This song is about Quentin Crisp, a gay Englishman who survived decades of vicious treatment at the hands of his fellow countrymen, until he decided to move to New York. There, he finally found a home where he was accepted and even lionized. His courage was extraordinary, and yet he would say he wasn't courageous at all - merely stubborn. He just refused to be bullied into changing who he was, and preferred to take beatings (many, over many years) rather than deny his own self. He couldn't help being who he was, and never, ever, EVER apologized. (This got him into trouble near the end of his life, when he refused to apologize for a careless remark that pissed off pretty much everybody.) I wish I could have met him.
Yeah, because it's only the English who despise and mistress homosexual, isn't it..... Try settling in Saudi Arabia or Jamaica or Scotland or Uganda and I think you'll feel more pleasantly disposed towards England and the English.
@@davidhuggan6315 Yes, that's the main thing to point out. The old lady you see all along in this video is actually a man, and it is the man this song was written about. It is very rare to have a song about someone and that someone appears all along the video of that song.
Sting's album The Dream of the Blue Turtles is a wonderful departure from his normal rock catalog. He gathered talented jazz musicians, like Branford Marsalis on sax, to accompany him. Fortress Around Your Heart and If You Love Someone Set Them Free are two of my faves. Sting's entire catalog is a rabbit hole you won't regret.
This song is an homage to actor, writer and gay icon Quentin Crisp, the old man you see in the video. He moved from England to New York in 1980/81, it is a song about Sting's deep admiration for his courage and character.
@@annesmith2259Was it the english tv movie "The naked civil servant" with Jonh Hurt? Quentin was the epitome of class, died in 1999 but is unforgettable.
Happy Easter everyone. Love that you going the rabbit hole that is Sting. You will ❤ the music from The Police, the band that he was in for many years😊
Sting is in my top 3 favorite artists! Most of the songs in his solo career are a mostly jazzy feel -- Such a different departure from The Police! Thanks for this great reaction choice! ✌💙✌
Sting was the lead singer of the Police! He went solo in the eighties! He had an extremely successful careers with both! That is the amazing Branford Marsalis in the video playing the soprano saxophone! I love this song! Sting could do no wrong!❤❤
Mr. Brandford Marshalis on the saxophone. Cream! The song is about Quentin Crisp, a gay icon in the seventies, the English Man In New York of the song.
"Fortress Around Your Heart" from 1985 is one of Sting's best songs. I hope you continue going down the Sting rabbit hole. I also recommend highly reacting to "All For Love" from 1993 with Sting, Rod Stewart and Bryan Adams singing. This is a great song from the movie "The Three Musketeers" with Charlie Sheen and Chris O'Donnell. Happy Easter!
The album "Nothing Like the Sun" of which this song is on is a masterpiece imo. So is the "Bring on the Night" album. There is a great documentary film of the same name "Bring on the Night" about the preparation for and on his first solo career concert. It is really good. Provides a lot of insight to his personality, and how he goes about arranging music. He is a genius writer/composer. If you want another fantastic drum solo you should check out another song by Sting "I Burn For You" from the performance on "Bring on the Night". Omar Hakim has a fabulous solo in that.
Sting asked Bradford Marsalis, Brother of Wynton Marsalis, the leader of of the New York City, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra to be a part of Stings first Solo Album after breaking away from The Super Group THE POLICE..
Another song sample. Shine head I'm a Jamaican in New York. Word for word but Jamaican. People can't create their own music they got to steal others music

@misterstubbs1611well done you! I love this quote! Who wants it be in anyway if it means not being yourself? Not me.
And Quentin features in this video

Branfod was accused of "selling out" to pop music with this, someone must have thought he would care...
@@isabelsilva62023Good for him
- it's crazy how judgemental people can be
"If manners maketh man" and "at night a candle's brighter than the sun" are Shakespeare references. Sting taught English lit before he began his band.
Sting still brings his reggae vibe from when he was in The Police.

I seen a film about him in the early 80s my introduction to homophobia

Hurt was gonna do a follow up to the first movie. Don’t know if it was ever done though.

I can't believe I've never heard this song. Good choice. I rate this above most of Sting's other music. Well done Sting.
Ive known of this beautiful song for years and absolutely love it
The track “We’ll be Together” is what made me buy this album, but I quickly fell in love with this song! The whole album is really good!
Sting is in my top 3 favorite artists! Most of the songs in his solo career are a mostly jazzy feel -- Such a different departure from The Police! Thanks for this great reaction choice! ✌💙✌
This was one of the BEST reactions I’ve ever seen to this timeless classic. Thank you for fully understanding and appreciating true art!!!
The incomparable Branford Marsalis on that Soprano Sax..killing it. This is in my opinion a masterpiece!!!
Yes, be yourself, there are enough other people already. 😄❤️❤️🎶🎶

Jazzzzzz, the man with clarinet, great
80s charts music was so versatile and well produced. „Fields of Gold“ and „Russians“ were also great songs by Sting.
This whole album is fantastic. I got it when it first came out since I'm a big Police fan (his band).
Great song by a great artist!
Really love that y'all did this one...Sting really put together some great bands!
I love this song!! 😎😎😎💋💖💋💖☕😁
