You may want to re-think about the toe kick. I left a few inches at the bottom of our railing so I can sweep snow off the deck. I realize the toe kick will keep the toys from falling down but after a few trips up-n-down I think they will be more careful with thier toys on the deck. Just a thought -
Cledus T Judd "Willie's got a big deck" 😂
Those long over hanging boards for some reason remind me of the antique cartoons where the guy is cutting a limb and is on the wrong side of the cut.... I'm so glad you were on the deck side of the cut....😊 Great Build... Great Kids...Great Dogo...
Not only is that railing system not gonna block your view of the mountains, but from the bottom it won't block the view from the bottom being able to see your home as well! Wrong hole, no problem! LMAO too funny!
GOOD JOB PUTTING THE RUBBER MATERIAL ON TOP OF THE DECK JOISTS!!!
You should add a board on edge under the top rail. It won’t be long and that rail will look like a sway back horse. 😏
Howdy yall, suggestion to keep the deck clear of snow & ice is geothermal loops underground with Glycol through a loop system under deck boards. I have seen this system to keep driveways clear. You can even use a passive solar collector to do this or even electric. Your average ground temperature 6' deep is 55 degrees and by pumping Glycol through the tubes and controls to turn on the pump when temperature & moisture is just right, turn it on /off. If you run these tubes through a heat pump, you can maintain a 75 degree to 80 degree deck.
I don't have enough land for Geothermal system, so I use a Ryobi Expand-it blower & snow thrower. Trent & Allie have a self propelled snow blower on their deck all winter.
Good morning you guys hope you guys have a wonderful day keep up the good work just be careful out there it's kind of wet and slippery at least you guys in your house now at least where's washing machine and God bless you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Man Nick,& Jen, your deck is looking AMAZING!!!.... Sincerely, the old Montana cowboy,
Frank Scherping😅
I'm not trying to be "one of those" but just something to consider on the toe kick idea. Think about how the deck is going to drain or how you would push snow off before you put the toe kick on. Just a suggestion. As far as the rest of the project goes you two have done a fantastic job in the time frame you have been up against. With all you have accomplished and getting moved in I say "well done sir" 👍👍🙌👏💪💪
My father was a wood worker in his spare time. I can't stress to you enough the weakness of toe nailing. Never a good idea. It's only meant to hold something in place until you can really firm it up. Please consider bolts or screws through the tops of the railing. You can always finish them up with doweling to cover the bolts. That's an awful long way down so be absolutely sure the railing is rock solid. Looks great.
Our county doesn’t allow those wires because it can be used like a ladder, you can also put some hog wire in front of it if you don’t feel safe with it
Guess I'm going to be "1 of those", too...love the railing that gives some security, but is see thru...I would absolutely NOT put a toe kick. I live in NE Washington...bunches of snow...wraparound deck that goes 2/3's around the house. Me and my shovel would not make it removing snow if there was a toe kick! Plus, I wouldn't want a barrier where water, snow, and ice back up and sit by that wood toe kick. I've raised 3 kids...they are capable of learning...several trips up and down those stairs retrieving toys (some of them ruined and broken) will teach them about taking care. 😉
I try not to grin when y'all get naughty, but impossible...stay real you 2...love it! 😊
Looking great guys! ❤
Looking Awesome. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Once you get all that lumber down and the cables in get some sealer on it as soon as possible. Also, figure out a way to get the sealer into the holes where the cables pass through.Water will get in there and cause the posts to rot from the inside. Plan on resealing it every year. Including the posts! Our sealed redwood deck we did lasted about 15 years. When we rebuilt it we used a composite, .and it looks new after 10 years.
That’s the plan for sure. We already have the sealer on hand.
One cable is no good two is so so. Three is better four is great. More than that just makes it safer. I love the cable system. Remember to check the tension every spring. It looks great.
Charlie is a good boy and those kitties are so cute climbing upstairs to see y'all
Good morning from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The railing system is looking really nice. 🇺🇸
You 2 are doing so well. I admire your work ethic. You may want to consider a gate at the top of the stairs. If the children are fooling around near the front door, you don't want them tumbling down the steps. Keep up the good work. I look forward to your videos.
Just a piece of advice, make sure that you always wear knee protection. I’ve been working on my knees for 45 years and it is now taking its toll always take care of your knees.
You are the best to watch! Great personalities together❤!
Soooo beautiful ❤🎉😊❤🎉😊
Going morning the deck look great
Love the design of your deck!
that crimping tool you can use for batter terminals to crimp brass fittings on to batter cables for when you do your solar.
Hi Nick. A couple of suggestions for you.. Have you thought about hog wire fencing for deck web that goes in between the pists.. also I seen this on Treehouse Master where they put in a elevator to lift up supplies... The basket size was 3' long by 2' wide and they used a electric Wench to raise and lower it.. something to thing about.. Thanks
The PROGRESS has been A+ I give you 2 thumbs up 👍🏼😁👍🏼. Don’t know what you’re gonna stain or treat the deck with but I’m sure you probably know this already. But I’d suggest pressure washing off any soaked in mud from traveling up and down during your construction. Because if you just sweep 🧹 it and don’t pressure wash it first before you stain or treat it you’ll have darker spots where the mud soaked in to the wood. Just a tip from been there done that & was pissed I didn’t 😂
Good job looking like you will beat the big Snow
Hi looking fantastic well done ❤❤xx😊😊
I wouldn’t of done it lol though I guess you could of put a small board down to run your saw down for a straight edge :-). On those edges. I have always enjoyed building decks. The cables wasn’t thought of in my day. I do like the concept. Well looks like you have some cable pulling to do :-).
Sending good vibes all the way.. for y'all. Happy Horizons, Regards from Singapore, GOD BLESS.
Love the cables. Great job Nick. Just a question please. Where will the holes go on the front corner post towards the house, if there are already cables going through? Maybe you could have gone straight through to the house's side? On the other hand you are very creative so you may already have a better idea??😂 We have faith in your creativity.🎉
Nice job couple!!!👍👍💪💪
That deck and railing look awesome!! Love the look of the railing!!! So natural and much safer!!
Good job guys i look forward to your videos every week and have my wife watching now too. "What would you do if I did that" lmao too funny 😂
😂
It all looks so good! So proud of you two 😘♥️
You guys are doing a fantastic job! Can't wait to see the finished job! Congrats!
Love the look of the Muzata cable railing. I have a project in the spring that I will be using their stuff on.
Congrats on the deck project progress in cold weather. Looking great.
The cable system looks awesome.
Great job! I'll be glad for you guys when all the decking, railings and stair railings are done. Makes me nervous 😃
Great work “Air Force” and very great and well behaved young ‘uns’ and pets too!
Lookin good,and you both.
I can’t believe you put the siding on the back burner. That Everbuilt may not survive a winter storm.
Love following youre videos, how many people get the Inuendoes that you 2 do?😁Decks looking great, great that you did it at an angle instead of straight on. Bet when you do the otherside the Sun will come around the front just to wind you up,🤣😁Took a while for you to go crazy lady Jen, Love it when you do. Thanks for the videos and sharing youre life, Love from a Cold (2 Deg C) UK ,forecast Snow, 2 days to December.. x x x
Está ficando maravilhoso
Looks so good. Looks so easy to install. Thanks for showing us.
Thanks for watching!
Looks wonderful.Hi from Colorado Springs 😀
Very very nice guy's!
I love the decking and how it’s looking, yep another amazing job ❤️💙❤️💙
Wrong hole no problem 😂. Looks good
Looking good ❤❤
Awesome!
You are doing a great jog
That's a really cool way for the railing! The city where I live was after me they said the spacing between my cross rails was too wide. And I am on the second floor and if I use more wood to narrow the spacing it would block a good view from my deck. Thanks Muzata for the great idea 🤓🤓
Very cool!
Heat gun before tape and after you place it that’s what I had todo
Love the look of the wire. Great job, Nick and Jen ur home is coming together ❤️🇨🇦
Thanks so much!
Yeah, Nick, you put it in the wrong hole 🕳 and see what happens 😉 😂!! Love the rails it's come out very nice!!
😂
Love it. It looks so good.🎉🎉
Small kids will climb horizontal cables.... just a thought
Just interested... Are you going to build a roof over the decking by the door sometime so there's no snow?
So cool!
Hi guys, watching from Australia here. Loving the railing look.
Can’t wait for your next video.
Will you’s be giving a tour of inside when you’s have everything in place ?
I just luvvv your hilarious humour talking about the wrong holes, Nick behave, go look after your lovely Jen 🤣🤣
We love joking around with each other. 😂 Thank you.
@@lifeelevatedoffgrid
My husband & I do too sometimes. I say it’s great for a relationship..
Keep it up 😁
Love your project. Best regards from Oslo, Norway.
Love it ❤
Sweet you guys are pleasure to watch. Keep up the good work that deck will be done soon
Amazing job 😊
Dude! You rocked that deck and railing. Way to go. Looks so amazing. Nice!
Great job on the deck guys! Nick, you could see the improvement on your cuts around the posts. Having the decking run on a 45° made those cuts all the more challenging and you pulled it off. Suggestion for when you cutting the excess at the outer edge - keep the wide base of your saw inboard on the deck, it'll give you more control and a straighter line. When you were cutting, the weight of the saw was resting on the waste and as the saw cut through it would tend to tilt downward.
Thanks for the tips!
Cool shoes man
Very cool fencing cable! I love it. You guys have some great promoters🎉
Well now damn fine Job n all with the deck and rail i would like it 🎉 just the kitties could be a problem but they will soon learn not to be near the edge
Love the deck and railing! You are doing an amazing job as usual.
Thank you very much!
The decking is looking beautiful
You guys are bad ass. Just wow!
Thank you Tills!
Great job guys you are a joy to watch keep up the good work.
You guys are doing amazing work! Loving the progress and the videos.
Decking & railing look Awesome! Thanks for sharing
The deck and railing look so good. You guys have worked so hard on all this. Cool video 👍❤
I gotta echo other comments re: the railing toekick. Consider leaving a gap for water/melting snow drainage. Be nice to figure out a method to slide the toe kick in place so you could remove it and slide snow off the deck, but it needs to be strong for safety. I think you have done a terrific job on your apartment build. I'm a recent subscriber so this may be a moot question...are you planning on building a house and the apartment is just temp living space (like The "Good Simple Living" family)?
Again great job and youtube series...thx for sharing your homestead journey!
Yes that is the eventual plan.
Look out below 😂. Looking fantastic!!! Awesome you are doing the 45 degree thing. So glad you are attaching the posts properly!!! Perplexed by using untreated wood but I bet it's because of your arid climate there.
🇰🇷 응원합니다
Genial
I've been watching your videos since I subscribed and it's starting to take shape. Looking good guys👍👍
❤
What a gorgeous design of the apartment and the deck. You chose the hard way to lay out the boards but it looks AMAZING. What is the load rating on that cable? Seems so much smaller than other cables I've seen. I also have that intense fear of heights. Even just watching the video I can feel that invisible *pull* trying to pull me off the edge. But once the board was nailed in...it reduced, but still there. LOL the cable doesn't make it go away...For my deck I put mosquito screen/roof and metal fabric fencing to ease my neurosis. :) Can't wait to see how you tie in the other side.
you are doing a great job keep up the good work and it might be cold there but over here in Yorkshire England it is _3 here
I WOULD SUGGEST LEAVING THOSE EDGE BOARD LONG FOR A COUPLE WEEKS, WHEN THE SUN DRYS THOSE BOARD THEY WILL SHRINK AND UR STRAIGHT LINE WILL BE JAGGED
The wood is kiln dried. All the shrinkage should already be done… says google anyway.
@@lifeelevatedoffgrid OK
Ii do have a question, what’s the black tape for? I figure keeping water from under the slats. The decks I have took apart I don’t remember that being a problem 🤔. That tape is expensive 😮.
So you basically built a ladder for small children to climb on. IDK if that's what I'd use that far off the ground
Well kids could climb anything if they want to. What would you put up for railing?
@@johndibert5509 kids can climb vertical steel wire? I just wouldn't have placed them horizontally. Heck maybe even use glass panels but that would sketch me out as well.
You showed how to connect one end but how do you connect & tighten the other end?
That sure is cool, the power of the cordless drill to drive those screws in without a pilot hole! Is that the same cable system that Trent and Allie use? Mike in Oregon
I’m not sure if T&A used those cables.
What kind of cheese do you want with your wine.
👍
If that’s not treated, wood that’ll be good burning?
I would have thought twice about putting cable system on railing especially with kids. That is quite a drop if they fall off. Just saying!
👍👌👍✌️🙏❤️
👍👍✌️
why not build a roof over deck were door is so snow cant drop from roof as kids come out of the door or going down stairs i know others have done it
That’s on the list to do at some point.
💪💪💪💪💪♥️♥️♥️♥️👍🇧🇭🇧🇭Goooooooooooooooood JaB
