Given the high quality of the camera when doing the detail close-ups, you may want to give the model a quick blast from an air gun first to remove the dust and bits of dirty from the factory. Sometimes they make the model's paint look defective.

Just a reminder that this engine is actually a hood-unit. Excellent locomotive by the way. I actually have a suggestion for an American locomotive that you could probably review. The Bachmann USRA light mikado could probably be a good engine for review. I have one of those on my railroad decorated in Southern railway lettering. The thing works like a charm but it doesn’t have bearings or figurines. Nonetheless a wonderful model for people who want a fairly “inexpensive” heavy freight locomotive. I purchased mine for 250 US dollars.

Great review here Sam, need to get a bachmann class 20 or a pair of them because they normally run in pairs, I have recently just picked up one of the bachmann midland pullmans which is one of their best train packs avaliable.
Ah, it's a new camera! That would explain it. During the Detail section I could quite easily seem some dust, blemishes and even light bleed on the masking lines (especially under the handrail). With the naked eye I can't imagine you'd see them, which was reflected in your commentary, but there was a level of sharpness and detail in the up-close video footage that I've not seen before. Always great to see another review. Keep it up!

At first I thought it was an Irish locomotive but it is still a great livery, and I think that Bachman have done it proud with what looks like a perfect job (apart from the apparent finger print - cotton bud to see if it wasn’t yours ) . Well Bachman has finally done it. Built a engine that not only great looking has a good mechanism and runs great but the best thing is it is not overly expensive. It is affordable. Great job Bachman keep it up.
Bought mine some months ago, in BR green. I also have the old model, also in BR green. First impression : the new model is really an improvement : looks better, run better, and silently than the old one I have a constant screech from the gearing while running with the old one. Dynamic performances : very good to excellent, the preceding was fair from good in this area, I have not chipped mine yet, but, with the good performances on DC, I can expect a good level of performance on DCC. I've paid mine GBP128 plus shipping and french VAT on arrival (add 20%) and, honestly, it's a fair price for what I've got. Bachmann does not swindle you with this one, it's a must-have. No shoddy finish, no asthmatic motor, no 1960s drivetrain, an up to date DCC socket, lights on (mine have some too !), no HST-like gearing, this one is what a model should be. In short for me : you want the new model ? Buy it ! It's excellent. Second hand ? The former class 20 is also a good one around the GBP 70 mark. At this price, it's also a must-have, buy it. The odd one is the Irish engine at the 25:54 mark.

Great video as usual Sam and I think the Camera performed very well for the first time. Great Loco and it takes me back to the early 60's and the first time seeing a class 20. It was an original Hornby Dublo 2 rail, diecast version running on a layout in one of our major department Stores in Brisbane Australia. This model is awesome, and Bachman have truly done a tremendous job with this model. Why is it that they seem to have their diesels right but are still missing something on their steam locos? Anyway, I believe Heljan has released a new Class 45. Will you be doing a review as I believe it is quite improved from others they have previously released. Keep up the great work.

That looks so great, from the distance I thought are there opening cab doors on the model? I don't think you can get any better than this locomotive, Bachmann have to be congratulated on this model as it is great when they get it right! Now that you have four class 20s you can now run two Jolly Fisherman Expresses from Nottingham to Skeggie! I couldn't believe it back in the Seventies when two of these were double heading a blue grey plus almost faded pink maroon rake of coaches into the Skeggie terminus! This service was replicated out of London Kings Cross to Skeggie with a pair of class 20s on a charter special just recently.

I thought that too, but then I spotted the Irish loco and this threw me somewhat, because then you could say that it was the only loco on his layout at the time that was not run by British Rail.
This new Bachmann Class 20 is a fantastic looking model. It has all the top qualities from a model. Bachmann really nailed the paint job so damn well Sam. I could see the light reflecting off the body.

Wow, marvellous loco Sam. The livery indeed is an acquired taste perhaps but this astonishing level of detail and quality for the amount you have paid is a steal. We always go over the sharpness of the moulding of the body and parts themselves as well as it does reveal the length and depth of the tooling capability of a manufacturer in case of serious models; absolutely excellently executed here, sharp and crisp. The fingerprint would be quite the niggle for us had the loco been at full RRP, but it could be forgiven for the price you’ve paid since she is an utter bargain we think. Great and very fair review. Well a year on - received your top loco for 2023 - AS Class37 - gone back faulty /refund - seems that AS make fine models - just as long as they remember these things are meant to run....not impressed after almost 2 years waiting. My Bachmann Class 20 - still superb....not sure if I'll bother with AS ever again.

I have a pair of the early Bachmann class 20s, despite being a basic model from 20 years ago, they run very well and would pull the side off a house. In a world of increasingly detailed, and costly models with quality control issues, is there a lesson for manufacturers here?!

The livery isn't bad. It doesn't have weird gradients or big flashy private company logos blown up all over the sides or dunno, lightning bolts or something.
I actually rather like this livery. I like the sort of red-orange against the black, and it feels very Thomas-like. The character Norman in the CGI series has a similar livery.
A great model indeed. detail is superb. The first time I have seen the wheel turning marks included on the wheels rims. A great deal of attention from the Bachmann design team. Camera seem very sharp Sam!
It is a bit unfair to this loco but the Harry Needle locos are used almost exclusively for delivering stock. So you would need the loco, an emu or dmu and then a barrier coach. That all becomes a bit of a faff and expense. I run modern trains and this has never been on my list for these reasons.

Very nice! Harry Needle orange livery reminds me of the old Strathclyde Transport scheme during the 1980s and 90s. Is the Hymek the "odd one out" for being a diesel-hydraulic rather than a diesel-electric? Depends on whether the one next to it is a 21/29 or a 22...

Bachmann also made a run of these in the traditional London Transport pin stripe maroon livery which looks fab. A lot more than £120 to buy though.

This is the second time in a row a single-cabbed diesel gets christened the best loco of the year (I’m talking about the CIÉ 121).
Colour looked good with the green coaches... Would look ok with some silver tanks or china clays as well 👍

I'm guessing the odd one out is the one on the siding in the background at 23:59, given that one's an EMD product built for Ireland.
Very nice! Harry Needle orange livery reminds me of the old Strathclyde Transport scheme during the 1980s and 90s. Is the Hymek the "odd one out" for being a diesel-hydraulic rather than a diesel-electric? Depends on whether the one next to it is a 21/29 or a 22...

Also, the odd one out is the Class 37 on the turntable @25.48. It's a co-co wheel arrangement while the others are bo-bo

He typically doesn't review American engines, but who knows. He might. I know I would love to see 611 pulling some british freight, or maybe even big boy pulling some pullmans

hi sam. a nice and colourful model. well priced. nothing to complain about on this model... except one small detail... NO CREW!!!!. looks like accurascale had upped the level of quality and detailing in the market so much so other brands seem to follow suit...
Snow ploughs in detail pack are apt. It looks like a council gritter in that livery.

I believe this was British day running rules. Right on, left off at night.
A nice model. A shame bachmann didn't bother working out a way to get the white marker lights to work, which other people have done.
