    Fun Fact: The real reason the mongols were defeated was because Tsushima was hit by a storm so powerful it wiped out most of the fleet forcing the rest to retreat. And then when the mongols came back for a second invasion they were hit by another typhoon before they could even land on the island. So the storms as well as the skill of the samurai forced the mongols to do something they never did before, give up on conquering a new land.

    • @TheGhost-fk4eo
      @TheGhost-fk4eo 22 дні тому +16

      Not entirely true. During the first invasion the islands of Tsushima and Iki were conquered rather quickly. Then the mongols actually successfully landed in Hakata bay on the mainland. Then what ensued was a number of battles and skirmishes overall known as the battle of bunei. Initially the mongols had the upper hand, confusing the samurai with their intricate formations and use of gunpowder which the Japanese had never seen before. Then when the mongols encamped for the night, the Japanese would start a list of ambushes and counter attacks which would cause heavy casualties on the mongols. Then, the mongols decided that they did not have the resources to conquer Japan if this is what they were opposing, they only had 30,000 men with no proper supply line. Also remember that they were not expecting a professionally trained foe like the Samurai, all they knew about the Japanese is that they were pirates as that is what the Koreans told them. The first invasion was basically an oversized scouting party. Then it is during the return back to Korea that legend says the storms hit. Though we don’t actually know 100% if a storm wrecked their fleet in the first invasion.
      Then for the second invasion the Regent of the Shogun (the shogun at this point had no power and the real power lied with the regent) Hōjō Tokimune knew the mongols would return. So he built a defensive wall along the shores of hakata bay and its surrounding coastline. He also mobilised a large number of forces to Kyushu (Japan’s southern island) in preparation for another invasion. Then when the second invasion, this time 100,000 strong, came they were well prepared. The mongols were not able to break through the defensive walls, mostly because they were not able to mobilise their famed cavalry off their ships due to the barrages of Japanese arrows and the beach not being stable ground for them. The samurai actually managed to counter attack by boarding small vessels and stealth attacking mongol ships, taking many heads. Eventually, the storm came and wrecked the mongols (this we know happened for sure). Any survivors found along the shore (with exception to the Southern Chinese who were recently conquered by the Mongols and wee instead enslaved by the Japanese) were killed and their heads were collected for rewards. It can be argued if the mongols could have won the second invasion if the typhoon did not hit. I do not think so, they were anyways having trouble breaking through the Japanese walls, and would have suffered heavy casualties. Then even if they did, the Japanese could have just retreated further inland and could have started a scorched earth policy, along with guerrilla tactics against the mongols. The mongols would then be stuck across the ocean, in enemy territory, with no supply line, not being able to live off the land, whilst also being harassed and attacked by a skilled enemy numbering 30-40,000 strong.
      The mongols mobilised a 3rd army for another invasion of Japan. But, conflicts in south east asia distracted them and japan would not face the mongols again.

    • @EskChan19
      @EskChan19 22 дні тому +6

      Yeah, this cemented the view of the japanese that they were chosen and protected by the gods. These events became known as the kamikaze, the divine winds, and "bringing those divine winds to the enemy" was where the kamikaze-pilots of the second world war got their name from.

      @@TheGhost-fk4eoI've heard about these hypothesis too, but the widely accepted theory is related to the typhoons and storms. Do you think it's a historical misconception? Or is it that both factors could've come into play?
      On an unrelated note, i find it ironic that the Samurai during this time period were anything but what Shimura would've considered honorable. They were much more like Jin

    • @TheGhost-fk4eo
      @TheGhost-fk4eo 21 день тому +8

      @@addictedtochocolate920 This is not a hypothesis. It’s historical fact, you can watch videos online as well from certain channels such as kings and generals who has great videos on the mongol invasions. The typhoon thing is a popular exaggeration. It was exacerbated by the Imperial Japanese Government who used it as proof of the emperor’s divinity and how the Japanese people are divinely destined to be the master race.
      You’ll also be surprised to hear that Samurai of any era acted much more like Jin (minus his compassion). Mix the tactics of Jin with the personality and brutality of Kazumasa and you have what a samurai of that era was like. Samurai of any era were brutal, effective and straight to the point. Honour back then meant something very different from what it means now. Honour first and foremost meant loyalty to your Lord (if you weren’t a daimyo). And killing someone in a way that is safer for you (like stabbing them in the back) or using something that gives you a tactical advantage (such as gunpowder) IS NOT DISHONOURABLE. Shimura’s style of ‘honour’ is a very romanticised, and borderline stupid form of honour. For daimyo, to be honourable is more about being forgiving and compassionate (like Jin) now that doesn’t mean letting everyone getting away with everything. If you want an example of an honourable warlord, I recommend looking at the Life of Uesugi Kenshin, he was a brilliant strategist known for his rivalry with Takeda Shingen, being the only person to defeat Oda Nobunaga in battle, never being defeated on an open plain, his faith (he was also a devout Buddhist and remained a virgin his whole life), and his honourable conduct.
      Also whilst I’m at it I’ll also just make it clear that Ninja (or Shinobi would be the period accurate term, but there are other period accurate and regional terms for ninja) were Samurai, they were not two different warrior classes. Shinobi was one of the many jobs that a Samurai could take. They also were not Assasins (though they would assassinate someone only if there was a 100% chance of them getting away with it) they were rather reconnaissance/scouts/spies. And they did not wear black, they would blend in. Such as dressing up as a peasant, or a monk asking for donations. In fact, Shinobi/spies have been used in Japan loooong before the samurai. The main book that the Samurai would follow in all ages is Sun Tzu’s art of war, which literally has an entire chapter dedicated to the importance of spies.

    Personally, I've always considered killing the uncle as the better ending. Even though Jin doesn't believe in the "honor" that comes with a warrior's death, his uncle does. Sparing him like that just feels like a slap in the face to everything the uncle believes in, not to mention he will likely be executed and/or shamed by the Shogun for his failure to kill Jin which to the uncle is a fate worse than death. Killing him is also just the more emotionally impactful ending imo. In the end they are both crying and you can clearly see how much they love each other and that this is something neither of them ever wanted. Jin can barely bring himself to do it, and the uncle even takes Jin's arm and pulls the knife in to help him. Then it ends with Jin holding his uncle and just sobbing. Its heartbreaking and beautiful, just like the rest of their story.

    • @basketballgoku
      @basketballgoku 21 день тому +7

      I prefer the kill ending as well. The spare ending feels like the ending to a modern hero origin story that sets up the future sequels. The kill ending feels like the end of a really really good standalone movie that has no intentions of becoming a franchise.

    • @addictedtochocolate920
      @addictedtochocolate920 21 день тому +7

      My counter argument for why i think it's better to let him live: i care way more about Jin than about lord Shimura.
      As a player, i don't see Jin as myself; i see him as his own character who i i am responsible for. Meanwhile Shimura lost all my respect when he tried to frame Yuna for the decision he KNEW Jin took of his own volition. The man is somewhat of a hypocrite, as well as a fool in the art of war (all samurais are in this game because it's not historically accurate).
      While i care not for Shimura, i know Jin does, and i will not have Jin go through the traumatic event of killing his father figure just because the man feels "dishonored". If he's unable to live with such shame, he can commit seppuku instead of dragging my boy once again into his stupid, pointless, rigid rituals.

      I feel like it would be in Jin's character that he would spare his uncle/father figure. By the last chapter in his journey, his ideology has completely shifted away from when we first seen of his arc. He's grown to make his own choices more than follow the shogun and his uncle's ways. So in the end, it would make sense of him to sacrifice tradition.

    • @Gohan218

      I agree. The kill ending is way better and is the thing he would do. This whole you’re samurai or the ghost argument is kind of dumb with the choice. You can kill the uncle and still be the ghost. Like you said it’s a slap to the face and even though it hurts him more than anything I think he loves him enough to honor his wishes to make him happy.

    It is VERY interesting that the Shogun was more upset about Jin inspiring people rather than his tactics. The Shogun at that time was basically in a power play to control Japan anyway, so any threat would have to be quashed. And Shimura was so much of a traditionalist that he couldn't step outside his rigid culture to see that Tsushima would have been sacrificed without a thought if it was convenient. The OTHER ending...I felt was more appropriate but that's me. Shimura is dead either way. I felt it was better to give him the death he wanted rather than to be humiliated by the Shogun. HOPEFULLY they react to the other at some point. Fingers crossed.

      @@addictedtochocolate920 Ghost was a huge homage to the Jidai Geki films and shows. Even has the Kurosawa mode as an homage to the legendary film maker. In reality, Samurai were mercenaries. There is a LOT of play up to the whole 'honor' thing, but they were no more honorable than the medieval Knights. There was a big thing when the code was created, but in reality Samurai were only as honorable as what they could get away with. Which isn't shocking at all. Also, Samurai WERE incredibly dirty combatants and fun fact, their main weapon was the BOW not the sword. Also they were REAL quick to adopt firearms when the opportunity presented itself. There is a lot of great history there though some was obliterated during the Meiji era (such as the scrubbing of history when it came to women's roles within samurai clans and that there WERE a few female Samurai...one specifically because her brother needed someone he could trust and she was the only person he felt could keep up with him in combat). Artistic licence aside, Ghost of Tsushima was a blast to play and watch.

Turn around and face me” kind of attitude. But, I feel like Shogun did the opposite of that. Like you said, they in fact made them extremely brutal in the show (which they were). Yes they did exaggerate things in a few areas, (such as the dude killing off his whole family line for just speaking out of turn and insulting Ishido, which is unrealistic) but you have to remember this is also based off a book, so there are certain plot lines which they cannot change, or it is easier to not change. Such as the Hollywood Ninja scene they had in the most recent Episode.

    The morals of this game are completely wooshing you by. The Samurai system is flawed and the side-missions of this game delve deeper into showing that it isn't a fair or just system like it pretends to be. Ryuzo you also have to remember is a commoner and Jin is a lord. He never had the luxury of "choice" that Jin has and Jin beating him at the tournament when he was young basically made him a vagrant when Jin could have lost, but it is revealed in side missions that "Lord Sakai" could never lose to a "commoner" even if they were friends.

      I don't think it was the time. The war, the grief of lost loved ones. It was all too fresh. Imo, a strong kinship was yhe roght note to end on. You can leave romatic development to the sequel.

  • @jmhaces
    @jmhaces 22 дні тому +7

    IMO, the ending where Jin honors Lord Shimura's request for a warrior's death is way better. I never understood people who choose to spare him. After all that happened, why would Jin choose to make it about himself and his loss of status and honor in order to refuse to give his uncle his final wish when Lord Shimura is dead anyway because in all likelihood the Shogun will demand he kill himself for his failure to kill Jin. He didn't save Lord Shimura, just beat him in fight and chose to dishonor him by not giving him a samurai's death, and given that their rift was because Jin broke the samurai code and Shimura would never do that, he basically spit on him and deliberately forced his broken code of honor on Shimura himself. It literally cost Jin nothing to send his uncle off like a samurai given what both of them had already lost. Sure, he may not care about his lost honor or status, but Shimura did care and he knew it. It's a weird narrative choice that decides to prioritize their different philosophies over their actual character and love for each other.

    • @BTBSOUNDS

      It's not better and the one where he spares him is the official canon ending. And rightfully so.

      @@BTBSOUNDS At least I said "IMO" and gave reasons why, captain. Not just "Nuh-uh, it's not better and that's canon" like you because you can't explain why it's better and a better thematic fit.

    • @BTBSOUNDS
      @BTBSOUNDS 22 дні тому

      @@jmhaces Because I don't need to. But if you insist, it's cause Jin realises that honor is worthless. "Honor" is what killed the samurai on Komoda, "honor" is what killed the samurai on the bridge at Castle Shimura, "honor" is what turned Jin's only remaining family against him.
      Keeping Shimura alive isn't "dishonoring" him, it's teaching him a lesson. Him being a slave to his dumbass honor is what would've caused Tsushima to fall if not for Jin. Him dying would've served no purpose other than being yet another thing he can hide behind. Shimura isn't completely honorable, he has shady friends like the pirates of Uzumi Cove. Shimura is a hypocrite saying that Jin is ruled by his emotion and then striking his "son" two sentences later when Jin made a valid point.
      And most importantly, as Jin says, he has no honor but he will never stoop so low as to kill his own family. Meanwhile Shimura with his "honor" was ready to kill his "son" so that he can go off and start a new family. And of course before doing that, he made sure to make him ride thru his land and past his estate as he tells him that other randoms are gonna be living in the house that's been home to 7 generations of Sakai. Real fuckin honorable of him huh?
      Shimura is a cunt and deserves to live and be seen as the man that raised the Ghost, the man that has no honor, that taught people to rise up against stupidity and defend themselves when the people that should be defending them choose not to cause "honor".

    • @EskChan19
      @EskChan19 21 день тому +2

      @@jmhaces Thematically, Jin sparing Lord Shimura is a better fit. The ENTIRE GAME is about Jin learning to not be a slave to honor and do the thing that's best for all, even if it's not honorable. Lord Shimura is a good leader, he still has influence with the Shogun, and knows Tsushima better than any Samurai send by the Shogun. And as he said, he wanted to push the mongols back for as long as he lived. Jin wanted that too so even if they can't do so together, having an ally who is predictable is a good thing for the Ghost.
      And as much as people like to say so, it's very unlikely that the Shogun would have him killed. I know people think that Samurai were ordered to kill themselves for literally every slip-up, but that's not how that worked. Remember that saving face is extremely important in Japan. The Shogun send an entire army to defend Tsushima from the Mongols, and it would be considered a huge failure on the Shoguns part if it came out that they were useless and Jin practically saved the island on his own. So what is much more likely to happen is that the Shogun will proclaim that Lord Shimura valiantly led the reinforcements from the Shogun to victory against the Mongols, a feat that would bring Lord Shimura and the Shogun a lot of honor and let both of them save face.
      So Jin killing him would have been "The samurai way", yes, but he would have lost a quasi-ally, would have put a much bigger target on the Ghost (since being a traitor is bad but being a traitor who killed one of the now most famous lords of japan would have ensured a straight up manhunt on the ghost) and it also shows that Jin has grown more human over the course of the game. He would have doubtlessly had no qualms killing Lord Shimura before, but it was his growth, his abandonment of holding onto Samurai ideals for the sake of it and him learning to do what is best for the people regardless of what honor dictates that allows him to make the choice to spare Lord Shimura in the end.
      Because of that this ending makes much more sense IMO. Jin killing Shimura would have literally undone all of the character growth he has gone through the entire game. And again, it's extremely unlikely that Lord Shimura will carry many negative consequences. He'll probably have to pay a higher tax or get some corporal punishment or put under house arrest for a bit, but he's unlikely to be worse off than he was before the mongols invaded, and much more likely to be in much better standing with the Shogun and all of Japan now.

    • @jmhaces
      @jmhaces 21 день тому

      @@EskChan19 Not really. I already addressed that. Jin may not be a slave to his honor or the samurai code anymore after all that he experienced during the entire game. But he knows for a fact that his uncle doesn't share his views, since that disagreement literally led to them having that duel, and in that ending he deliberately chose to refuse to honor his uncle final wish and opted to make it about himself and his sacrifices.
      The whole father-son dynamic gets closure in the ending where he kills Shimura, they acknowledge that their bond and love survives the shitshow that's tied to their honor or station, and promise to meet again in the next life.
      In that ending Jin still doesn't give a fuck about his honor anymore and he walks away to continue being the Ghost, only he does it without pretending to have any moral high ground because he didn't give Shimura a samurai's death by "refusing to kill his own family" though he still beat the shit out of him and caused him to fail the Shogun's mandate, which is not a good look for his uncle regardless of whether the Shogun decides to order Shimura's death after that or not, or even whether his uncle manages to survive the wounds he received in their duel at all.
      It's fine if you like the ending where he spares him. To me it doesn't make much sense in the context of these two men's specific relationship and the actual events they went through during the game, as well as their backstory. I can acknowledge the points you make and maybe the writers had a different intention when writing that ending and their intention matches your reading of that ending, but as I said, to me it looks like Jin deliberately chose to dishonor his uncle with the excuse that he had no honor himself anymore, and those are two different things.
      I mean, if Shimura was fine with being dishonored himself for the good of Tsushima, thus being on board with your take of Jin not killing him giving Tsushima a better chance of beating back the Mongol invasion regardless of his failure to kill Jin and whatever fallout could result from that, then he wouldn't have been so against Jin becoming the Ghost in the first place because it was the pragmatic choice. To Shimura the samurai code is more important than simply defeating the Mongols, he always showed it, and Jin choosing to not honor it after their duel was a stain on Shimura's honor and not just Jin's honor. It seemed even kind of petty, since we already knew he had nothing to lose anyway. His titles and lands had been taken away form him by the Shogun, clan Sakai was no more, and his death had been ordered.
