No doubt. That ball was 15 feet over the crossbar. You wonder when these guys line up for 60y if they don’t think to themselves “let’s move it back 5 yards.”
My favorite kick is at 7:58 by Justin Tucker. His 61 yarder is the longest INDOOR field goal ever and it was at sea level. I watched this entire game and Tucker went 6 for 6 and scored all 18 points in the Ravens victory. I do believe it was the best game any kicker has ever had!!
huh? The average field goal kicker seems to be much worse. there would be 0% chance that 65 year old field goal pre season kicker would of been cut today like he was in 2002.
Tom Dempsey's 63 yd FG. is even more impressive when you find out that he had only half a foot on his kicking foot & had to wear a modified shoe & also he was a straight on kicker, unlike the soccer style kickers today,he didn't have very much run up room to kick the ball. very impressive!!
MSIdleon ...true, but it was 1970' I believe, couldnt get away with that shit now,but back then there probably wasn't a rule for it. Dude still only had half a foot!
When reporters would ask him if he thought it was unfair, he said, "Unfair, eh? How 'bout you try kickin' a 63 yard field goal to win it with 2 seconds left an' yer wearin' a square shoe, oh yeah, and no toes either." Additionally, when an analysis of his kick was carried out by ESPN Sport Science, it was found that his modified shoe had offered him no advantage - in fact, it was found that the smaller contact area could have reduced, not increased, the margin for error.
I saw Matt Bryant kick that 62 yarder back in 2006 to beat the Eagles 23-21. As a Tampa fan it was great at the time for the Bucs to win one even though at the time the Bucs moved to 2-4 with the win (also beating the Bengals earlier in October). The Bucs would end up finishing 4-12 with a couple more wins over the Redskins and the Browns so that kick was probably the highlight of the season though it also cost the Bucs a couple of slots in the draft order allowing Detroit to grab Calvin Johnson and the Browns to get Tackle great Joe Thomas while the Bucs drafted the late Gaines Adams out of Clemson.... Nice compilation of long kicks. Matt Bryant is still kicking in the NFL nailing them deep up in the ATL. Thanks for posting these.
I remember listening on WJR radio to the Lions vs Saints game. Dempsey's game winning, record breaking 63 yard field goal was so shocking, nobody thought he'd make it, but he did. It's tough being a lifelong Detroit Lions fan though we had Jason Hanson, one of the most reliable kickers in the game.
It may have been colder than that. I was on the 5th row clocking about 7-8 degrees at the half. 3 degrees by the end of the game. I couldn't feel below my knees at the end of the half and my cup of coke was already rock solid.
Dempsey was missing his toes on his kicking foot since he was kid so he had to kick like that. Mark Moseley of the Redskins was the last NFL kicker to use the straight ahead toe kick.
Rob Bironas did have a great game going 8 for 8 which has never been done(NFL record). 6 of them were chip shots averaging 27 yards and he had a 52 and a 43. Heres some more info about Bironas. He had an excellent NFL career, he was married to Terry Bradshaws daughter and unfortunately 6 months after the Tennessee Titans cut him he had a BAC of .21 and died in a car accident. I think Justin Tuckers game was a little better because he went 6 for 6 scoring all of the Ravens points. 3 of the FGs were over 50 yards including the game winner which was 61 yards(NFL record for Indoors).I still get goosebumps watching JTs gamewinner at 7:58!! Readers, lets take a poll: Whose game was better Bironas or Tucker??
I saw 4 of these in person. Elam, Janikowski, Prater, and that random guy who hit the long one in pre season. Props to the dude who did 61 @ sea level. Epic.
For those who think that it's not that big of a deal to kick those field goals" just go to your local high school and attempt to kick a 25 yarder" if you can make the 25 yarder just keep backing up 1 yard and only if you can make it on a regular basis from 50 yards will you stand a real chance of trying out for a team, the thing about trying out for a team they will expect you to be able to make it when a big defensive line is rushing to block your kick" but that's not quite the hardest part of it because even if you can make 50 yarders with a rush straight down the middle" they will expect you to be able to make it from almost any angle with a rush straight down the middle. I have to say something about Jack Dempsey who held the record for so many years" he had a wooden foot! Now that isn't the same as using your real foot.
while I agree with you about respect for kickers, your statement of kickers deciding (i'm guessing that's the word you meant to use) 75% of games is wildly over estimating.
Amen to that brother. I was punting the ball 65+ in high school at age 16 and could kick field goals from 40 inward. Then I got run over by a car and that pretty much ended that.
I was at the Miami Game when Carpenter hit the 60 yarder. I took my digital SLR camera with me and took 2, 5 picture burts.. It is one of the best pictures I have ever taken, you can see the ball leave the ground, sail through the air, and go through the uprights, when you look at the background, you can see the players on the Browns, heads move with ball in flight.
Joe Scarpati was the holder for Tom Dempsey’s 63 yard field goal. I remember reading a quote from him when I was a kid about that kick: “It sounded like a gun going off” Say what you want about the shoe Dempsey was wearing, he kicked that thing from his own 37 yard line...

Bla bla bla does anybody rember Steve little from Arkansas n Russell exrkslaben from Texas ? Those duds we're always kicking field goals every week from 63 64 65 yards away
the sad part is the NFL redefining the field by moving the hash marks in line with the goal posts. ever since that stupid change, all field goals are essentially straight ahead shots, also known as 'gimmes' the change destroyed the record books, as accuracy has skyrocketed, lacking the need to kick from an angle, and eliminating the 'one more play 'to locate the kick point, part of the game strategy, at one time. now it is always pretty much a straight kick. each of these kicks are impressive by distance, but every one of them is a straight kick, given the widest possible target, whereas, for example, Dempsey's kick was an angle, thus giving him a smaller window to kick through. the new record was straight, and thus a much wider target. the ability to kick for distance has always been around. kickoffs would routinely go through the end-zone, from the kicker's 40 yard line. (70 yards) but since the field was changed, the target is wider, and straight ahead. the challenge for the kicker was the angle and the more narrow target. The NFL has made all field goals 'chip shots' shortened the field, and made the game even more boring
It changes the angle at which the ball has to fly through the uprights. While the actual distance between posts never changes, when you change the angle at which you approach it, it changes how much of the target that you can see. It's much easier to look at this scenario in the college game with the hash marks wider than the field goal post at a shorter distances. At the ten yard line, when you are out at the hash marks, you realistically do have smaller target that you see due to the angling compared to if it was straight on. Another way to look at it is similar to target shooting. My friends and I went out shooting, we had a 10 inch target set up about 50 yards out. One of the shells knocked the target backwards at an angle. So now, while the actual size of the target has not changed, due to the target now being at a 40% angle instead of a 90% angle, the target is effectively smaller and harder to hit.
Tom Dempsey a handicapped place kicker booted a 63 yard FG in '72 for the Saints. Later on he went on the play for the Eagles and was one of the first union representative the football players ever had
I recall that the Lions were laughing and mocking Dempsey before the snap of his game-winning 63-yarder. Didn’t look like they were yukking it up afterward.
Dempsey’s kick is still amazing considering it was outdoors, cold heavy air and below sea level at the old Tulane Stadium. BTW, a 63-yard FG travels at least 189 feet through the air to make it across the goal post
As a former kicker I can appreciate these! People don't understand how hard this is. There have been a few that were 60ish that went through so far that if they'd attempted it far enough back, they coulda been 70 yards maybe! Its all about the situation and how badly they need one. If you got a good kicker youre better off trying a 65 yarder for the record than a hail mary especially if you got the wind on your side.
I was lucky (or unlucky) enough to have season tickets for the last 5 or so seasons that the Rams were in St. Louis. During the pre-game warm-ups Greg Zeurlein wanted to see how far he could make a field goal from. He made a 70 and a 72 hit off the crossbar. Too bad that Mark Prater, formerly of the Denver Broncos, is now all alone @ 64 yards.

I don't think that it was all about having the record to them....two greatly gifted athletes, that loved the game AND both competitive as hell!
Lol I thought Randall Cobb kicked the ball at 8:36
Back in the day they were all foot, they walked up str8 to it with like 2 steps and would barely put rheir body into it lol everything was more badass back in the day
How about a compilation of attempted Fair Catch Kicks?
Or the wind blowing the ball off the tee.
They would be equally exciting.
@Montana Roots or just people that would enjoy said videos coming from this channel, one they'd prefer to support. Isn't that deep.
1:44 Even the ref was excited, jumped up in the air on Dempsey's record
robert aguaeryo whatever his last name needs to take some notes on this video lol
You know a video is entertaining when you can watch a long highlight video of FGs from start to finish.
kickers are people too
Wow that “kick” ... “thunk” at 8:33 was amazing
