LAX FlyAway Bus: Ride to AND from Los Angeles Union Station

  • I rode the LAX FlyAway bus service from Los Angeles Airport out to Union Station, home of Amtrak and Metrolink and other transportation services. I paid with a virtual TAP card using Apple Pay on my iPhone, and the ride was pretty quick and easy. A couple weeks later, I did the same trip in reverse, this time at night. It was just as simple a ride, but the payment was much more confusing this time. So, this is what finding and riding the FlyAway bus was like for me, both ways. Plus, how to pay and how NOT to pay.

Here are some corrections: It does matter what terminal you tell the driver you're going to/checking in a bag. They pull out your bag from the luggage compartment based upon what airline/terminal you told them you're going to (they string a number to the bag). There's a possibility they'll skip your terminal if you tell them the wrong one and nobody else is going to that terminal. Paying is when you get to Union Station (or Van Nuys) and when leaving Union Station (or Van Nuys), and not at the airport. They somehow skipped you. That's very unlikely at Van Nuys as they check for payment as you go out the door to the bus boarding area. As far as relying on the driver picking you up from the airport that you're on the right bus (Union Station or Van Nuys) I wouldn't count on that. Read the display on front of the bus to be sure. I've seen passengers arriving at Van Nuys asking ("Is this Union Station?"). Other passengers shake their heads. They end up taking a taxi from Van Nuys to Union Station for not paying attention. Also, when picking up passengers from the terminals, don't count on the bus stopping at every terminal, especially during busy travel periods (like around Christmas). Some buses only pick up from certain terminals (like 1 - 3 or 4 - 7) and skip the rest. This is to prevent passengers being picked up from the South terminals from always being screwed because the bus is already filled up. As you can tell, I've done this a lot. Parking at Van Nuys for only $5 a day is a bargain, a relaxing bus ride, plus your car is more secure in Van Nuys than those large, open, long term lots at LAX.

This was really helpful and answered all the questions I have about this service. I booked a quick trip with my son to LA for a comedy festival downtown. Flying into LAX but out of Burbank which makes renting a car tricky. Since you have to jump on a shuttle bus anyway for car rental I figured we’ll give this flyaway bus a try to downtown, then Uber anywhere else we might want to go from there. It seems way more convenient than dealing with car rental chaos and even the long walks and premium fees for rideshare. Thank you for sharing this video! 100% helpful 👍

For next time, I recommend buying your ticket through their app or just paying with a credit card when you board/deboard at Union Station. Using stored value on your TAP card is only worth it if you have a large balance and/or your employer reimburses stored value you place on your card (my first employer in LA did that). It's the same amount of money, so it's better to just pay for it when asked rather than having unused balances on a transit account.

The departure time shown is from Terminal One, so other stops are later if you are boarding at a higher number terminal. The bus uses Sepulveda to I-105 to I-110 via the HOV and Express Lanes. From I-110 in downtown there are various routes that get used to Union Station but it is usually a short trip on US101 to the Patasouras Bus Plaza.

As someone who moved to Los Angeles from North Carolina 40-years ago this is why, I prefer to recommend the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Flyaway Bus service only for local residents. You were supposed to pay, your fare at the Kisok right in front of the Flyaway bus stop at Union station prior to boarding. Also, while you mentioned there were many city bus lines and Amtrack trains providing service from Union Station, there was no mention of all the excellent Light Rial and subway rail line passenger service at Union Station (smile...smile).

@@T1DWanderer Yes, what is strange is that the folks at the FlyAway terminal at Union Station didn't direct you to the kiosk for payment. That's where you pay traveling TO the airport. Only trips FROM the airport do you pay after the ride. The drivers have nothing to do with payment. Only the terminal at Union Station or Van Nuys.

Hard to imagine a major city airport like LAX not having a train to downtown LA with intermediate stops in Beverly Hills, Hollywood, etc. They can’t even operate a payment system for the bus in an efficient manner.

A people mover that will connect to a light rail line is currently under construction. Said light rail line will require a second transfer to go to downtown and a third to go to Hollywood. For Beverly Hills, there is a subway line also under construction to there, but it will open after the people mover does. The initial light rail line you would get on has a future planned connection direct to Hollywood, but that hasn't even had a route finalized yet, let alone have construction started.

    I have some corrections too.
This is NOT a quick and reliable service. I live in LA and have taken flyaway sometimes. This video is misleading. Taking the flyaway is a gamble. Maybe you may get a good experience if your lucky, maybe you will get a on bus right way and just maybe you’ll be lucky enough to get a nice driver.
Please READ the Yelp reviews because here you’ll get the real deal on what it’s like to ride or wait for the flyaway. There is feedback on van nuys and union station. Do this before you decide to take this bus.
First of all, they’re always lines and the bus is always full and the drivers don’t response like this lady in the video. A complete joke. Nice try.
I waited 2 hours for a bus. Two busses passed by with the drivers waiving and smiling. The buses had empty seats.
We finally got on a bus but the driver miscounted and we had to get off because there were no seats.
It’s a complete mess. There are always lines, people will crowd you and push their way to get on the bus. The drivers pick and choose who they want to get on the bus.
They pick up people they know first.
The schedule is completely false. The busses do not run according to that schedule.
The drivers are mean, I got yelled at twice because I asked a question. Drivers are completely unprofessional.
If you pay and don’t get on a bus they will not refund you.
If you’re at terminal 5,6,7 and flying in the evening be prepared to wait and get yelled at.
This service is a gamble. Sometimes you’ll get lucky and the bus will pull up. I do not recommend to people traveling here for the first time. Just take an Uber or Taxi.
