The ice or fire armor affixes are supposed to work like resistance to physical or magic, just only against that particular element, you can see your elemental resistances on your character screen, i think when you click view all stats or something like that
6:40 use these elemental damage buffs for whichever affixes correspond with your melee weapon. Also, fire damagr works good against the shrouded enemies, and shroud damage works good against virtually everything not in the shrouded areas
Agreed - that's a good point, though in general I think strength nodes (like intelligence) should be prioritized before picking more than one of the elemental nodes with a 10 % increase. The 20 % increases obviously makes picking the first 10 % elemental node early easily worth it.
That's true! Sorry, I didn't explain it very well - You throw it so you can sit down and get warmth at the same time for the rested buff. In any other scenario just holding it is fine :)

Even holding the torch would give you warmth. No need to throw it to the ground.
