  • From the mythical creatures of the lumberwoods to the CIA's most unhinged projects; from the tech behind toy laser guns to the history of an ill-fated game company; from the archaic origins of copypasta to the mysterious creations of an internet musician; over this last year, I've explored a small handful of unusual stories and events in a variety of places. And now, they're all in one place, plus some bonus segments and bumpers made by you guys!
Hope you've all enjoyed this season, a new one's right around the corner. : )

Are you in the states? Because in Ireland for example, if I sold my house which is right beside a mediaeval castle, you would have to pay for archaeology studies before you could change a single brick. We're not even allowed to metal detect in your own garden. If you find anything (like I uncovered a cobbled road in my yard) you have to call it in. I was advised not to uncover anymore and certainly not to dig underneath as so not to disturb the archaeology. 🇮🇪👍😊

    • @mohawkmaster5728

@@SmilerORocker In the states, we're required to call in any archaeological finds also, but sometimes if the company doing the did will lose money for not being able to dig there anymore or if the spot is too good to give up, chances are they just won't report it and hide it away. If they get caught they get a hefty fine, but if not then they'll just get away with it cause there's no way to know otherwise

Note about 7:54 : The hoop snake also occurs in scandinavian folklore, in the form of a lindorm( lit baswood snake). It is usually considred a dragon but it shares the hoop snake characteristic of rolling into a hopp and rolling.

The Raygun Conspiracy got me right in the childhood. The 8-sound pattern played and I was transported to 1994, 6 years old pointing a shiny laser raygun at my little cousin in the dusty driveway of my grandparents' farm.

As an electronic technician I imagine the 556 timer being used for the laser gun was probably the first. The 556 is a dual version of the 555 timer. Basically this chip is capable of creating various frequency waveforms such as Square wave sine wave triangle wave depending on the components in the circuit. I imagine layering two different frequencies together with a 556 would be capable of generating some of those sounds. I'm surprised to hear that an off the shelf chip was used for these sounds that are so familiar from my childhood. One device I remember having as a kid was a keychain sized device with a watch battery that made all of these sounds.

    • @stdorn
      @stdorn 10 місяців тому +5

I imagine many of these sounds were chosen simply because of the fact that they were able to be created simply with a dual oscillator circuit. So essentially someone probably put together a 556 circuit on a breadboard connected to a speaker and change components until they found a sound that they liked. After a sound effect was discovered that was liked you knew exactly what component values to use in order to recreate the sounds. This sounds probably became iconic enough that when companies decided to manufacture microchips to specifically make sounds for these toys that they simply replicated the sounds we were already used to with the 556 circuitry.

She was also apparently an unusually superstitious person in general and was prone to unusual worries. And looking into it people still to this day occasionally report seeing hoop snakes.
So I'm pretty sure she was serious, and a tad odd.

I love the vintage tech shots you use; I like to collect obscure and obsolete electronics and I've always wanted to set up the same sort of sets you use when zooming in and out of an old TV screen, for example. There's a charm to things like old Zenith televisions from the 80s or CRT monitors from the 90s and early 00s, similar to vaporwave's audio aesthetic and I'm so glad you use these shots, even if they're basically just filler, because it lets me look at these kooky old machines in a beautiful set.

Is the sidehill gouger an American folklore thing? We have had the same in France for centuries (le dahut). During the grape harvesting time, at night, when everyone is fairly mellowed, the seniors will send the young gullible ones to hunt the dahut in the vineyard. "Chasser le dahut" (hunting the dahut) means going on a wild goose chase.

  • @WK-47

As a Scot, I have to wonder if the gouger was at least partly inspired by the haggis. In our folklore, it's a small mammal with one side of its body having longer legs, letting it walk effortlessly on hillsides, as it's said to inhabit hilly wild areas. If it ended up on flat terrain, it'd walk in circles because of this... so, essentially the gouger.
Of course, this is just a more appealing explanation for the source of haggis, which is sheep offal (organs and other innards ground into mince - sounds disgusting, but depending on who you ask, it's actually delicious and one of the few British dishes with any flavour). We still get a kick out of insisting to foreigners that haggises are real albeit rare native animals, and you'd be surprised how many people believe it.

The Blockbuster segment reminded me of another opportunity I told someone about and they unfortunately didn't do anything about. A friend of mine's Dad came into a somewhat large sum of money and he bought a quite large library of video tapes. He opened a store to sell the tapes, my friend worked there and one night I was hanging out waiting for Mike to finish his day and we were going to party somewhere. At that time there were no rental places anywhere in the Denver area and the idea of it hit me as a way to a large fortune. I told Mike and his Dad about it. They both thought selling what they had, buying more and selling them was a far better idea. Needless to say in less than six months the store was closed and a rental place bought the remaining videos they had.

The laser sounds almost had me thinking they were ripped from arcades, coulda sworn a couple were from Space Invaders and Galaga.

I wouldn't be surprised if is someone mentioned it in the Fearsome Critters ep's comments, but the "furred trout" is probably based on a real-life phenomenon. Fish can fall victim to fungal skin infections where the fungus grows as white, hair-like strands that five the appearance of fur. It's absolutely possible for a fish to be fully covered in such an infection-- though it wouldn't likely live long from there.

It was a taxidermy joke. It's so cold in Minnesota that even the fish grow fur.

By the way, the "Dawn is your Enemy extended" creepypasta is actually pretty good. It goes into lots of simple horrifying imagery without being as needlessly gratuitous as contemporaries, and I like the description of the sun rising over the duration of the broadcast, culminating in it winking at the viewer. That is an unforgettable image and certainly makes this story stand out.

1:22:38 I actually own a copy of Quake II on the n64 that still has it's blockbuster sticker and barcode on it. One of my prized posessions ngl. I grew up WAY after the blockbuster era but it still gives me a sense of cool nostalgia lmao
