How can the Nikon F2 be a better camera than a modern digital Sony, Nikon or Canon? Modern equipment can give you too much with innovation marching ahead of what photographers actually need.

Understanding Leica M Rangefinder Cameras. Essential viewing if you're buying a film or digital M
My two front dials are stuck and only rotate a little. What do I do?
Thank you very much!
Hope it was useful!
Hi Jonathan, I was gifted a Bronica ETR, the older ones with the one lever on the back rather than twin. That thing is a little pain but it does lock on and I can spool my film to 1. No problem using the main twisty dial on the back. I can also advance the film using that. However, I can’t get the film to advance properly using the hand crank. That hand crank is needed to open up to the back of the camera to prime it for shutter release, and that part works fine. But I can take a photo, crank one revolution until it stops me, take another, etc forever and it will never advance the number. I can hear the film rolling but I’m afraid to open the back. Where can I find a dummy roll? And do I need to service the hand crank or could I be doing something else wrong? Thanks so much for your videos I’m so happy I found your channel. Cheers. Happy new year.
Is mirror locked up very expensive to fix
Impossible to say. It might just need servicing but could be something more serious.
I ordered one from Japan but they mirror locked up so I sent it back and ordered another one I think I will love the RB 67
Will a 2 cam work on a 1 cam? I'm looking for lenses for my mother's old Leicaflex SL. She had several lenses at one point but between moving and downsizing, we can't find any of them. I'm pretty sure it's one of the early models from the 1960's (1 cam version).
SL needs 2 cam lenses
Thanks for making this video. One thing you need to include in the check list is to look out for any tiny red dots by taking a few shots against a black background. Zoom in and scroll around the images you’ve just taken. If you find any tiny red dots in the images, that’ll mean that spot in the sensor is dead cell or burn out.
I have a late model F2 from 1979, mint condition and can say that it’s probably the best of the professional 35mm manual focus cameras and probably far more serviceable. I am selling my mint F3HP, while it is a gem of a camera, has some great features, I just don’t use it enough and it will be harder to find service should the electronics fail.
Beautiful camera. Really is so beautiful
Jonathan, please forgive the naivety of this question. I'm interested in purchasing a TC-201 teleconverter for use on an early Nikon F2 Photomic and 105mm f2.5 lens. All my lenses are of the ai variety with 'rabbit ears'. Presumably therefore, auto metering will be lost with my proposed combination? Thank you.
Yes, correct. No metering without rabbit ears!
@WorldwideCameraExchange You're too kind, Jonathan. Thank you for taking the time. Atb.
I have an ETRSi in good cosmetic condition, all seems to work as it should apart from the mirror. When winding the film crank on the mirror decends when the crank is half way, but as soon as it reaches full wind on the mirror flips back up, meaning of course that I cannot see through the lens when composing the shot etc. Am I doing something wrong? or is the camera faulty and if so it is it possible to repair economically? Many thanks for your videos.
It will need to be serviced … assuming the mirror lock up isn’t engaged?
@@WorldwideCameraExchange Thanks for the response, I have checked that the mirror lock up isn't engaged and am pretty sure that it isn't. It's good to know that a service will sort it out, just hope that it's economical given the cameras age. Thanks again.
Hello and thank you. What would the nr 5291403 number on the front of my 80mm lens mean?
Thanks very much for the walkthrough. It was great! Mine is draining batteries even when it's off, have you ever heard about this issue? I'm in Colombia and there aren't many people with experience with these cameras :(
You’ll need to get it checked over by a Contax specialist. Hopefully it will be repairable.
great video!! I just bought one of those, and if you would actually show a video on how to load a film, it would be very much appreciate it! I have countless times done it wrong with other cameras and the frustration is real.
I have a handheld meter I'm using a 2x on an 80mm c lens to 160. Do I need to compensate for loss of light w converter by 2x ? Thank you
With any 2x converter you will lose 2 stops of light.
Very helpful. The numbered circle in 12 on , is that for asa reminder etc ?
Earlier Hasselblad backs have mechanical film reminders. Later backs only have a slot for the end of the film carton.
As always, very clear and useful. Thank you.
Thanks. Glad it was useful.
I have many original rollei mutar accessories made in Germany in optimal conditions, I am from Argentina, I am interested in selling the entire lot. Thank you so much!
Just bought a Canon R7 body from HDEW. Arrived in two days. All OK. I bought a Canon RP body from them four years ago and all was good. Several friends have had the same experience. Dealing with them is just the same as dealing with a camera dealer in the UK. Can be ordered online or as I did, on the phone. They also give a three year warranty with a specialist repairer. All details enclosed in the box.
Not all grey importers are bad, as I say in the video. Some are very reliable. A brand new factory fresh Canon (if that’s what you actually receive) is the same anywhere, regardless of where it is bought.
Very clear, very no nonsense. Well done. I'm getting the C220 for the very reasons you state.
Excellent cameras enjoy!
Very well said sir. Getting my second F2 Titanium in the mail today. Greetings
The titanium version is the best of the best!
That would even be relatively easy as the SP and the F have a lot of pieces in common
9.8/10.0. FANTASTIC review. This is exactly what I was hoping for. Incredibly concise, informational and well done. HIGHLY reommended review. Thank you!!!
Glad it was useful - thanks
I would add another guess, I don't have an access to any sources from that time to see if it makes sense timeline-wise (esp. regarding a similar change of models from EL to EL/M), but one of the simplest explanations could be that at first they themselves did not consider it a launch of a new model. More of an improvement to a product they otherwise considered satisfactory in the line of 500s. Because after all this is a very small change to earn a product a new name entirely. Then after some time they could have decided they may actually give it a separate, yet related name (maybe when considering analogous shift in the EL)?
Perhaps. But an interchangeable screen is a significant improvement.
Very helpful man!
Glad it’s useful
Just after some advice if possible.. I'm tempted to buy the mark ii version, I've only been doing photography for 2 years , currently own a canon 90d and more than happy using a dslr atm, but i fancy adding a full frame to the collection. Would the mark ii version be a good buy?
Yes, they’re great value but avoid heavily used cameras.
@WorldwideCameraExchange thanks for that. I've been looking on MPB UK and they have a couple in excellent condition and shutter counts about 70k or lower.
I have a plastic screw driver specifically for this purpose.
Thank you! Yashica twin lens cameras are another option, potentially at a lower price. There are probably other good brands out there too.
Yashica 124g is a great camera!
Could you please do a talk on EV meters/metering?
They are beautiful machines that feel great in use!
Agree!
With billions of people on earth and billions of products sold; I think all products should be designed and supported to last the span of a human life. That means a camera, computer or automobile purchased when a person is 20 should be updatable and serviceable for another 60 years. This idea may sound radical but when given thought it makes sense. Otherwise it is off to the landfill. I have little confidence in recycling efforts. In a few hundred years humans will have mighty big landfills if we don’t change our attitude towards product longevity.
There’s also a version with dark slide holder and A12 with a star on the detach knob. Is it newer/older? I see people mark it as version IV on eBay
The version with the darkslide holder is the latest. There have been many minor variations over the years - I’ve only referenced the major upgrades.
dear lord, that is one mint looking F2.
I haven’t had fungus issues but I have noticed that small imperfections or dirt on the front element if a lens tends to have little if any effect on image quality. Damage or debris on the rear element of a lens is said to be a serious problem. Internal imperfections might or might not be problematic. Can anyone comment on this issue?
Small spots of fungus won’t affect image quality. But fungus will get worse over time and spores might spread to other equipment.
Thank you very much
Hope it was useful
Great explanation. Very easy to understand.
Thanks. Enjoy your Hasselblad.
Thank you very much, it helped me to identify my grandpa leica III g
Glad it was useful
Build quality in the film cameras is usually far better than with modern digital equipment , particularly with that notorious peeling away of the rubber from Nikon bodies . Yes , agree with what has been said about the creative and thinking aspects to picture taking . Maximising depth of field using Hyperfocal Distance is something I used a lot way back when . Still have an F2 Nikon , which I do use occasionally . Am midway through a roll of Ilford HP 5 at present .
AIs also S for speed of focusing. Less turn on the focus ring to go from infinity to close focus. BUT... less precise. So go to AI... and before H series for the all metal rings 😊
That was pretty thorough. Imagine have to cycle through tripping the shutter 20 times to assure the electronics are reliable. Good to know.
This guy has taught me more about my film camera operations than anybody else. You're doing amazing stuff, sir!
Outstanding tutorial. This video answered a lot questions I had. Thank you for posting.
Glad it was useful!
Jonathan, I picked up exactly this model earlier this year, a Black paint, plain prism F and a couple of period lenses, a 50/1.4 and a 28/2. A wonderful, classic set-up. I do get some looks when I use it, people are amazed to see this classic in action in today's modern world!
Fantastic cameras - enjoy!
Great video, got my bronica out of the cupboard now I'm retired. Couldn't get the lens off. Thought it was damaged so found your video. Didn't have the shutter cocked. It's been a long time since I've put a film through it, so thanks. 11.00 am 9/12/2024, Australia
Glad you got it sorted!
Leica are niche products. Great glass, so-so bodies. Not worth the insultingly high price. More money has been made and more memories have been preserved with Japanese cameras, which incidentally just work better. Zeiss glass and Nikon bodies for the win.
Thanks Jonathan for taking the time to provide the excellent demo; clear and crisp!!
Excellent, clear and concise video. I've finally grasped the hitherto, unfathomable progression. Thank you for uploading.
Thanks - glad it was useful!
I hope nikon do a reissue of these like they did with the sp.
That would be fantastic! In black with the plain prism.
I have several M film cameras and others and your advice on how to examine a camera for shutter and other functions is excellent! I do this for my cameras as they get older or just sit unused for a time.
Appreciated - thanks
Many thanks Jonathan for a thorough walkthrough about the Nikon F - just bought one so perfect timing for me 😊
Hope it’s useful!
