What an amazing story - thank you both so much for sharing!!! I've seen evidence that this approach works. I had a roomie in Colorado a few years ago whose bf developed early onset MS symptoms(late 40's). He immediately started changing his processed food-based diet to a plant based/whole foods diet, along with coffee enemas daily, and his symptoms basically disappeared. Good luck with your crowdfunding and further research Dr. Wahls!!! : )

FoundMyFitness - I'd be curious as to why Dr. Terry Wahls removed eggs from her restructured diet (Minute 15:55). Dairy (milk) products and gluten-this I understand. I eat a lot of eggs, ones that are pasture raised on a small farm, hence my curiosity. Perhaps because the yokes are high in arachidonic acid, the Omega-6 source of the prostaglandin-prostacyclin-thromboxane-leukotrine cascades? Many thanks!

Rhonda, can I ask, did you do any research on the Wahls Protocol prior to this interview? Is there any evidence it works any better than a balanced, moderate and varied diet? Or have you assumed the Protocol means more micronutrients for most people so you're happy to promote it on your youtube channel?

    • @FoundMyFitness
      @FoundMyFitness  10 років тому +19

For the general public: I like that she champions micronutrients... how many people are getting 9 to 12 cups of vegetables per day? Additionally, how many people think they've got a "balanced, moderate, and varied diet" but in fact come nowhere near that?
That said... I think some of the other specifics of her protocol should be taken in the greater context of where they're coming from: her amazing personal story of her sorting out her own challenges specific to secondary progressive multiple sclerosis... and the growing body of evidence (in the form of the clinical trials she is conducting) that it *may* similarly help *some* or many sufferers of multiple sclerosis. Read my reply to murdockqotsa.
If you're not suffering from a neurodegenerative disease, but instead trying to pack on muscle... maybe you don't need to give up eggs, etc. I'd still suggest you consider massive doses of micronutrient rich vegetables, however. Long story short -- I think there's powerful lessons from her story that can also be generalized to a broader audience as well.

I guess we should avoid brown rice if we’re interested in protecting our mitochondria. It’s really high in arsenic. It makes me worry because I went through a phase that lasted about 4 or 5 months where I was eating 4 cups of brown rice per day. I was trying to eat plant based. Eek! Glad I learned about the arsenic! I think it might have contributed to the everyday fatigue i feel. Dr. Wahls has given me some good ideas to turn things around.

Is it 100 % sure that that the doctors are right it is pp, and it should hopefully be some chance of getting better in both cases ?
My left side is weak, especially arm/fooot/anckle, got drop foot. Got bad last year. Pain, risk of damagingg my foot, unstable, but walking also withot a cane (can walk fast w/w.o. cane, but with a "stiff" right foot - more pain in my back walking upright without cane/sticks). Strong left side (very un-even). Very much on my own, was very active till last year, wheelchair is for me NOT thinkable for the rest of my life.I want to follow dr. Wahls' diet(s) (always had problems with my stomach, so I am a bit sceptic about quitting dairy products bacteria)Want to have some hope, so I want to try as much as possible to try dr. Wahl's advice, even if difficult to change my life in such a short notice.

The specifics of Terry's diet should be taken within the specific context of her experience: addressing her disease of multiple sclerosis. Whereas it was obviously very effective for her, maybe the specifics are not something that should necessarily be 100% generalized to absolutely everyone.

    • @cockboy12

Dairy and gluten both cause inflammation in the body. If you have a low immune system as it is that little bit of added inflation can cause great damage to how your body repairs and heals itself. Many diseases and injuries are enhanced and harder to heal from inflation in the body. I cut out dairy over a year ago and feel much better. I also don't eat much gluten, for awhile I completely cut it out, but it's just too hard to me to eat enough without it. Also, I put turmeric in my smoothies as it's a very strong natural anti-inflammatory.

      cockboy12 www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21041810
The ATTICA study is a cross-sectional survey that enrolled 1514 men (18-87 years old) and 1528 women (18-89 years old) from the Attica region in Greece. Fasting blood samples were collected and dietary habits (including consumption of dairy products [i.e., milk, cheese, and yogurt]) were evaluated using a validated food frequency questionnaire.
      RESULTS:
We observed that C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels of individuals consuming between 11 and 14 servings of dairy products per week were almost 16%, 5%, and 12% lower, respectively, than in those consuming fewer than 8 servings (p < 0.05), while *those consuming more than 14 servings per week had 29%, 9%, and 20% lower levels of CRP, IL-6, and TNF-α*, respectively (p < 0.01), even after adjustments were made for age, gender, smoking, physical activity, body mass, dietary habits, and other potential confounders.
      CONCLUSION:
We identified an *inverse association between dairy products consumption and levels of various inflammatory markers* among healthy adults. Additional clinical trials are needed to refute or confirm our findings.

Eight trials that were conducted in overweight or obese adults were included in the review. The only study that had identified change in the inflammatory profile as its primary outcome measure showed that *dairy food consumption improved pro- and antiinflammatory biomarker concentrations compared with the low-dairy control diet. Three of the 7 studies in which inflammation was a secondary or undefined outcome showed improvement in key inflammatory biomarkers, ie, C-reactive protein, IL-6, or TNF-α after dairy product consumption*, whereas the other 4 studies showed no effect.

ahimsa matters The weight of the scientific evidence suggests that *dairy does not cause inflammation* (and in fact improves markers of inflammation), in most people. Having said that, I think it is important to remember that we are all "special snowflakes". :-)

The only thinner you have to monitor Vitamin K for is Warfarin (Coumadin). Don’t worry about the others, which work by different mechanisms.
And if you’re on Warfarin...you can increase your greens certainly, inform your prescribing Physician that you e chosen to do so, and just keep the number of servings per week consistent. ‘Consistency’ is in the written guidelines, but no volume limit. Warfarin is cheap, and can be dosed to accommodate higher Vitamin K intake. You’ll live longer and healthier by doing this. Also take 90-180 mcg daily average of Vitamin K2 meniquinone. It doesn’t affect blood thinners, but will prevent progression of many diseases. Thinners deplete you of this and the North American diet is largely void of it.
      Peace

paleo seems to always change and it's so random. basically, adopting a planted-based diet improved her condition. ten cups of greens a day is pretty much a plant-based diet. lol.

+Judi Brooks vegetarian is not really vegan. and who knows what she was eating as a vegetarian. obviously not many vegetables. also, imo, eating that much plant matter is plant-based. the micronutrients, antioxidants, etc. she is referring to are not in those organ meats. they are in plants. it's hard to get in so much other food when you're eating 10 cups of greens a day. let's get real here.

BodBot tries to do this. It's inherently hard to reduce everything down to math, though, when you're trying to take into account things like bioavailability of one source versus another. There's a lot of nuance when it comes to nutrition.
