Tom Dempsey’s kick was probably why the NFL moved the goal posts back, and also change the rule that dealt with missed field goals. Before 1974, a missed field goal was treated the same as a punt (it had to be returned by the opposing team, not by the referees). Canada still has that rule, in that a missed field goal has to be returned. If it isn’t, a missed field goal or a punt that results in a touchback scores one point for the kicking team.
@@SonnyBubba Dempsey's kick had nothing to do with moving the goalposts back. It was a combination of a safety issue and to encourage more scoring. However the goalposts are still on the goal line in the CFL(I'm actually watching the CFL right now). One thing I liked with the Arena league was the netting. A ball of the netting was a live ball.
And so for the second time in team history, the Detroit Lions lose 19-17 on a walk off NFL-record-longest field goal. The first one was Tom Dempsey in 1970.
The league had discussions about this, and they decided to keep it at three points to prevent the office from deliberately moving themselves backward. You could make an argument for five points for a 30 yard or less field goal, because the offense got you so close.
I know this announcing crew will probably never happen but I want to see an announcing crew with Gus Johnson Andrew Catalan ian eagle and holly Rowe in my lifetime in a NFL broadcasting booth. Because that would be so much fun to watch.
Tucker's approach on his 66-yarder was more appropriate for a kickoff. I'm almost amazed that wasn't blocked, but many of these games have prescribed outcomes.
No the lions just assumed it would be a low arching kick so they decided to try blocking up the middle instead of the sides which they might’ve gotten because tucker definitely took a tiny extra step so he could crow hop it
Very good blocking up front as well. If those linemen didn't clog the lanes, that was 100% getting blocked. But yes, he took and extra step to get more power.
not so long ago a 50 yard kick was a big deal and 75% success rate was pro bowl. A 60 yard kick used to be for certain people and only indoor or in Denver. One day soon, we will see 70 yards
Teams should *always* return a short field goal. Always. The field goal squad is *not* the punting squad. Heck, two of the guys are the kicker and punter. The other nine are blockers. The odds are good for the return team.
One part with a 68-yard attempt was not a successful field goal by the Arizona Cardinals. Instead, the Jacksonville Jaguars made the longest touchdown run in NFL history by interception. The Baltimore Ravens is the actual team with the longest field goal in history.
Does anyone know who the last straight on kicker was, and what was his percentage of successful field goals ? I was thinking it may have been Mark Mosley for the Washington redskins ?
Of those 11, he only made 9 (which is good for 50+, don't get me wrong). But, did you know that of his 9 50+ makes, only one of them was over 56 yards, so don't expect a highlight reel.
It might be scripted for one team to barely make it intoo fiel goal range, but the kicker is still gonna make it. You cannot script some of those really close kicks where it hits the crossbar.

I had a 58-yarder in Germany 30 years ago ... in front of 30 visitors ... 😆
Justin Tucker did a modified kickoff approach. LOL Guess you kinda have to for a 66 yarder.
Strange how the lions loose to the longest game winning field goal for a second time in their history.
The first one is the only time I wanted the Patriots to win
9:26 the most Lions way to lose
3:18 why is the helmet logo like that bro
Why are almost all of these from 56 yards LOL
Tucker == Goat
I still have faith in the jags they just need minshu and better offense
Damn Cardinals
Was that a good day to be a jags fan or what?
68 yard punt?? That’s rookie number
We have another football genius here, folks.
One part with a 68-yard attempt was not a successful field goal by the Arizona Cardinals. Instead, the Jacksonville Jaguars made the longest touchdown run in NFL history by interception. The Baltimore Ravens is the actual team with the longest field goal in history.
10:17 am I watching soccer ball?
Justin Tucker☝
John Hanson kicked a 63yard for Osseo Senior high1969
he forgot the jason myers 61 yards against the rams...
Anyone else come here from the "new heights" podcast to see the TE's get destroyed? 😂
I've done a 76-yard field goal. Nobody ever talks about that. 😉
How did you do that you're only a chipmunk
@@kaleb3328 oh, I have my ways. 😂
Imagine losing a game to a TD field goal return lol
missed FG TD return? ask Alabama
Wow! Someone giving credit to kickers? I’ve never heard of that before!
This was not two month ago
2;30 why on 3rd down? with plenty of time???
Wrong timestamp?
@@FMSkyLoL 2:33
I just went and watched the recap of that game, it was 4th down but the graphic didnt update
Eliminate all field goals or make them only worth 2 points and you will have a great game !
One day you will sea a 70 yarder (in denver)
2:38 ig you deserve to miss since y’all are kicking it on 3rd down
These days you should get 4 Pts for 60 plus.
50 is a chip shot
Does anyone know who the last straight on kicker was, and what was his percentage of successful field goals ? I was thinking it may have been Mark Mosley for the Washington redskins ?
7:38 -- spoiler alert
Some of these weren't even close.
Hit the cross bar….. shit was 10 yards short
In practice, JT hit one at 70……no rushers…..
A lot of kickers could probably do that. especially without pads or helmets, kickers like Joey Slye could maybe hit a 75 yarder.
Wow
Bengals McPherson kicked like 11 over 50 and a few over 56 all you show is one miss? Homer
Of those 11, he only made 9 (which is good for 50+, don't get me wrong). But, did you know that of his 9 50+ makes, only one of them was over 56 yards, so don't expect a highlight reel.
Why Doesn’t it say longest field goal attempts? Showing missed field goals too.
Just showing the Ravens kickers highlights would be better
Justin Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens nailed a game-winning effort by kicking a field goal from 66 yards out!!! 🏈🏈🏈
Omg
Justin tucker has the best kick of the nfl
And that, boys and girls, is why we don’t kick 68 yard field goals
no shit sherlock j holmes
Scripted football, all outcomes are determined b4 the ball is snapped.
It might be scripted for one team to barely make it intoo fiel goal range, but the kicker is still gonna make it. You cannot script some of those really close kicks where it hits the crossbar.
Why are you showing misses??? change this title click bait
Because it's every field goal attempt
