This was very a timely video. After 13 years of photographing baseball with digital cameras, I found myself getting burned out. I dusted off my speed graphic and my crown graphic in 4x5 and took them to a local Drag race to see if I could make any decent photos. I could not, but I had a lot of fun learning and I’ll get better.
In my day to day job I use DSLR’s, I have my own mirrorless camera but I learnt my craft on film cameras back in 1990. Recently I purchased my first medium format film camera and have subsequently bought another four varying from 645 to 6x9. Now when I go out at weekends I will always take a film camera and usually leave my mirrorless at home. The beauty for me is that using film slows you down, I will maybe take five or six shots, sometime more sometimes even less, but each shot is more thought out, taking more time over composition, exposure, film choice, format size choice etc. I believe that this in turn makes you a better photographer. My next purchases will be a TLR and then on to Large Format. So in response to your video, I’ll take the Speed/Crown Graphic over the Nikon any day of the week.
Let's not forget the convenience of a digital image (when paired with a computer) and processing times. Nevertheless, I love just handling my analogue cameras, even if I'm not taking any serious photos. I like to care for them and bring them back to life. I can't help admiring the beauty of these marvels. 😁 We'll never see the likes of them again. I owned a Canon 5D II with f/2.8 lenses and I hated using it for photography (I bought it to make movies). It was just too complicated! I kept thinking of how easy it is to pick up an analogue SLR camera and take a photo. In the end I sold it and re-bought some analogue cameras to reassure myself that you CAN understand and stay in control of your image.
Yes, agree. Modern digital cameras are so, so convenient. Ultimately, the market decided what it wanted. It chose speed/convenience/ease of use when 35mm cameras were launched and speed/convenience/ease of use when digital cameras became available. Thanks for commenting - always appreciated.
This is why I like my Hasselblad V system. If I want modern, I just put my digital back on get to shooting. If I want to really slow down, 120 film back goes on.
Yes, agree. The Graflex was an extreme example. In reality I think many photographers will benefit hugely spending time using a Hasselblad, Bronica or Mamiya. Not as painfully slow to use as a press camera!

Jonathan, you speak my kind of language! If only more people were aware of the imaging possibilities and longevity of older cameras. In fact today, I have been using my 5x4 Ebony, an absolutely beautiful camera.

Photographic practice needs to get back to photographers being in control of image taking and post production and not be subservient to the latest technology being foisted on us by the image industry.

Would like to see you do a video on the old Mamiya Press MF, the 23 and Universal which can be found fairly readily for reasonable, with the standard 6x9 back or the clever tri-back (6x9, 6x7 or 6x6). Am curious to know how you think they hold up, as the Universal seems to have some advantages over the classic press cameras, and disadvantages no doubt.
Do you have any videos on the Pentax 67 cameras? I would be interested in seeing that. I didn’t see it when looking at the backlog of videos. Thanks for all your reviews which have been very helpful for me.
I love my Nikon Z6II for all that it is, I also love my Bronica SQ and Nikon F2 for what they do. Both the Analog and digital are great because its all about the picture you take.
Great video! Thanks for the insight. I think many of us have GAS and think that another camera will make us a better photographer. But honestly, when I started focusing on what I actually need in a camera or lenses as a tool, is when I started improving. I focused on using them in the type of photography that I do. I see so many that went into Large Format and leave it, is a slowed down and expensive process. Some can benefit from use of the larger size film, tilt and shift movements, where some may find that a SLR is sufficient. When I began assessing my photography type and style is when things came together.

Digital cameras come with varying specifications, suited for specific tasks, but for those who aren't professional photographers, it's more about the camera being more or less bothersome. With film cameras, it's an entirely different story. I have a film SLR, a Linhof 6x9 (kind of a press camera, though not exactly a Linhof Press), and an old rangefinder film camera, each offering a unique experience. I've never had the pleasure to shoot with something like a Hasselblad, perhaps one day, but I know that it would be an entirely different experience. On another occasion, I acquired a nice Rolleicord, which brought another set of surprises. Unfortunately, this is something that's difficult to explain. You need to hold it in your hands, load a roll of film, and see the results. It might turn out that you capture images you wouldn't have considered with a different camera by your side.
Investments into "software" - books and/or education classes about photography, composition artistic fundamentals, etc. - are as important as gear, maybe even more important. I don't doubt the convenience of new/modern cameras, and I highly appreciate them, but they per se didn't make my pictures any better.
For me he main reason doing analog photography is to decelerate. Thank you for the wise realization, that the only real advantage of digital photography is to accelerate. Haven't seen that before.

It’s a Crown Graphic made by Graflex. Not a rare camera but very hard to find in decent condition.
