To me, Stephen King writing the sewer scene isn’t half as weird as the fact that his editors and publishers had to read through the book and go ”yeah, let’s keep that in”.
I like to think none of his editors actually read it, it's a really long book and pretty much everything King wrote was gold so just publish it, it'll be fine.

King's editors didn't really have much control over him especially in the 90s cause he was like, the world's most popular author ever. Like in terms of books sold he's one of the most prolific authors in human history. And he was already getting movie and TV deals and was basically a writing god. It's kinda like how people weren't able to tell George Lucas "no" after the original trilogy so the second trilogy was way worse. Except Stephen King is actually a really good author so it doesn't manifest as poorly. Dude just can't write an ending to save his life. It's almost beautiful how terrible his endings are considering how phenomenal his world building, characterization, and horror setting is.

Also, Screenrant does have some articles mentioning old movies. Fore example, "Lawrence of Arabia Has a Forgotten Sequel Starring Ralph Fiennes" is an actual article on Screen Rant. But yeah, the audience will be happy with whatever button for the old movies.

Ryan could do one of those spinning images of a half-folded newspaper that were popular in older movies, and then have it pop up with some headline or review about the movie from that period. And make sure the paper always includes a secondary article about "New petitions against tax".
Just find an old review or something about the actors from around that time and do the same joke stinger as the current screen rant articles are used for. Then it still has that what people actually wrote about it punch line.
For older movies I'd love to see pitch meetings for them. You can end with the original movie poster. You're well written pitches are all the punchline we need.

I would love to see you do pitch meetings for older movies. And as you pointed out earlier in the video: You can do whatever you want. So the thing with the missing article on screenrant isn't problematic, I'd say.

A smash cut to a retro newspaper article/review of a classic movie would be awesome. Those are a lot easier to find and reference these days than they were just 5-10 years ago

Yeah, he could just do some kind of hokey sepia filter just to make it clear. Even have a tagline in the video title, like "Pitch Meeting - Classics". He could have so much fun with the background and costumes too, now that I think about it.

Here's a question (I'm sorry if someone has asked this before): Do you ever regret not mentioning something in a pitch meeting (like certain production notes or plot holes)?
You could totally do classic movies. You could dress the characters up in period clothes (budget and availability permitting), make the image look time appropriate, and even if you made up headlines for the end, they could be commenting on the movie itself, the time period, and people who worked on it. It could be a built up through the Pitch Meeting. You should try it!
Absolutely YES for the classic movie Pitch Meetings! If you can't do a end stinger that satisfies you, don't worry about it too much - we mostly come here for the meeting itself, and the Screen Rant punchline is a bonus. Just do what works for you.
I appreciate that you used a picture of A'Tun from Discworld for the Turtle reference, BTW. Also, I just figured out that the bronchitis diagnosis is scary because you have to talk a lot for your work, so you layered in some nuance in the humor.

I'm sure you can find articles critical of classic movies, maybe not from screenrant but who cares, think of a criticism of that movie and search it, i'm sure something will come up, the internet is full of people whining about everything!

As impressive as it is to know that screenrant doesn’t make you do the article punchline at the end yet you’re still committed to doing it and it really does make me respect the gag more, in my unfiltered opinion: it’s the least important part of the pitch meeting experience and that includes the bulging eyes in the thumbnails

That weird bendy little finger... had me dying... his reaction is priceless. I never noticed it toll now... he could do some OMG moments after the classics like reading wierd stuff that happened on sets or something.
Will you ever be doing the “wow wow wow…wow” gag but have executive guy make a really long pause after the third wow, have the screenwriter guy asume that he’s done, continue talking and immediately be interrupted by the fourth “wow”?

Imma be honest, it was fun hating on Disney movies, but now they're so repetitive even making fun of them is not fun anymore. Bring on the classics! Screen Rant should write articles to accomodate Pitch Meeting :)

You know I like the idea of you doing some older movies even without the real article! You could write your own punchline, or even convince ScreenRant to do a "Top 10 classics you need to watch"
I like that you do the ScreenRant headline at the end because it feels to me like a way of giving back to the channel that helped you grow. I actually rarely watch it or read their articles but I think it's nice you have that. I'd love it if you cover movies that SR doesn't have articles about because I love your Pitch Meetings. It might be a good idea for SR to create content about stuff that's not making headlines now. They do lists and rankings, so they might consider using your awesome series to reach an audience that's not all about what's hot right at this moment.
If you come up with another idea, like fake news or simply change the last part of the format, I'm sure I'll love it. I love your sense of humor and your recently confessed compulsion to make sure you don't make mistakes. So, I (and I'm sure it's not just me) trust you to come up with something awesome.

@NASkeywest I think so, too. He mentioned it on another revisited Pitch Meeting. But in this video, he says he can change the format, so I assumed they must give him a lot of creative freedom.
It's so weird, I read the book as a kid back in the early 80's and remember that the whole "kids orgy" thing didn't really phase me at the time. I guess so much weird stuff had happened already in the book that it was just one more weird thing. But then I completely erased it from my memory and decades later when it was brought up I was like "Oh man, that's just...messed up." Definitely a combination of drugs and King's background living through the free-love 60's.
I read it in about 1990, and the kids orgy didn't bother me either. It was certainly a weird page-and-half, but we were already well into the typical disjointed fever dream of a Stephen King story climax (giggity). I imagine him writing that at 3:00 AM, at the peak of a serious cocaine bender, and believing it was the most touching, beautiful scene he'd ever written.
Or maybe King is just a gross creep.
He was right though. People were less sensitive about child sexuality prior to the McMartin Preschool scandal.
IT was the last SK book I read, for about 20 years. It was so god-awful long, with so much pointless detail and rambling. He lost me. At the end, I was skipping whole pages of description just to get to plot points so I could tell how it ends. Hit the sex part, and said, "Wha....??" Wasn't offended, just put it down as a pointless exploration of "bonding"? Thought it was really dumb, had nothing to do with the story except SK's neourosis. Was that book 1000 pages?

The worst thing about the orgy scene is it happens near the end of the book. Despite what people who haven’t read the book might think the story isn’t split into two halves like the movies and the miniseries. The two time periods run parallel to each other and constantly switched back and forth between 1958 and 1985. So both confrontations with it happens back to back and the orgy happens right after they defeat him in 1958. So it really sits with the reader once you finish it.

@@PixlyPenguin I once heard somewhere that it is meant as the payoff to Beverly’s character arc. For the whole book her sexuality is being oppressed by her father but this is finally the moment where she takes control and offer herself to the others. So it’s kind of an empowering moment for her - although I found Kings need to describe the size of each of the boys very distracting.
I’ve noticed King has a tendency to really describe what’s going on in the male characters pants, also in many og his other books.

The best description of those two characters is "permasmile psychopaths" (from the "Honest Trailer" for "Pitch Meeting."
While I cannot say your acting was bad, it is amazing how much better you portray these characters in your newer stuff. It reminds me of any start trek series the first few episodes you find yourself thinking wow, these people can't act and about 4 or 5 episodes in they play the characters well.
You could always use actual newspaper articles and lean into the antiquity of it by changing the colour grade of the episode to suit the era the film was made (in addition to any costume changes). It would be extra work...but between internet archives and libraries it could be possible? But making a fake website or newspaper sound acceptablw, I'd love to see you cover all manner of classic movies that predate the internet era!
Agreed. I think it would be good if he used non-screenrant but real articles.
Plus, he already did a pitch meeting for the original Dumbo, and he made that black and white, so he has experience (and of course, experience in replacing that computer in the back with a typewriter).
Definitely classic pitch meetings would be awesome, you could even do them as their own separate thing as in have a specific intro for them or something
I love these "revisited" episodes. It helps us understand how Ryan's crazy, intellectual, comedic mind comes to be.

IMHO the funniest pitch meetings are the ones about movies I saw and then realising funny or stupid stuff I missed. I somehow dont see the appeal in a pitch meeting about a movie that was made around the time when my grandma was born and the funniest thing in the world was a cake to the face. I don't get why people even ask for that.
I think you should definitely do the films that were shot before the Screen Rant came to be. After all we’re not just watching these pitches for the last punch line; the whole video is a blast!

Pitch Meeting - Classics. As a "Classic" it sets it apart from post screen rant movies. this gives you the ability to change the format to fit the era before screen rant. You can keep everything you do normally or even in the period correct fashion for the time of the film. instead of a screen rant article, you could: use an actual article from time; bloopers/outtakes/behind the scenes stuff from the movie; some interesting true facts about the movie/actors/making of/ etc.; funny edited clips from the movie; there's a lot that can be done here without the restraints of being a SC article. Love your content and look forward to future episodes!

I have a weird confession to make, which is kinda the greatest compliment I can make at the same time.
Most days when I can‘t sleep, I watch pitch meeting and keep it running for the whole night. There is just something soothing and pure to this format.
I totally get you. There is no loud or annoying voices so you can sleep pretty easy, the jokes are very good, and just it's all calm. I don't do it but I get it.
There's one mistake that every movie satire channel misses in Spider-Man 2. Pitch Meeting, Cinemasins, and probably Honest Trailers all make a joke about why Peter doesn't explain what happened to Harry's father when Harry confronts him about it. And the reason is because at that point in time, Harry didn't know his father was The Green Goblin, and Norman said "Don't Tell Harry" right before he died. And so that's why Peter doesn't explain what happened and instead just says "There's bigger things happening here than you and me." It's not until after that scene that Harry finds the lair. So many people don't pick up on that.

If you made your own end gag for older movies, it should be something that fits each period, like a newspaper for oldest movies, maybe a news broadcast that looks like it was filled in 1985, or whatever fits well with the movie/joke you're going for. I know me and a lot of people are happy to watch any Pitch Meeting you put out, hence why we are on this video, and we will support you in any decisions you want to try out. Thank you for making content that makes us laugh and smile and providing us with your own unique comedy.
My question would be: Have you ever been approached by studios/directors/film makers to consult on their scripts/writing? If yes, what kind of consulting did you do and were you paid?

It’s great to revisit those to see how better your voice work is now, I find a lot of early PMs have the writer and producer kinda have the same voice and intonations but nowadays they’re really two very distinct characters. Super interesting to see that evolution. Keep up the great comedy! 👍

Given the existence of the cosmic turtle in the book, I love the idea of IT being one of the teenage mutant ninja turtles even more. Also, I still remember the popularity of TMNT in the 80’s/90’s and articles about how children were finding their way into the sewers so they could look for the TMNT (and then probably getting lost). So IT being a TMNT is very believable.

Btw, my sister and I always watch your Pitch Meetings, and her favorite movie in the world is The Wizard of Oz. And I think it would make a fantastic Pitch Meeting, even with the lack of modern articles about it.

If you did The Wizard of Oz you'd have a chance to dress in period costumes, the office could be Art Deco, and you could have a spinning newspaper effect. And it could be in sepia tones. Probably someone has already suggested this, but I'm not reading all 318 comments to verify that.
Wizard of Oz is a great one because he could also talk about how much abuse the actors were put through.

There are so many older movies that would fit perfectly into the Pitch Meeting format aside from the end gag, so I'd say definitely go for it! I've been pushing for the Truman Show for a few years now haha

For the ending gag with older movies, a collection of articles from the respective era could work or come up with a sarcastic headline that would fit the social culture of the time against ours.

Yes Ryan, I'd love to see you do Pitch Meetings for classic films like Lawrence of Arabia, and wouldn't mind at all that doing so would necessitate scrapping your usual ending format for those particular videos!!! I think it'd be awesome to see.
I think everybody will be totaly okay if you make something else to finish an episode if it means you could cover any older movie. Your work is amazing, I don't watch Pitch Meetings waiting impatiently to see a ScreenRant article :)
This has been my absolute favorite Pitch Meeting for exactly that wordplay with the title. I watched it, and showed it to two other people, and couldn’t stop cracking up during that bit.
