1095 carbon steel is classic, and very serviceable. Its main drawback is that it rusts pretty easily. I wouldn’t use it for a dive knife, or something on a saltwater pier. But if you’re willing to take a few precautions, like drying it when it gets wet, and applying a thin coat of oil periodically, a 1095 steel knife will last much longer than you will. I know, because I have some that belonged to my grandparents.
I thought it was fantastic when ESEE came out with this take on the Nessmuk. Great looking knife, and it would be very practical for the sorts of things I do outdoors. The only reason I don't have one yet is there were too many knives on my list in front of it. lol I still plan to get one someday. Thanks for showing it off, my friend!
Every once in a while UA-cam informs me of one of your videos days after you post it. This is one such example. Great video and a great interpretation of a classic pattern. The only Nessmuk pattern I have at the moment is the Ontario Fish and Game knife that is made from an Old Hickory butcher knife. Looking forward to seeing your Sunday sermon, and wishing you a good night.
Tons of useful hands-on info. I hadn't even considered the black oxide issues regarding food prep, thanks Tobias! L.T. Wright knives have a 90° spine as well. I used a Spyderco or Lansky ceramic rod to knock down the thumb shredding corners on mine. It works slowly and I am able to break the corner just enough to be comfortable without being visible.
Very nice piece, great score Tobias, all the features that one needs for the harder work, front choil, sharp spine, customizable handle for better ergonomics great camp knife. I hope you'll talk about how you like it in a few months.
You promised a review and you delivered a review Thanks now I want one Or do I still want a Grohmann lol I don’t consider it a rant at all bc many of your viewers are probably newbies and just into Chinese folders and know little about bushcraft or 1095 steel You spell things out without getting into the weeds of technicality Thanks again
To scrape a ferro rod, you only need an area of knife spine a little wider that the rod. It doesn’t matter what shape the rest of the spine has. For that matter, you can get sparks with the sharp edge of a knife, although you have to be more careful not to break the rod.
I think the idea of the 90 degree spine is to create an almost idiot proof spark maker. Many of the things ESEE does is done with an eye roll and a giggle as a response to repeated suggestion from fans who think they know more than the experts.
My favorite belt knife and I have plenty. Beware of cheap knockoffs! Eseeknife is not Esee knives! Notice the spelling. They use the same Esee label but it's from China and about 75 bucks. 90 degree spines also serve as a good way to make scrapings for tinder. I put a little Olive oil on the blade and process deer as well as slicing fruits and veggies.
Thanks for the video!…. As a proud owner of a few Esee knives (Izula II, 3, CR 2.5, Darien, Libertariat…and PR4) it is very difficult to decide which is better!. I use and really like them all. I agree with you that a small knife will work for many situations, I tend to go with small knives. It seems that we all are looking for the perfect knife, or a one knife quiver. I remember when I bought the PR4 I already have the Izula II and the 3, but wanted a knife with no coating, and was between the PR4 and JG5, I can’t remember why I choose the PR4 over the JG5, both are great knives. Maybe the JG5 could be better for food prep. A great combo could be the JG5 and the CR 2.5, or Izula II. Man I have used the Izula and the CR2.5 a lot and they both are excellent knives, strong as hell. I don’t hunt so I don’t skin animals, so the PR 4 is more for making fires and all around camp chores. I think I have too many knives and too little time to use them all, that is the only reason I am not buying the JG 5, But if I had the money I would add it to my “collection” for sure!. Great video!
I was looking at the PR4 for a very long time. I think the only reason I passed on it was because I have several other knives that fill that niche. I went for the JG5 because I didn't have a decent Nessmuk style knife and always wanted one. That was the collector in me. I've only used it a time or two and have enjoyed using it. But for my everyday use, the smaller knives such as the Candiru and Izula just make more sense. Still, I happy to have the JG5 and when I get the chance use it, it brings a smile to the face. I think that's what it is all about.
@@KnifeChatswithTobias You are right! It is a pleasure using our knives! I carry my Izula II on my backpack when mountain biking , my 3 on my car always, and the CR 2.5 on my daily bag, the PR 4 goes on every trip I do… I don’t have a Nessmuk, some day I will, but I am that kind of person that needs to use everything I have, I can not have a knife in a drawer and not use it. I have a CRKT for food prep, a CRKT Biwa for fish and paring knife, a Cudeman Sanabria 2, and a Joker Erizo. I takes an effort to decide which one to take with me. Off course I own a few Victorinox, actually 6!, love them all, but I am not buying another one. The only knife I keep without use is my Buck 110!!! I may buy another just to use it and keep the other one as a collectible item. Hope my wife does not read this aajajajajaja she hasn’t notice that I have so many knives and how do I explain that I “need” all of them!
I just took a look online at the MR599! That's a sweet looking knife and great price. The sheath does it a disservice. I might need to check it out. I'm adding it to my wishlist. Thanks Suchicken
@@KnifeChatswithTobias I was thinking about dyeing the Marbles micarta. I think you could get a watercolor effect if you tried. And were patient. And prepared to go black if it failed. Lol.
Why buy a Nessmuk when you already have alternatives? Well first because it is a great looking knife. 1095 is an awesome steel all around, yes it will rust if you don't maintain the steel, so oil it and it'll be fine. I wouldn't be to worried about foodsafe on the finish, i don't think it would do much harm. Did i already mentioned it looks great? Oh well i really like the nessmuk shape. Skinning, slicing, cutting wood, chop food, make a fire. The corners on the handle are a bit sharp, so yes i see why you want to reshape that. All around a pretty nice knife, thank you for showing Tobias.
Normally when I wait a while to buy a knife, I end up somewhat disappointed. There was something about the knife that was sending me negative vibes. This is one of the few exceptions. I'm not at all disappointed with this one. My only regret is if I had bought it last spring, I could've been using it last summer!
I think it was around $85-$95. I haven't used it much, so far but it is slowly getting out and about. The more I get it out of the sheath, the more I like it.
We don't have bears around me. Well with the exception of an NFL team, but they have proven to be quite harmless. But there are coyotes, foxes, and raccoons that are almost as big as bears. This one is going to get some use.

Well, too late. They've been discontinued.
Good choice you will get a lot of use out of it. I could see it being especially useful in food prep at the camp site. Thanks Tobias

UA-cam seems to intentionally screw up notifications! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Great review, I too have been eyeing this knife. I like it because it is made of 1095 carbon so much easier to sharpen.
It really feels good in he hand and it comes with a terrific edge. I really like it. Thanks for dropping by!

I really like the the looks of this one I have the ESEE PR4 and it's a great user !
It’s hard to go wrong with an ESEE.
Gibson has some great designs. I really like his carving axe.

Thanks for the review, ESEE quality is very good and will last a lifetime.
Great episode, enjoyed it very much.
Love my jg5. It’s on my belt right now. !!
That's a most excellent place for it to be.
Those are great looking knives! And one of the best warranty!
A great knife shape for a camp kitchen . Chopping up onions and meat etc for the chili or stew pot.
Bad ass
My camp bag is overflowing with knives. It's ridiculous, but I love it.
I know what you mean. The idea of one knife to do everything is a foreign concept for so many reasons.

I have the ESEE 6 it’s a perfectly balanced knife

Very good point about the knock offs. When it comes to ESEE and Spyderco, I always buy from a trusted retailer.
I love my JG5!
I know what you mean1 What's not to love?
why can't u carry it on your belt /hip ? Sheath issues ? great video..... thanx
I like the design work on that sheath.
I really like the sheath. It was nice to feel quality leather for a change. Thank you for dropping by and commenting.
Hope to see how you like using it.🙂

The Esee is a beauty, for sure. Have you considered a Marbles MR599? I’ve been looking at that one. Nylon sheath, though.
The Marbles looks like a decent piece on Sale now for 19.00 and change!!!!! Chicago kw.

Nice looking knife Tobias
Hello. I really like the nesmuk style blade. Very nice.
It really does seem to make sense, especially for skinning. But also just all around camp use.
Looks good. Some models diwn to ~$85
I'm pretty sure his name is James Gibson
I'm pretty sure you are correct. I'm guessing I said the wrong name.
