Democritus delivers her BABY GUINEA PIGS - Minutes old ! | Recorded 1st July 2024 : Part Six

- Democritus has had a beautiful litter of THREE just a few minutes before I recorded this - it is a very quick video with a bit of commentary. Today - Monday 1st July 2024, Democritus has delivered. She actually had 4, sadly one didn't make it - but the remaining THREE are utterly awesome. She had her babies between 7am - 10am (I gave her cage a load of vegetables at 7am, and checked up on her at 10am !)
Part SIX of our SECOND video series on the pregnancy journey of our Guinea Pigs. These are planned Pregnancies.
For this series, we will be following our Females Democritus and Moondust - Dad of the litters will be Figaro. He was the Dad to the last litter that Democritus had earlier in 2024.
Guinea Pigs are Rodents and also are called Cavy's. Female Guinea Pigs are Sows and Male Guinea Pigs are Boars.
This is the sixth video - we introduced the three together on Sunday 7th April 2024. All have been weighed and we shall see how things progress. We weigh all our Guinea Pigs each Sunday.
We'll now leave Democritus alone for a few hours and later on, we'll weigh them all & her, and we'll take better photos.

We have had Guinea Pigs for many years as pets and our breeding is very low level and also very well planned indeed. We are well under our capacity and we also have lots of time for our pets. If you are thinking on breeding your Guinea Pigs, please ensure you have read up lots, watched lots of videos and also thought about it once again ! You have to consider that female Guinea Pigs can have litters of up to 6 babies.....where will they eventually go ?!?

I also speak at many local children's groups such as Cubs, Beavers, Brownies and Guides - discussing Animal Welfare to them in a clear, honest manner. These talks are very popular and the message of Animal Welfare is listened to - see the reviews on our Website.

Congratulations Democritus, you sweet little thing. She is looking good, Simon. When it comes to the realities of the natural world, Mother Nature has her own ways of dealing with things. Very often we never fully understand 'Why' seemingly bad things happen, all we can do is have a little faith.
I did not think she was due so soon, nice catch in getting them recorded so soon. How wonderful it will be to be able to watch the girls with their little ones.
Thank you so very much. Democritus is all good - that IS the main thing. You get used to noticing little signs and behaviours of the ones around 'mum to be' - so I was fairly sure at 10am, that something had happened.
I did think yesterday when I weighed her that there was a fair bit of movement within her, and quite defined youngsters inside. There is no precise science on guessing 'delivery dates' and 'how many' - but I got the numbers right - a total of 4. Three is good, the fourth was very big, so there was probably a reason why it didn't make it. In quite a few litters, one doesn't make it.
Luna is already 'helping out' - which is so sweet. We thought she might, and she has already helped out cleaning the youngsters.
Mother Nature is indeed amazing. I have taken some Shorts Videos and photos - all to be shown later today. Dad Figaro is obviously delighted....he's in with Moondust. The owner of Figaro is also delighted and has said that 'they all look good'....based on the photos she has seen.
We expect the three youngsters to have the same darker nose markings once the Californian genes start coming through !!!!

Thank you so much - we are delighted - absolutely delighted. Democritus is all good, Luna appears to be 'helping', Xenocrates isn't too bothered ! All three youngsters look to be active and ok, will take a proper look later today - all a decent size and mum Democritus is involved and healthy.
We'll do a Livestream on them 'possibly' on Thursday evening, as the weather then looks ok at the moment - none of the others will be out on the grass at all until then, as weather looks pretty rubbish !!!
As per usual, we'll wait until they are about 10-14 days old before we check males/females. Two females from this litter would be perfect. It appears as there is no black coat patches at all - which is surprising, as Dad Figaro has plenty of darker colours on him - but things can and will change in the coming weeks. We expect them to have the Californian markings as well in the coming weeks....very exciting and 100% delighted with these. Well done Democritus.

Awww thank you - Luna is VERY involved ! We thought she might be. I'm sure they will end up snoozing next to her.
Democritus is 100% fine with youngsters and is looking after them, and happily tolerating Luna's involvement. Xenocrates is gradually getting nearer, but isn't too fussed at the moment.
Teddies are awesome - and we will do a 'family photo' session with Figaro - probably at the weekend.
They all look lovely and we are pleased that we moved Democritus in with Xenocrates and Luna last Monday, they had a few days to settle and can now have at least the next 3 weeks all together, and any young males will be removed at around 21 days. All going well and they all appear healthy. They all look quite similar as well, so no immediate visual favourite.
