    Removing a broken off spark plug from an engine is no easy task. If you get it wrong it can be a major setback that can cause serious damage to the cylinder. More than anything it requires a ton of patience. I try a common method of extraction on my CL350 today that I’ve seen work for others. No surprise this is the 13th video in the series.

    This video series features the complete restoration of a 1972 CL350 Honda Scrambler motorcycle. The videos should help anyone whether working on a cafe racer build or a full-on original restoration. I'm definitely not an expert so please refer to your manuals for proper disassembly and assembly instructions. Please leave comments if you have any questions. I'll be happy to help answer questions if I can confidently provide solutions. Again, I'm not a professional. This is my 2nd Honda motorcycle restoration and I'm learning every single day.     Try a 3/8 socket extension then a socket square. Heat the head with a gas torch to warm it.

    I have had one break off in a 16 year old car (GM V6 3.8) and am just starting on the "journey". Luckily (?) the engine blew the ceramic centre out of the plug when i was driving, so dont have to contend with the ceramic bits - but, these look to be original plugs. I have learned never to let spark plug replacement go longer than , say, 5 years. At least haul them out and treat the threads. Who needs this sort of aggravation?

      Certainly aggravating. Turned into a TON of work. Glad I did though as some of the rings were seized too

    Something I know about the extractors is you need to prep the stuck bolt by using the corresponding drill bit in the extractor kit. They pair the bit and the extractor to create the best chance of removal. Also a tap handle that's meant to receive a square drive like that might give you the best contact but you might need a real big one to get the torque required and it may not clear the fins in this case. I noticed you got them out in the end using a different method of course. Next time this happens try pre drilling it and then using the extractor (Sometimes called easyouts. I think it was a brand-name like Kleenex.) They're definitely not a perfect solution though so maybe predrilling wouldn't have made a difference in this case. Who knows. Loving these videos and the pace at which you go through things. Slow enough for someone new to follow.

      Tap handle! That’s exactly what I need. Thank you. I ended up getting pretty archaic with it in the end. You’ll see in a future video. Super frustrating. I have yet to use the extractor set successfully on anything. Lol There are a couple screws on the frame I’m hoping will be my first successes. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. I’ve been considering editing them more aggressively but I think you make a good point about the pacing. Much appreciated!

      @@KeepOnWrenching yea the tap handle is nice because you can apply downward pressure at the same time as you turn it without much fuss. The crescent wrenches usually open up on me like they did on you. Drilling out fully isn't the worst way to go to be honest. You can rethread and or put in a helicoil. Especially in that case where the spark plug threads aren't really taking any heavy load like a motor mount or fork mount or something. The extractors are definitely hit or miss though. The theory is there but they just don't always work. Especially small ones. I've definitely broken little ones off inside drilled out bolts. The heat is a good trick too. I've seen some pretty impressive videos with an oxy/acetylene torch. It always makes me nervous though because you're effectively heat treating the material and can do some damage to the structural integrity of it without seeing a visible different. That's why welds break just to the side of the weld rather than the weld itself. The area nearby gets heat treated poorly. Anyway. I think there's plenty of quick and dirty videos of people doing stuff without getting super deep into the details and sometimes that's all you need but the extra detail can be nice. And you can always fast forward when you get bored lol.

      Oh cool! Those torches are so fun. You can do so much with them. Happy to help. I've literally never worked on a motorcycle but I've been working on bicycles for years and some of the stuff is the same. No spoilers! I still don't know if you build the bike back up or part it out completely!

    Having the same problem on 2010 Er6n on cylinder 2. Today I will attempt with long bar.

      Good luck. These were a nightmare. Ended up having to carefully drill them out and rethread. Biggest issue I’ve had so far.

      @@KeepOnWrenching I have an impact 24V impact drill but still stuck. Even bought a flex adapter neck. Today is breaker bar day.

      Mystology LLC I’ll be doing a vid update on that soon. I had to get a replacement head on eBay. I tried to drill out and rethread but I’m not sold on the results. It was pretty frustrating.

      I think the only way I could have got them out is if I had a torch like acetylene. They were basically fused to the part so I’m not sure the torch would have worked. It’s created quite the rabbit hole!

      I never did, Bart. I cover some of the efforts in another video. Ended up having to drill both of them out and retap them with a rethreader kit. Part 29 in the playlist. I think it will work just fine. I do have an extra head I can use if I totally mucked it up. Those things wouldn't budge. Tried everything. Never seen anything like that before. Thanks for watching!

    you should use heat. The wd40 will not help in this. Buy a torch, and this will help loose the parts.

      I tried everything! Torch, cold, extractors, etc. they wouldn’t budge. Ended up drilling them out. It think it was somewhat successful but I did pick up another head just in case. Never seen anything like that. I think if I had an acetylene torch I may have had better luck. They were a mess!
