    The reason mma isn’t in the Olympics is because the Olympics usually last about two weeks, and each fight requires at least a week of resting and recovering since it’s so violent

      @voxathletica  5 місяців тому +20

      That's a fair point for sure, but that's why I mentioned the concept of compromise in the video. Like some sort of hybrid event which at least captures the spirit of MMA but can realistic be done in a couple of weeks. Maybe that's overly simplistic, but I think it could be cool

    • @gideonparry5684

      They could have a long qualifying period where only 8 qualify for each weight class and start before the opening ceremonies like soccer does. Only issue is that half the fighters would be 1 and done in the Olympics and eliminated before the opening ceremonies. They could make qualifying even tougher and only have 4 in the Olympics, that way if you get there you have a guaranteed 2 fights, semifinal and gold/bronze medal fight.

      @@gideonparry5684 Some good ideas in there, definitely a few different ways to do it, I gotta figure some sort of compromise can be made to make it happen

      @@voxathleticait's not so much the qualifying aspect or the loads of fights the athletes would have to endure in a short time, they pull that off with the other fighting sports, they can do it with MMA. What's holding it back, it that they do that with boxing by keeping to a strict amateurism standard with that sport. MMA, well, it's kinda tricky still to determine if MMA even has an amateur vs. professional delineation to them. Professionals won't compete and shouldn't, if they can make money doing what they're doing, they don't need to be getting beat up multiple times in a short span for nothing but glory, but established amateur MMA, is weak even in major countries still. I think it'll get there eventually, but it'll be awhile

      I don't think it's popular enough. And as for global interest, I think it fails there too. It's a team event which means each country can only field 1 team. How many countries do you legitimately think have a team for it already or plan on getting involved? A lot of sports in the list haven't gotten over the hurdle of international acceptance. You don't get into the Olympics without that first. There are other hurdles but that's like the first step

      @@0LLy796 I know that around 40 something countries have fielded a team and they come from almost all over, I know that Africa doesn’t have as much as others but I know Europe, Asia, north and South America have a decent amount of countries with teams so it’s not a small international community, it’s not a hard sport to get into and it’s growing fast, I think the first couple years would be dominated by the USA but other countries like Germany, Canada, Japan aren’t far behind. I agree that popularity is probably the biggest problem but I feel like it could appeal to a wider range of people than some sports that are currently in it.

I mean think about it, with all the board games on the market, Monopoly, Scattegories, charades, and many others, there's rules to how the players determine who wins, and rules help determine if someone cheated, etc. judging is just using a set criteria to discern one thing from another. While I agree that MMA 100% deserves an Olympic slot, there are substantial differences between pro MMA and the combat sports currently in the Olympics. Both Judo and Taekwondo are scored based on points systems, meaning that so long as you pull of a certain takedown or throw in Judo or as long as your foot makes sufficient contact with your opponent’s body or head in Taekwondo, you will get points for those actions. These moves don’t require you to injure your opponent in any significant way. They may hurt, but the intention usually isn’t to cripple your opponent. Even Olympic Boxing works on a points system in a similar manner and it includes the use of headgear to further limit injury. This is much different from pro Boxing bouts which take place over the course of 12 rounds while Olympic bouts take only three, and pro fighters are actively rewarded by the judges for injuring their opponent, landing power punches, showcasing strength and endurance, going for the KO, etc. The bloody nose and swollen eyes common in pro Boxing bouts are much less frequent in Olympic competitions. All this to say, MMA in its pro form would likely be too bloody and brutal for the sensibilities of the IOC and a general Olympic audience. The only way I see MMA getting into the Olympics is if they take an approach similar to what they do in Boxing and move to a points system that would limit the incentives for fighters to brutalize each other.

    • @voxathletica
      @voxathletica  2 місяці тому

      Yes I totally agree with you, MMA could/should get in but I think it will be like boxing in that it is substantially modified. Without a doubt, it's the brutality of the sport that the IOC objects to, so moderating that would be a necessary requirement. The question, to me at least, is whether the true fans of MMA would want to see their sport modified to such a degree, but I suppose that would be the compromise to make it an Olympic event

Others on this list are not anything interesting to me (except maybe kiteboarding). Ice tennis, snow volleyball, ice cross downhill, ice climbing in Winter, chariot racing (to have a reminder on antiquity), sumo, ultimate frisbee, American football and some even more modern pentathlon (that has motor racing instead of equestrian, mixed martial arts or paintball instead of fencing) in Summer could be interesting.

    With billiards, bowling and darts, it would be interesting to see other types of competition, besides highly physical sports.
    Regarding polo, the sport is in a weird spot, because 1) the cost is high (this was the main reason why it was discontinued) and 2) if there's a sport where one country dominates over the others is polo, and it's not even close. Argentine polo players are so good, that any list of best polo players would feature >90% Argentine players. Even more, as far as I know it's the only sport where its World Cup is limited in quality, i.e. teams must have less than certain goals of handicap (14 in the last edition IIRC, when Argentina itself has several players with 10 goals).
