  • So I finally got my hands on the Roland SP404 Mk2 after wanting to try it out for years. I won't lie, at first it felt like an alien spaceship, but after a few weeks I'm finally starting to really get it (even if I'm a total beginner).
Thank you to zZounds for sending this over, if you're already thinking of buying one, this affiliate link helps the channel out with a commission: www.zzounds.co...
The Arturia AstroLab also makes a really solid companion to the 404 (although it's pricey and there are definitely other options you could pair with like a MiniFreak or maybe a Wavestate?:

When you said "looks like its a combination between the CMI and Emulator II" playing the chords casually in your own bedroom, I wondered what reaction I would have had hearing that phrase and Big_strings preset in 1989.
How lucky are we nowadays ?

2:29 Arturia is just a keyboard for "plugins"....Pretty pointless if you already own the V collecion software....They should give a big discount to people who own the V collection.

If you only use the SP from drums/percussion I think it is worth the money. In tandem with the Arturia very groovy 😎

Wish you could record to a pad while it's playing. Then you'd have a 16 track live looper with effects..

    • @DylanParisMusic
      @DylanParisMusic  5 місяців тому

That would be sick! Would also love if the looper could do 8 bars, 4 feels too limited but I’m still glad they added that

I'm sure you're an expert by now but using envelopes would smooth the samples you also can sample the sequence to a pad and resample new tracks with all the tracks playing just make sure is on EXT in mode

Fixed bar length made this thing so much more usable. I fell out of using it after the first few months of having it but I want to get back to using it once I get a small synth to pair with it. There are a lot of bugs in the new version that are cuasing those crashes, but hopefully they'll work those out. And it definitely is a challenge for me to get more than a basic idea going on the SP. It's hard to take it to "full song" with the sort of things I'd want to implement in my production.
There's a way to record along to the pattern while it's playing. You go to pattern select, resample, make sure "Ext. In" is set for recording setting and when you resample it'll just record what you've played alongside the pattern.
I think this beat actually turned out good man. It just has a nice harmony and melody. That's all you need man haha.

Thanks man! I was actually pretty happy with it too, I was in a bad mood this morning so I figured it would end up bad haha. And hopefully they fix the bugs. I can definitely understand running into a wall with this vs an MPC or the push 3 for example. I do like how deliberate I have to be when I use it.
I’ll also give that resemble method a shot, that sounds super helpful. I was using skip back a bit like that early on but I don’t think you can lock skip back into set bar lengths

The sp404 is my life blood these days for song arrangement and making weird industrial sounds. I'm saving video this for later, since I gotta go put on dark spandex tights and fight crime right now, but I'm commenting cause I'm really excited to see how you like and use it. Tomorrow I watch.
Until then... I am the night! *Rappels away*

@@DylanParisMusic this was a great watch. You'll get the hang of the weird 404 flow, I've seen you use much more complicated stuff, but it is a bit chunky.
One thing I do that helps make things faster is I don't trim my loops perfectly, I just make sure there's at least one note at the beginning of the loop (you can get rid of it with an envelope later). Then I put the loop on the first step of an 8bar pattern and it will cut off perfectly after 8 bars. That's how I build songs without worrying much about loop lengths.
The real magic for me was resampling. It's so fast and easy to resample with fx, and it makes the 404 feel like a synthesizer.
For example: I made an 8-bar Rhodes loop on the mc101 and sampled it. Then- cloud delay, reverb, then chromatic pitch shifter and, reverse, and vinyl sim, and it's suddenly a warbly spacey pad.
Same Rhodes loop pitched down 12 semitonea with distortion, Juno chorus, overdrive, and cassette sim resampling and in a minute you can have this heavy doom metal sounding guitar.
Drench that in reverb and use the filter live while resampling and you can get an industrial horror drone out of it.
I think you're doing it right man! I didn't think I'd enjoy working with the 404 as much as I did, and even if you don't wanna build full songs on it, it still does the whole chop a vinyl sample and play drums over it thing pretty well.

At the beginning of the year I was thinking on this vs the maschine plus. Went with the latter, despite being double the price, purely because I worked with the software before and had some kind of "in point" of working without a computer. I get the "working with sound vs a daw" though. Working mainly with guitars just starting to record bits and loops allows me to quickly build an instrumental.
Not quite there yet to fully arrange etc on the thing itself, but its all fun and exploration.
Thats what I like about your channel, its not just about "what's the best so&so" but mores how it allows creativity to be captured and how gear allows that to happen.

Keep the sp404 for efx alone. They match well with the digitakt. I’m getting the digitakt 2 too 😂. The pattern seq on the sp404 is still so weird for to get into. But I do use it to record samples. And the app is handy in Ableton to drag and drop samples. But once I get the tr rec under control it’ll be handier. But I agree it’s not at all intuitive. Like press pattern, remain, record, sub, record , etc etc really?
