beliefs growing up but respected them hence the religious imagery he uses.
    RIP Judith Marie Keenan
We thank you for your sacrifice and for all you have done to bring up Maynard. For you have touched all of our lived even through we have never met you. ❤️🕊

To me, these two songs are obviously about Maynard's Journey mourning over his beloved mother's struggle and death. As a non-religious person, this line gives me goosebumps. It'd be cool if heaven turns out to be real, but I have to see for myself before I live my life by a religion

as a non-religious person also - the "you were my witness, my eyes, my evidence" is so unbelievably accepting of someone else's choices. Saying how he still isn't religious, but seeing *how* his mother kept her faith all throughout/despite her paralysis was evidence enough, even to an atheist, that religion can help others get through life, even in the most unimaginably awful circumstances. He went from writing "Judith" to that line in just over 5 years which shows so much growth, and willingness to look beyond even your most entrenched beliefs in favour of something greater. Religion is most useful on a personal level, and Judith Marie Keenan was a shining example of that.
His most philosophically understanding lyric, for me. ❤✌

My opinion is that since she suffered for so long, and kept faithful throughout, she comes to the gates with fists clenched, and almost pissed off that she was given such a raw deal. Through Maynards lyrics (and his state of a nonbeliever) has him writing this as if she is demanding she be given her wings. No one deserves it more, and the fact that Maynard doesn't believe in the same stuff, has him writing this from a different mood as to how you would address your God.
I see her at the gates, demanding a reception that brings the Son, Father, and Spirit down to receive her and gift her her wings right upon entry. And to look God right in the eyes and demand nothing less.
This is definitely a tribute to his mother, but also as a nonbeliever, you can totally feel how Maynard is basically telling God he better fucking receive his mom and give her everything she deserves because her faith never faltered even though God was such an asshole to her.
This is Maynard telling his mom to walk right up to the gates and demand that God pay up.

I know every every transcription of the lyrics online says "This little light of mine a gift you passed onto me," but if you listen closely, I'm SURE he's saying "glitch." I don't see Maynard as thinking Christian faith is a gift. But it totally makes sense for him to consider the tiny inkling of faith he still holds from what his mother taught him as a mental glitch of sorts that he's using here one last time, letting that light shine a final time for the sake of his mother, hoping for her sake that what she believed was true and she's getting everything she deserved wherever she is now.

He’s more of a believer since his mother passed away, you can read it clearly on his puscifer and APC lyrics too.

All of this is open to interpretation but this is how I've conceived it, it is also important to point out that a lot of folks believe these two songs are actually part 3 and 4 of the "Maynards Mom saga" with Jimmy from the Aenima album being Part 1 and "Judith: from A perfect Circle being part 2, in the Judith song he is literally screaming at his mother for worshiping God/Christ...the actual lyric - "Fuck your God
, your Lord and your Christ, He did this to you", hence the religious over tones you're picking up on, in these two songs, separated intentionally he deals with two things, in Part 1 she is actually passing, it is open for interpretation again but the "difficult to see you in this light" the cold fluorescence is after she has passed and he's looking at her, could be the hospital room, could be the morgue, but she is definitely gone, and I believe that is signified by Danny's huge Boom at the end , perhaps the closing of a door, or even worse maybe a coffin, but she's gone, in Part 2, he is now telling her and hoping that this God that he has doubted is there for his mother, he tells her to go to the gates and demand her wings, he tells her to look her maker in the eyes and declare whom she is.......he has matured and accepted his mothers beliefs and labeled her a "pillar of faith", he is at peace with it, and believes she is in a better place, even if he has his fingers crossed....the man is a lyrical genius, and this band is next level....thanks for sharing this with us, as always these songs brought out strong emotions from me, thanks

This song makes me cry every time. Especially him saying he'll use his, "little light of mine, that you gave me, to guide you on your way home," "fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father," and "give me my wings!" Also, the very end. But the whole thing is so complex -- I hate the church that said you were wrong with God when you got paralyzed, but you have nothing but faith, even when you should abandon your Christ like he did you. Those assholes don't hold a candle to you and they'll be lost without you. And even though I have been nasty about your religion, you definitely passed your faith on to me and you have saved me (an awful unbeliever) and deserve to be sainted, and I'm here to advocate for you and send you on your way--meeting you, finally, where you need me to.

Just an amazing song. I've listened to this album at least 100 times and it brings emotions out every time. Excited to see you go through the rest of this album and then on to Fear Innoculum. Rosetta Stoned is probably my favorite Tool song. Any thoughts of maybe trying to jump into Rush when you are done with Tool? Not only the greatest drummer of all time but one of the best lyricists in Neil Peart. I'm 100% sure you would enjoy it.

This is one song that you have to read the lyrics as he sings. Not to do that is to do a huge disservice to the song.
