Thank you for posting this historic footage. I was a 13 year old schoolboy at Portsmouth Southern Grammar School for Boys at the time. Needless to say we didn't get the opportunity to go to see any of it - no such thing as time off from school, we were too busy with our heads in school books. I became a ShipFitter apprentice in HM Royal Dockyard, Portsmouth in September 1956 and then worked on many of the ships mentioned, I consider it an honour to have done so.
We in my grandfathers boat sailed around the whole fleet the day before, I shall never forget the lines of submarines , at the time many were doing a rehearsal. I was 6 at the time. I shall never forget that day. Thanks for the reminder.
HMS Surprise was also of the same class of HMS Alert which I served on in the Far East. HMS Alert was the Flag Ship of the C in C Far East and was known by those who served on her as the Scabby 'A'!
My owd man was on crossbow,i dont know if he was at spithead though,i was born in 54 so he could have been ,cant ask him now unfortunately ,god bless them all past and present...
Vanguard was such a handsome ship.
