  • In this short seminar I go over in detail what I consider to be the most productive method for fishing in the Florida Keys patch reefs, trolling. I cover the basics & tactics of how, when, where and why trolling the patch reefs can be exciting, fun, challenging and ultra effective when it comes to getting into the bite with some of your most desired fish. I also give you the skinny on what are the best lures and gear to use when you head out to these reefs to do some shallow water trolling. Then we head out on the boat for some hands-on demonstrations of how great trolling the patch reefs can be.
    Making a trip to the keys and want to know about this great fishing zone that isn't miles from shore? or maybe you've lived there your whole life and never thought about this area as a treasure chest for anglers... Then this episode's definitely for you.
    Enjoy ;)
    Tight lines & good vibes.

    Interesting tactic, I mean I've definitely heard of trolling for reef pelagics like yellow jacks, cero mack, spanish mack, etc. But for mutton snapper, I would never think to do that, but you have definitely proven this technique can be productive.

      Thanks a million for watching and leaving some excellent feedback. It is crazy how it's possible to troll up mutton snapper. I'm really glad that I got a chance to get out onto the patch reefs and prove that this tactic works. Many people say I'm crazy for talking about it and how effective it is but the proof is in the pudding right here. Thanks again for your support of the channel I truly and sincerely appreciate it. Thanks a million for watching leave some great feedback. I'll have to consider the patreon account. Hadn't really even thought about it until you mentioned it. As this is my second job I can always use a little monetary help. Thanks for the great idea I'll have to look into it. Can't thank you enough for all your supportive channel over the years and always stopping by to watch and take out time from your life to chat with me. Couldn't get this done without your help along the way. Kind of excited to see what's going to happen with the Boca boat ramp when it is complete next march. But I can't say I'll move production back up north until probably the end of next year. I've got a lot to get accomplished and show down south. Thanks again for everything. Tight lines & take care ;)

    New Subscriber! Excellent video! Very informative and instructional on how to fish our waters down here in the upper Florida Keys. We have found a variety of shallow water lipped plugs like the Rapala does well in addition to the white buck tail jigs over the patch reefs throughout the fall and winter months. Keep up the great work! - Capt Dan

Always great to do some information sharing especially down in the keys. I've got a small arsenal of those shallow diving lures too hopefully I'll get a chance to put them to the test. Hi Heath, That looked like a fun day fishing. Avi caught some nice fish and he seems like he really enjoys fishing. Thanks for all the good information on the rods, reels, tackle. It really helps to have the right equipment. Also, the "No Fish" zones are important to know. Hope the family's well and say "Hi" to the "Fish Slayer" and the "Fishing Girls." Hope you have a good week and I'll talk to you on Thursday, Mickey

      Hi Mickey, thanks for stopping by and take your time out of your life watch enjoy the show. I love having to fish later on boat with me. He has his silly moments and then again when it's time to put the heat on he goes into overdrive. Florida keys can be a little tricky if you don't know a little bit about the protected areas and other regulations where you just can and can't go and what you can do. But once you have a good understanding of markers and buoys and what not it's not too bad. All the kids say "Hi Mickey". Everyone is doing good here had a couple of busy weekends of not going down to the keys but that'll change here soon, got to take care of responsibilities on the home front first. Thanks again for always supporting the channel and always writing my day by being here to chat with me. Hope all is well with you and your family. Talk to you Thursday. Take care :)

      Hi Alex. Thanks a million for taking out time to stop by and watch and leave some great feedback and a cool idea. I'm actually preparing to move somewhere in the next 6 months not very far away so I don't know if the man cave idea will work just quite yet. But you do have a point that I do need some sort of more enticing background. Thanks again for all your support it's always great to hear from you and chatting with you. Hope all is going well with your studies. Tight lines & take care ;)

    Nice video captain. I got my biggest grouper trolling shallow patchs on a spoon…

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  2 роки тому

      Thanks a million for watching and sharing your story. Them big grouper are super tough fighting and tricky to catch especially in the shallow reef beds. And they're even better eating at the dinner table. The light fishing gear makes it all that much more fun and sporting. Nothing like hooking it to a solid 24 to 30-in gag grouper in four or five feet of water. Thanks again for taking out time for your life to watch stop by and chat with me. I truly and sincerely appreciate it and all you've done for the channel. Couldn't have got this far without your help along the way. Tight lines & take care ;)

    Love the videos, always learning something new. How far do you troll your buck tail from the boat?

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  2 роки тому

      Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. I'm on the shallow reach like this I let my long line out about 75 ft in the Short line is out only about 50 ft just be on the whitewash of the boat. If you let your line out too far when the big fish hit they go straight for the rocks and that's when you lose them. Thanks again for taking out time for your life to support the channel and stop by and chat with me. Actually sincerely appreciate it couldn't have got this done about your help along the way. Fun trip! Great father & son day on the water too. Any suggestions on bucktail weight / size?

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  2 роки тому

      Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. For the bucktail jigs I wouldn't go any bigger than 3/4 Oz. At 1 oz they seem to stop hitting it. And yes it was a great day out with my son he's a beast. And a good luck charm we always seem to bring home dinner when he's on the boat. Thanks again for your supportive channel I truly and sincerely appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)

      Thanks a million for watching and noticing my nice little tripod for my camera. A few years back I broke it on a tiger shark. Then one day I was filming and I had acquired the second camera and I came up with an idea of it needing to be mobile yet how to utilize my extra rod holders. Thus the short rod selfie stick tripod was invented. I'm literally sitting here laughing trying to write this in all seriousness to you. At first I thought it was a silly idea but there have been a few times where I've headed out without it being there and things just aren't the same. Thanks again for all your support of the channel I truly sincerely appreciate everything you do. Couldn't get this done without your help along the way. Tight lines & take care ;)

    While I'm 99% sure I'll never get back to Florida (never say never huh?), after watching you snag those snappers a couple weeks ago trolling in shallow water I'm going to pay close attention to your tutorials as we have some similar topography around the islands here in Indonesia.

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing

      Thanks a million for watching and sharing and always being here to make my day better. I'd say if you have some sort of similar shallow reefs like that go for it. It might be different fish but predators do live on The reef in the bigger boys go after the trolled bait. Can't think enough for always taking out time for your life to stop by and chat with me and add value to the conversation. Truly and sincerely couldn't get this done without your help. If you do give it a shot I'd love to know what the results are. Thanks again for everything. Tight lines & take care ;)

    Going to Islamorada 1st week of June. Staying across the street from Robbie’s. Have a boat rented for the week. I plan to head offshore a time or 2 but very interested in patch reef fishing now. Any suggestions for the first week of June and would you use a steel leader with the Clark spoon? Appreciate any advice you could give thank you.

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  3 місяці тому

      Summertime patch reef fishing is tough. Lots of cudas. Yes Clark spoon with 40 lb wire leader. Out of islamorada... I'd head offshore looking for mahi... You've also got the humps out there that hold tons of pelagics.

    U launch from the state park ramp? It looks so hard to drive out of the marsh there.

    • @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
      @SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. The boat is currently docked behind a private residence so I don't launch from a ramp every time. And traveling through the Creeks to get out to the ocean isn't as bad as it may seem. I've been doing it since I was young however if you take the route a few times you learn it also your GPS shows you the way. You just have to be careful because there are some shallow parts out there. Thanks again for watching and taking out time from your life to stop by and chat with me. I truly appreciate it and your support for the channel. Thanks again. Tight lines & take care ;)
