  • Everything you need to know to ride the Subway in LA! Most people aren't even aware that Los Angeles has a subway, but it does! And it's a pretty good subway too! Well... provided it goes where you want to go. LA doesn't have a very large Subway network, but where it does run it is clean, efficient, and pretty cheap to ride.

    Why don't locals use the underground? There is so much traffic and traffic jams in LA which could be reduced by using the underground system.

    • @YellowProductions
      @YellowProductions  7 років тому +5

      +Tranefine Good question! :)

    • @ryanthemepark
      @ryanthemepark 7 років тому +65

      Tranefine there are a lot reasons why locals don't ride the Metro system. The biggest reason is the rail stations are not located near where most people live or work. So getting to a rail station requires riding a bus for the first and last leg of ones journey- assuming there is even a bus line near where one lives!. Also the buses and trains do not run all day and most bus lines have wildly infrequent schedules. Also buses are subject to LA traffic. Another big reason is LA is a very spread out city, so getting to ones destination will most likely take multiple time consuming transfers. Taking public transportation in LA will most of the time take 2-3 times longer than if you were to drive your car. Public transit in LA is great for short trips but awful for longer trips and given the spread out nature of LA, most people would be using Metro for longer trips which isn't worth the hassle of riding the metro.

      Sprawl is the reason. It's not feasible for govt how rich it might be to construct a metro to where people actually live when the density so little. Trams might be a right balance but LA is too big to travel using trams.

    As a non car drive living in LA for 3 decades, I agree ridriding train is easy because there are not many choices anyway. Transfer buses because there are not many anyway. Except Downtown LA, finding the bus stop n station is always easy because lack of choices
    I have came to downtown LA all the time, I always have trouble finding bus stop or train station. Funny the train system is very simple. I always catch train at union station.
    In your video, I notice there are no one in the train. I say it is very normal because LA does go anywhere
    I used to take goldline to Pasadena every weekend up till 2007. It was empty. Then I rode again in 2011 during weekdays, ok it was crowded.
    Red line is always crowd
    Blue line is crowd during rush hour. I rode 20 years ago during lunch time.
    I took Green oine to Downey's 6 years ago in the early morning. It was crowd, but everyone got seat n there were some empty seats.
    I took Expo on the first week. It was all empty.
    Just MTA proud said people can get seats because not many people take. RED LINE is different because you don't need CD bars once you get out Red oine stations.
    Most require cars.
    During rush hour, the train is pack. Even with that it is sardine fish crowd. I had to catch infrequent buses to take green line. For car drivers, by the they reach train station, they may as well driver further.
    Oh in La, there bus riders vs train riders. You don't hear that in Japan , Taiwan, Euope. Not even DC NY, SF.
    the reasons it is do inconvenience for non car drivers to catch trains. For example, Expo stopped at USC, Google map advice CD ed taking buses. I did additional research, its faster to take buses.
    Even people working along red line don't know about train. I got couple interview near red stations. The HR told me they don't parking. I said I take train. They didn't know it. 2 minutes later, they checked Google map n saidafter get out ssd's ts th in just walk couple hundred feet. Despite bad traffic in LA, people still drive n don't bother to figure the public transit.
    I end taking bus because it is easier.
    In La, never say you take bus during interview. You automatically disqualify job. Taking train is ok because people ass6 you have dars

    Just a suggestion, with the extensions of the Blue (A to Azuza} and Expo (E to Pasadena replacing the Gold line) line, opening of the Crenshaw -LAX(K) line last year and the opening of the Automatic People Mover which the K line will link up to next year, and the regional Connector, would you consider doing an updated series on the LA Metro system? Of course a large part of all of the extensions and opening pf new lines extc is due to the city gearing up for both the 2026 FIFA World cup and the 2028 Summer Olympic games? Just asking.

    • @YellowProductions
      @YellowProductions  4 роки тому

      Yes... you can transfer lines within 2 hours of first "tapping in" -- this is what LA metro's website says about it in more detail "To use the free two hour transfers, single fare riders will need to use a pre-loaded TAP card. When the card is tapped at the first boarding, the two hour transfer period begins and transfers will be allowed from one Metro line to another Metro line. Riders must still tap their cards at each subsequent boarding and the TAP card system will recognize if the user is within the two hour transfer window. Riders will be able to transfer an unlimited number of times from one Metro bus or rail line to another within the two hour time frame. For example, a passenger could transfer from the Metro Gold Line to the Metro Red Line and then to the Metro Expo Line all on one fare."

      You would go up a level if you're transferring from the red to the blue and down a level if you're transferring from the blue to the red. But pay close attention cause the purple line rides on the same track as the red line, they go in the same direction but they split eventually.

But the key is, you have to pick the right area to stay in..And there are PLENTY...Not just the down town area of the city...From what I understand, many more expansions and train lines are being constructed as we speak and in the next 5 to 10 years, MOST of the city will have access to trains....I cant help but to laugh at the morons that claim that "You NEED a Car to Live in LA"......These people either have never used public transit or are smoking that good sh*t

      Some of that has to do with how stations on the light rail segments are built. In some cases there are not enough room for turnstiles to be installed at some stations. :( Its crappy I know, instead we get police officers or metro security roaming stations checking fares

    • @roachtoasties
      @roachtoasties 6 років тому +4

      You might get lucky, but by the amount of times they check when security/fare inspectors scan your card, your luck will run out within a couple days. By then, the fine will be the equivalent of buying a several month unlimited pass, so the MTA wins. Also, the red and purple lines are totally enclosed with turnstiles, so unless you jump them, you do need a valid TAP card. All the other lines have most stations above ground. It's very easy to walk on board without a valid TAP card, but those trains have more fare inspectors.
