- In the 1980s, a retired lounge singer from Philadelphia made a strange foray into New York's public access TV scene. What resulted was one of the most bizarre and fascinating television programs ever produced; but as the years ticked on, this program almost became lost media. Let's take a look at the story behind Stairway to Stardom.

Hi, Ben Stiefel here - keyboard player for "All The King's Men" and composer of the "Stairway To Stardom" theme song (the disco one - there was a different theme song prior to 1983). Compliments to Captain KRB on an excellent documentary! Steve Luisi, who led our band and sang the theme song as well, called me and told me to watch this documentary. Steve told me it's amazing, and he was right! For Captain KRB, if you'd ever want to do a follow-up to this video and talk to either Steve Luisi or myself, let me know - we're always amazed at the longevity of Stairway To Stardom, and happy to share our experiences.
Omg I love the theme song, you did an amazing job! I hope you don't mind me asking but is there sheet music for the theme available by any chance? I would love to make a cover for it.
Hey Ben I hope you didn't throw your back out with that low slung keyboard of yours!

It is genuinely bamboozling to me that krb isn't promoted by youtube. This guy is seriously the most underrated entertainer I've ever encountered.
I know right? top quality!
Yes ✅
This is what UA-cam needs.
A random nobody's video being promoted on the frontpage. A dedicated slot that can rotate through the slog of unseen videos.
I cant believe this has not been recommended to me earlier. Ive been watching STS for years, and waiting for someone to talk about it. It started with me laughing at the performers, etc, but the more i watched, the more every episode just fills me with joy, and i cant make fun of them anymore. They gave everyone "their moment", and were kind, and supportive to them all. I wish talent shows like this still existed, with no one being mean, or 'judging' anyone. It was incredibly brave for every performer to give it a go, and every one of them should be proud. They have provided so many of us such wholesome, genuine entertainment, many years later. Thank you for this!!
I only was able to see PATV once at my moms friends house who had cable, it was a show with no speaking where a guy proceeded to cut apart a plastic life sized lobster which caught my attention and ended up making a sand cast mold out of it and smelting metal down and making a hood ornament or some shit… amazing I’ve never forgot about it and had me wanting to make something for 15 plus years haha.
Man, if there was content like this on the airwaves in the past, so ahead of their time and well put together; and that's out of the few shows that have some sort of archive, I wonder what other diamonds were buried in the sands of time forever lost..
Like tears in rain.
if you're interested, i watched this texan public access music request show the other day: ua-cam.com/video/rkDP0io2Pf0/v-deo.htmlsi=67lfWOPSZt9lrCa3
One of the things I like about UA-cam is that people on it covers things I’d never expect to see otherwise.
I came across this show about 6 months ago. At first I thought what crap. As I continued to get drawn into the acts I couldn't help but hope the entertainers do well with their talents. It takes a lot of guts to perform in front of people and a camera. Frank gave his best to showcase those that came out. You did a wonderful job of explaining how public access TV worked and the time and trouble people like Frank spent to make it happen.
Lucille Cataldo's Hairdresser is a legend on the internet.
The way I see it, stairway to stardom was early UA-cam content creators ahead of their time
Kind of impressive for people in that time
It's horrible that youtube isn't promoting great content like this, also this made me realise that America's Got Talent and other shows like it would not be anything without having judges or recognisable people you often see on the show. Basically, every show needs a vocal point the viewers can always expect to see once on screen, a cult of personality.

I maintain that public access tv is one of the most important inventions in world history
oh yea!!! krb upload!!! keep on climbing your stairway to stardom, my man!
I absolutely love your editing style and commentary!!!!
You should have at least 400k subs in this great channel mate
I remember hearing about the public access Dare Devil guy that recorded him breaking his neck after jumping off a tall makeshift diving board
thanks for treating the show and the folks involved with respect, unlike a more recent podcast. fascinating stuff.
Dude, I heard this show get smashed from audio nearly 16 years ago
Love your videos, and with this short foray you did into Public Access tv, you should do a whole series of Public Access shows.
Theres some very recognizable shows in the history, and I for one would love more of these kinds of deeper looks into them.
For one, Georgeous George show would be really interesting look.
13:40 Joey Marlowe looks like he's found the final boss "chicken" dance from Arrested Development
i cant believe i missed this! Another krb banger as always
